Common data elements for maternal health research: Expert consensus emerging from a modified Delphi study.

INTRODUCTION: Common data elements (CDEs) are critical for providing consistency in data collection and promoting collaboration across research endeavors. This study aims to develop a minimum set of priority CDEs for maternal health research. METHODS: The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development convened a panel of experts, including representatives from research centers, professional associations, and government agencies, to advise on CDEs for maternal health research. A landscape analysis identified constructs, such as health conditions, health behavio

Modeling stigma, help-seeking attitudes, and intentions to seek behavioral healthcare in a clinical military sample.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between public and self-stigma of seeking behavioral health services, and help-seeking attitudes and intent in a sample of active duty military personnel currently being assessed for traumatic brain injuries in a military health center. Although it has been suggested that many military personnel in need of care do not seek services due to concerns with stigma it is not fully clear what role different types of stigma play in the process. METHOD: Using previously collected data from a clinical sample of 97 military personnel, we conducted path ana

Exploring pregnant women's perspectives on pre-pregnancy physical activity in Nebraska: A qualitative study.

Physical activity (PA) is important for a woman's health particularly before pregnancy, yet many remain inactive during this time despite its benefits for themselves and their child. This qualitative descriptive study explored pregnant women's experiences with pre-pregnancy PA and the factors influencing their engagement. Using convenience sampling, data were collected from women across Nebraska between December 2023 and February 2024 via Zoom interviews. Thematic analysis, guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), identified three key themes: (1) Behavioral attitudes - women recognized

The Role of Traditional and Religious Beliefs in HIV Testing and Prevention in Africa: A Scoping Review Protocol.

Human immunodeficiency virus remains a persistent public health challenge in Africa, with cultural and religious beliefs influencing testing and prevention behaviors. Understanding these influences is important for developing culturally appropriate interventions. This scoping review protocol outlines a plan to systematically map the existing literature on the impact of traditional and religious beliefs, and the roles of traditional and religious leaders, on HIV testing and prevention behaviors across African contexts. Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework, the review will progress through

Bedtime procrastination mediates the relation between anxiety and sleep problems.

The prevalence of sleep problems is high in primary care patients and in anxious individuals. This study assessed whether total sleep time and bedtime procrastination mediated the association between anxiety and sleep problems. We predicted higher anxiety would be negatively associated with total sleep time and positively associated with bedtime procrastination and sleep problems, and these variables would statistically mediate the association between anxiety and sleep problems. Participants were 308 adult primary care patients, predominantly female (non-Hispanic White = 158, Latinx = 111, mea

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy in the Digital Age: Presidential Address.

Our field has come a long way in establishing cognitive-behavioral therapy as the empirically supported treatment of choice for a wide range of mental and behavioral health problems. Nevertheless, most individuals with mental disorders do not receive any care at all, and those who do often have difficulty accessing care that is consistently high in quality. Addressing these issues is complex and costly and thus progress has been slow. We are entering an exciting stage in which emerging technologies might offer novel solutions to the treatment gap. This paper discusses a number of technology-en

Ontogeny of chick behavior: a tool for monitoring the growth and development of lesser adjutant storks.

We studied the behavioral development of seven lesser adjutant stork (Leptoptilos javanicus) chicks from hatching to fledging over three breeding seasons at the Bronx Zoo. We developed an ethogram and compared the rate at which behaviors appeared in relation to brood size, sex, and the conditions in which the chicks were raised by their parents. Although sample sizes were small, there seem to be sex-related differences in the rate at which behaviors develop, with females developing more rapidly than males. Larger clutch size may be associated with slower growth rate because the single male dev

Physician advice and individual behaviors about cardiovascular disease risk reduction--seven states and Puerto Rico, 1997.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) (e.g., heart disease and stroke) is the leading cause of death in the United States and accounted for 959,227 deaths in 1996. Strategies to reduce the risk for heart disease and stroke include lifestyle changes (e.g., eating fewer high-fat and high-cholesterol foods) and increasing physical activity. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommend that, as part of a preventive health examination, all primary-care providers counsel their patients about a healthy diet and regular physical activity. AHA also recommends low-do

Neutrophils under the microscope: neutrophil dynamics in infection, inflammation, and cancer revealed using intravital imaging.

