Dietary treatment of congenital chylothorax with skimmed breast milk.

BACKGROUND: Congenital chylothorax (CC) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition in newborns. It is defined as an accumulation of chyle in the pleural cavity. The few publications regarding medical management and therapeutic dietary intervention motivated us to share our experience. METHODS: Neonates diagnosed with congenital chylothorax and treated at Innsbruck Medical University Hospital between 2013 and 2020 (n = 6, gestational age: 36 3/7, 32 5/7, 36 4/7, 35 0/7, 35 4/7, 37 3/7 weeks) were eligible for this report. The cornerstones of treatment for chylothorax conventionally c

Association between anorexia nervosa and other specified eating or feeding disorders and paranoia in adolescents: what factors are involved?

INTRODUCTION: In eating disorders, the association with other psychiatric symptoms is of particular interest. The association between anorexia nervosa and psychotic symptoms is less studied than that with affective disorders (anxiety/depression). The aim of this study is to describe a psychotic symptom (paranoia) in adolescents with anorexia nervosa looking at several potential explicative associated factors: eating disorder symptoms, body image concerns, depression and social anxiety. Our hypothesis is that paranoia in anorexia nervosa patients is better explained by the concomitant depressio

Wild ungulate species differ in their contribution to the transmission of Ixodes ricinus-borne pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Several ungulate species are feeding and propagation hosts for the tick Ixodes ricinus as well as hosts to a wide range of zoonotic pathogens. Here, we focus on Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi (s.l.), two important pathogens for which ungulates are amplifying and dilution hosts, respectively. Ungulate management is one of the main tools to mitigate human health risks associated with these tick-borne pathogens. Across Europe, different species of ungulates are expanding their ranges and increasing in numbers. It is currently unclear if and how the relative contrib

Protocol for the Emory University African American maternal stress and infant gut microbiome cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The microbial population of the human gut (the gut microbiome) is an integral cog in the bidirectional communication axis that exists between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. African American infants disproportionately experience multiple, overlapping vulnerabilities such as preterm birth and formula rather than breast feeding that may disrupt the development of the infant microbiome. African American infants also are more likely to have mothers affected by chronic stress both pre- and post-natally. Perhaps relatedly, African American offspring are disprop

A selective placement strategy for surgical feeding tubes benefits trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: The indications for surgical feeding tube (SFT) placement in trauma patients are poorly defined. Patient selection is critical as complications from SFTs have been reported in up to 70% of patients. A previous analysis by our group determined that 25% of the SFTs we placed were unnecessary and that older patients, patients with head and spinal cord injuries, and patients who needed a tracheostomy were more likely to require long-term SFTs. Following this study, we modified our institutional guidelines for SFT placement. We hypothesized that a more selective placement strategy would

MOnitored supplementation of VItamin D in preterm infants (MOSVID trial): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The pivotal role of vitamin D (vit D) in skeletal health is well known. Neonatal vit D storage at birth is dependent on maternal levels, and newborns receive 50-70% of their mother's 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]. Deficiency of vit D can lead to prematurity bone disease, with an incidence of up to 55% in infants weighing < 1000 g. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of monitored supplementation of vit D in a population of preterm infants. METHODS/DESIGN: Preterm infants born at 24-32 weeks of gestation will be recruited within the first 7 days of life. Depending o

Infantile gangliosidoses: Mapping a timeline of clinical changes.

BACKGROUND: Infantile gangliosidoses include GM1 gangliosidosis and GM2 gangliosidosis (Tay-Sachs disease, Sandhoff disease). To date, natural history studies in infantile GM2 (iGM2) have been retrospective and conducted through surveys. Compared to iGM2, there is even less natural history information available on infantile GM1 disease (iGM1). There are no approved treatments for infantile gangliosidoses. Substrate reduction therapy using miglustat has been tried, but is limited by gastrointestinal side effects. Development of effective treatments will require identification of meaningful outc

Evaluation and comparison of the potential of two ferritins as anti-tick vaccines against Haemaphysalis longicornis.

BACKGROUND: Tick control is an essential aspect of controlling the spread of tick-borne diseases affecting humans and animals, but it presently faces several challenges. Development of an anti-tick vaccine is aimed at designing cost-effective and environmentally friendly protection against ticks and tick-borne diseases as an alternative to the use of chemical acaricides. A single vaccine from the tick midgut protein Bm86 is currently available for field applications, but its efficacy is limited to only some tick species. Identification of candidate vaccine antigens that can affect multiple tic

Evaluation of the long-lasting insecticidal net Interceptor LN: laboratory and experimental hut studies against anopheline and culicine mosquitoes in northeastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Long lasting insecticidal nets (LN) are a primary method of malaria prevention. Before new types of LN are approved they need to meet quality and efficacy standards set by the WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme. The process of evaluation has three phases. In Phase I the candidate LN must meet threshold bioassay criteria after 20 standardized washes. In Phase II washed and unwashed LNs are evaluated in experimental huts against wild, free flying anopheline mosquitoes. In Phase III the LN are distributed to households in malaria endemic areas, sampled over three years of use and tested
