Protection of Mice against Experimental Cryptococcosis by Synthesized Peptides Delivered in Glucan Particles.

The high global burden of cryptococcosis has made development of a protective vaccine a public health priority. We previously demonstrated that a vaccine composed of recombinant Cryptococcus neoformans chitin deacetylase 2 (Cda2) delivered in glucan particles (GPs) protects BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice from an otherwise lethal challenge with a highly virulent C. neoformans strain. An immunoinformatic analysis of Cda2 revealed a peptide sequence predicted to have strong binding to the major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC II) H2-IAd allele found in BALB/c mice. BALB/c mice vaccinated with G

Molecular characterization of ESBL- and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolated from cats in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a pressing global health challenge, influencing human, animal, and environmental health within the interconnected One Health framework. ESBL- and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae constitute a major global public health threat. In Lebanon, their presence is particularly concerning, as they are detected across diverse environments, including hospitals, surface water, wastewater, poultry, and livestock. Despite close contact between pets and their owners, the role of companion animals, particularly cats, in spreading AMR determinants

From molecular evolution to the school health room: the role of community-based public health nurses (helsesykepleiere) in one health communication on cross-species influenza transmission in Norway.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b viruses have undergone an unprecedented expansion of host range since 2021, moving from wild birds and poultry into dairy cattle, domestic cats, and other mammals, with sporadic human infections in Europe and North America (Food and Agriculture Organization et al., 2025a; Rolfes et al., 2025). This expansion is underpinned by well-characterised molecular mechanisms of influenza A virus evolution - antigenic drift, gene segment reassortment, and receptor-binding adaptation - that shape the frequency and direction of cross-species s

Time for an Update: The Currency of Clinical Guidelines in Australia-A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Long-term and chronic health conditions are associated with a significant burden of disease and economic impact in Australia. Although improving health outcomes requires a multifactorial approach, up-to-date clinical guidelines can optimise healthcare delivery by providing clinicians with evidence-based, actionable recommendations. We aimed to determine the currency and key methodological characteristics of national clinical guidelines published in Australia and focussed on areas of highest prevalence and burden of disease. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We conducted a cross-sectional

Is neglect different? Social determinants of child protection plans by recorded maltreatment type in England: a longitudinal ecological study, 2014/2015-2022/2023.

OBJECTIVES: Neglect is the leading cause of acute child protection interventions across high-income countries. In England, reducing the number of children subject to these interventions is a policy priority. However, limited evidence on the health and social factors driving recent trends in neglect constrains effective prevention. We aimed to assess the associations of area-level adult mental health, child poverty and employment, with recorded neglect, and to compare these associations with those observed for other forms of maltreatment. DESIGN: Longitudinal ecological study using panel data.

Challenges and solutions to effective stewardship of rehabilitation services: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Strong and effective stewardship is a fundamental function of health systems. However, rehabilitation services often receive insufficient attention due to the limited priority assigned to them by governments and health systems. In many countries-particularly low- and middle-income nations-this neglect has resulted in fragmented and poorly coordinated rehabilitation services across various sectors, with inconsistent service delivery influenced by the internal policies of individual institutions. This study investigates the broader barriers to rehabilitation services, analyze

Tackling physical inactivity and inequalities: implementing a whole systems approach to transform community provision for disabled people and people with long-term health conditions.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a global public health priority. There are known health and well-being consequences of being inactive, and the benefits of being physically active are well established. However, there are persistent inequalities when it comes to how physically active people are, with disabled people, people living with long-term health conditions, and people residing in areas of socio-economic deprivation being particularly affected. Methods such as whole system approaches (WSAs), which are dynamic, multifaceted, and engage all relevant stakeholders, have gained momentum as a

Incorporating a mobile application to support communication about HPV testing among women and professionals: barriers and facilitators from the perspective of health professionals in a middle- and low-income setting in Argentina.

