Factors affecting hair cortisol concentration in privately owned intact cats.

Understanding the factors affecting long-term stress in domestic cats is essential for welfare assessment, and hair cortisol concentration has been proposed as a promising biomarker for this purpose. This study investigated hair cortisol concentrations in intact, privately owned cats (Felis silvestris catus), with emphasis on physical and behavioral factors, as well as housing conditions. Hair samples were collected from 103 cats (40 males, 63 females) during routine preparation of the surgical field under general anesthesia prior to neutering. In females, samples were collected from the abdom

Basal body temperature as a biomarker of reproductive state in ewes: A multi-method comparison.

This study quantified body temperature dynamics throughout reproductive stages in crossbred ewes based on complementary monitoring techniques. Five ewes from a semi-extensive farming system were included in two sub-trials: animals were first assessed in the prepubertal stage and, subsequently, an oestrous cycle was induced by intravaginal progesterone sponges followed by eCG and prostaglandin; oestrous was confirmed by serum progesterone. Temperatures were recorded in five stages (prepubertal, pubertal, sponge, post-sponge, oestrous) based on eight measurements: rectal (RT), subcutaneous biolo

Skin microbiome characterization in acne vulgaris across urban and rural Egyptian populations.

BACKGROUND: Cutibacterium acnes is recognized as a key contributor to acne, but recent evidence suggests that shifts in skin microbial diversity, rather than simple overgrowth, are critical in disease progression. Despite the unique genetic and environmental characteristics of the Middle East and North Africa, microbiome data on acne remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the skin microbiome associated with acne vulgaris in Egyptian urban and rural populations and assess the influence of acne severity and lifestyle factors on microbial diversity. METHODS: We recruited 45 acne patients (ur

Chronic toxicity of pandemic-driven chloroquine diphosphate use in aquatic ecosystems: zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model species.

Chloroquine diphosphate (CQD) is used for treating systemic and endemic diseases, with increased consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its widespread use has led to increased detection in aquatic environments, where previous studies have reported oxidative stress and physiological disturbances in aquatic organisms. This study evaluated the chronic effects of CQD on zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed for 21 days to environmentally relevant concentrations (0.6, 1.8, 5.4, 16.2, and 48.6 µg/L). Biomarkers related to metabolism (proteins, glucose, triglycerides), mucosal immunity (immunoglobulins)

Heritability of Recurrent Aphthous Ulcers: Evidence from a UK Twin Cohort.

Genetic factors may contribute to the heritability and susceptibility of recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU). This study evaluated the heritability of RAU in the TwinsUK registry. Data from 890 twin pairs (319 monozygotic [MZ] and 571 dizygotic [DZ]) were used to estimate the prevalence of RAU in the previous year and 8 subphenotypes. A classical twin design was used to partition the variance in RAU presentation into components attributable to additive genetic (A), common/shared environmental (C), dominance genetic (D), and unique/nonshared environmental (E) effects. A multilevel ACE/ADE model wit

Parasitic Fauna of Free-Living Chelonoidis denticulatus From the Rio Acre Ecological Station and the Municipality of Cruzeiro do Sul, Western Amazon, Brazil.

Tortoises, such as Chelonoidis denticulatus, are described as hosts of many parasites, such as helminths and ticks of the genus Amblyomma, which are important vectors of rickettsial infection in Brazil. Additionally, the high consumption of meat from these animals in Acre results in a high risk of zoonotic outbreaks due to contact with the hosts and, consequently, associated pathogens. This study aimed to describe the parasitic fauna of C. denticulatus. Two sampling efforts were conducted: the capture of a sample population of tortoises at the Rio Acre Ecological Station (active search) and th

Impact of group size and habitat disturbance on parasitic infection in free-ranging proboscis monkeys.

Group-living primates experience the benefits and costs associated with sociality, including an elevated risk of parasite transmission. However, the relative influence of group type (i.e., social structure), group size, and habitat disturbance on parasitic infection remains unclear, particularly in Southeast Asian primates. In this study, the abundance of intestinal parasites in proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) inhabiting a riverine forest along the Menanggul River, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, was investigated. Fecal samples (n = 160) were collected from one-male-multifemale and all-male grou

Beyond the Standard Antibiogram: Unveiling the Roles of pH and Salinity in Modulating Gentamicin Efficacy Against Escherichia coli in Urinary Tract Infections.