Neutrophils rapidly respond to inflammation resulting from infection, injury, and cancer. Intravital microscopy (IVM) has significantly advanced our understanding of neutrophil behavior, enabling real-time visualization of their migration, interactions with pathogens, and coordination of immune responses. This review delves into the insights provided by IVM studies on neutrophil dynamics in various inflammatory contexts. We also examine the dual role of neutrophils in tumor microenvironments, where they can either facilitate or hinder cancer progression. Finally, we highlight how computational

[Diagnosis and treatment of hair pulling- and skin picking disorder].

Hair pulling disorder (HPD; trichotillomania) is characterized by recurrent pulling of hair from the scalp, eyebrows or other parts of the body. Skin picking disorder (SPD) is closely related to HPD and involves re-current picking of the skin. Even though both HPD and SPD are relatively common and potentially severe disorders, health professionals typically know little about them. In the present article, we describe the clinical characteristics of these problems and provide diagnostic guidelines. We also discuss main treatment approaches (drug treatments and behavior therapy) and review resear

Pathological gambling and suicidality: an analysis of severity and lethality.

Pathological gambling represents a major public health issue. Risk factors for suicide such as major depression, substance abuse, marital breakdown, unemployment, financial crises, and legal difficulties are commonly found in populations of pathological gamblers. The objective of this study was to systematically investigate the nature of suicidal behavior among treatment-seeking pathological gamblers and its relationship to gambling characteristics and depression. Indices of suicidality were assessed in a sample of 85 treatment-seeking diagnosed pathological gamblers. High rates of suicidal id

Managing somatic preoccupation.

Somatically preoccupied patients are a heterogeneous group of persons who have no genuine physical disorder but manifest psychologic conflicts in a somatic fashion; who have a notable psychologic overlay that accompanies or complicates a genuine physical disorder; or who have psychophysiologic symptoms in which psychologic factors play a major role in physiologic symptoms. In the primary care setting, somatic preoccupation is far more prevalent among patients than are the psychiatric disorders collectively referred to as somatoform disorders (e.g., somatization disorder, hypochondriasis). Repeater F waves: a comparison of sensitivity with sensory antidromic wrist-to-palm latency and distal motor latency in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Thirty-five thousand six hundred supramaximal shocks were applied to 209 healthy and 147 entrapped median nerves (carpal tunnel syndrome--CTS) to characterize the backfiring behavior of the alpha motor neuron pool of abductor pollicis brevis in health and the modifying effect of a compressive neuropathy. A contraction of the normal subpopulation of active F-wave generators was found in CTS, while active neurons backfired at higher than normal frequencies (p less than 0.001). These modifications in spinal behavior are reflected in the % Repeater F-wave value, whose sensitivity in the detection

Brief cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain rapidly improves pain interference: a randomized controlled trial.

Abbreviated psychotherapies for chronic pain improve access to care by reducing length of treatment and reaching patients outside of chronic pain clinics, such as primary care. However, the evidence for these approaches is limited. We conducted a randomized controlled trial of brief cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain (ie, 6, 30-minute sessions of psychoeducation, behavioral and cognitive skills, and relapse prevention delivered individually) with 184 primary care patients with moderate to severe chronic musculoskeletal pain from a Veterans Health Administration medical center. Mean

Association between interpersonal resources and mental health professional help-seeking among Chinese adolescents with probable depression: mediations via personal resources and active coping.

BACKGROUND: Globally, adolescent depression is prevalent. There is, however, a dearth of studies investigating behavioral intention to professional help-seeking regarding mental health problems among adolescents having probable depression. Based on the Stress Coping Theory, the hypothesis that personal resources and active coping would mediate between interpersonal resources and behavioral intention to professional help-seeking was investigated. METHODS: Students from five junior middle schools, three senior high schools, and one vocational school were selected to participate in the survey fr

Using the Theory of Planned Behavior to Explain and Predict Areca Nut Use Among Adolescents in India: An Exploratory Study.

CONTEXT: Areca nut, used alone or in combination with tobacco, contributes to the high oral cancer burden in India. Used widely by adolescents, who perceive it as a harmless substance, areca nut is addictive and considered a precursor to tobacco use. Given its serious implications for addictiveness and physical health, urgent preventive interventions for areca nut use are required in India and South-East Asia. Studies examining the role of health behavior theory in explaining and predicting areca nut use and for development of its prevention among adolescents are scarce. AIM: This study explo