INTRODUCTION: The delivery of positive Human papillomavirus (HPV) test results can have a psychosocial impact and act as a barrier for women to continue the cervical cancer (CC) prevention process. A previous formative research based on a woman's perspective indicated that a mobile app could be an acceptable and appropriate tool to help women obtain information and reduce fears related to a positive result. Based on these findings, we developed an app-based intervention that would function as a support for professionals who offer the HPV test and communicate their results. We report data on th

Training health workers and community influencers to be Vaccine Champions: a mixed-methods RE-AIM evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing trust and confidence in vaccines is a global priority, as countries have grappled with delivering COVID-19 vaccines, maintaining routine childhood vaccination rates and introducing new vaccines. Community-based vaccine promotion interventions are commonly implemented, but effectiveness evidence is limited. In 2022, supported by the Australian Government and in partnership with Fiji's Ministry of Health and UNICEF, we codesigned, delivered and comprehensively evaluated a vaccine education and communication training programme for health workers and community influencers

Combination of toxicological and epidemiological approaches for estimating the health impact of atmospheric pollutants. A proof of concept for NO2.

BACKGROUND: Regular monitoring of the air pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO2), an indicator for traffic-related emissions, is a priority in urban environments. The health impacts associated with NO2 exposure are the result of a combination of factors, including concentration, duration of exposure, and interactions with other pollutants. WHO has established air quality guidelines based on epidemiological studies. OBJECTIVE: This study develops a new concept "Health Impact Pathways (HIPs)" using adversity as a probabilistic indicator of health effects. For this purpose, it integrates available tox

INTRODUCTION: Digital health services are a promising but understudied method for reducing common barriers to vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), including connection to facilities offering labor after cesarean and patient-centered counseling about mode of birth. This study assesses the relationship between use of digital prenatal services and VBAC. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed the use of digital prenatal services and mode of birth among users of an employer-sponsored digital women's and family digital health platform. All users had a prior cesarean birth. Users'

A rapid assessment of the implementation of integrated disease surveillance and response system in Northeast Nigeria, 2017.

BACKGROUND: Integrated disease surveillance and response (IDSR) is the strategy adopted for public health surveillance in Nigeria. IDSR has been operational in Nigeria since 2001 but the functionality varies from state to state. The outbreaks of cerebrospinal meningitis and cholera in 2017 indicated weakness in the functionality of the system. A rapid assessment of the IDSR was conducted in three northeastern states to identify and address gaps to strengthen the system. METHOD: The survey was conducted at the state and local government areas using standard IDSR assessment tools which were ada

Tailoring immunisation service delivery in a disadvantaged community in Australia; views of health providers and parents.

In 2014 the Australian immunisation target was raised from 90% to 95% of children to be fully immunised. A national priority is to identify geographic areas of low coverage and implement strategies to improve immunisation rates. Using The World Health Organization's Tailoring Immunization Programmes (TIP) Guidelines, the aim of this study was to identify areas of low immunisation coverage for children in the Hunter New England Local Health District, New South Wales, and to gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing immunisation in those areas in order to develop tailored strategies

The need to improve access to rabies post-exposure vaccines: Lessons from Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is preventable through prompt administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to exposed persons, but PEP access is limited in many rabies-endemic countries. We investigated how access to PEP can be improved to better prevent human rabies. METHODS: Using data from different settings in Tanzania, including contact tracing (2,367 probable rabies exposures identified) and large-scale mobile phone-based surveillance (24,999 patient records), we estimated the incidence of rabies exposures and bite-injuries, and examined health seeking and health outcomes in relation to PEP acc

Developing a Set of Core Outcomes for Trials in Hemodialysis: An International Delphi Survey.

BACKGROUND: Survival and quality of life for patients on hemodialysis therapy remain poor despite substantial research efforts. Existing trials often report surrogate outcomes that may not be relevant to patients and clinicians. The aim of this project was to generate a consensus-based prioritized list of core outcomes for trials in hemodialysis. STUDY DESIGN: In a Delphi survey, participants rated the importance of outcomes using a 9-point Likert scale in round 1 and then re-rated outcomes in rounds 2 and 3 after reviewing other respondents' scores. For each outcome, the median, mean, and pr