Urinary tract infections are highly prevalent diseases with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. This study investigates the influence of two key abiotic factors, pH and salinity, on the growth and antibiotic susceptibility of Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and a clinical E. coli isolate obtained from a human urine sample. Growth kinetics and gentamicin susceptibility were evaluated across a pH range (4.5-11.0) and NaCl concentrations (0-1000 mM) using Luria-Bertani and Mueller-Hinton (MH) media. In parallel, real urine was analyzed, and urine-mimicking

In Situ Fabrication of Bacterial Cellulose-Polyhydroxyalkanoate Composite Membranes from Coconut Water: Mechanical Performance and Life Cycle Assessment.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a highly pure biomaterial that can be produced from agro-industrial residues, making it a sustainable candidate for tissue engineering applications such as biocompatible hydrogel. However, pure BC is rigid and brittle, which limits its clinical handling. This study aimed to synthesise BC membranes from the non-photosynthetic bacterium Komagataeibacter nataicola (TISTR 975) using mature coconut water as the primary fermentation medium, and to improve its mechanical properties by forming an in situ composite hydrogel with polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). Sucrose concentrat

Urbanization impacts the environmental microbial community and its antibiotic phenotypic resistance potential by reshaping the diversity and network complexity.

Urbanization imposes severe anthropogenic pressures on ecosystems, yet its impacts on the structural cohesion of environmental microbiomes and the co-occurrence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remain poorly understood. Here, we combined metabarcoding (16S/ITS2) with in vitro AMR screening of cultivable isolates across aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (France). Random Forest models (RFM), co-occurrence and bipartite networks were used to quantify ecological drivers and evaluate network resilience via percolation simulations. While urbanization categorical diversity ind

Implications of a combined perinatal exposure to BPA and BP-3 for offspring folliculogenesis and ovarian function in mice.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), like bisphenol A (BPA) and benzophenone-3 (BP-3), can interfere with hormone systems, posing risks to fertility and reproduction. Exposure to EDCs is unavoidable making it a relevant environmental health topic, however the impact of real-life EDC mixtures is largely unknown. This study explored the effects of a combined BPA and BP-3 exposure at tolerable intake levels for humans during pregnancy and early life on ovarian development and function in an established mouse model. Mice were daily exposed to concentrations of 4 µg/kg BPA orally, 50 mg/kg BP-3 d

Bisphenol P induces ovarian dysfunction by directly targeting PTGS2 and disrupting steroid hormone synthesis.

Emerging evidence suggests structural analogues of bisphenol A (BPA), including the increasingly used substitute bisphenol P (BPP), pose substantial reproductive risks. However, BPP's ovarian toxicity remains uncharacterized. This study used an integrated approach combining in vivo models, network toxicology, transcriptomics, molecular docking, and biophysical techniques to elucidate the mechanisms of BPP-induced ovarian injury in peripubertal female mice. Eight-week BPP exposure caused significant ovarian injury, including follicular atresia, disorganized granulosa cells, elevated DNA damage,

Unravelling the hsp70 gene in snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii): insights into stress response mechanisms.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones that play a crucial role in fish physiology from stress-induced damage by stabilizing proteins and enhancing survival under environmental challenges. This study characterizes the stress-responsive hsp70 (tb-ihsp70) gene in Trachinotus blochii, a prime marine aquaculture species, from an evolutionary perspective and links its expression to salinity and pathogen stress. The tb-ihsp70 encodes a 639 amino acid protein with conserved ATPase and substrate-binding domains critical for protein conformation under stress. Phylogenetic analysis grouped

Effects of Chlortetracycline on Lignin Biosynthesis in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Feedstock plants for biofuel production can be cultivated on polluted sites that are unsuitable for edible crop production. This approach combines environmental restoration and renewable energy production, therefore enhancing the economic viability of plant-derived biofuels. Previous studies have indicated that exposure to environmental pollutants may elevate lignin levels in exposed plants, potentially impacting the biomass digestibility and the efficiency of bioethanol conversion. In this study, we investigated the impact of the antimicrobial agent chlortetracycline on lignin biosynthesis in
