"You are helping from the heart not just from the head": a systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis of the experiences of peer workers working with people experiencing homelessness and substance use.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, substance use and homelessness services have peer workers, those with lived or living experience of substance use and homelessness, who provide support to those experiencing similar challenges. While research regarding the effectiveness of such peer workers in helping others achieve better outcomes is growing, little is known about their experiences in this role. METHODS: A systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis was conducted to better understand the experiences of peer workers who have lived/living experience of substance use and homelessness who are p

Applying Nontargeted Analysis to Explore the Chemical Composition of Dust Collected in Infants' Homes.

Dust ingestion is an important pathway for exposure to environmental chemicals, especially for children. However, estimating infant-specific dust ingestion rates remains challenging. One proposed approach to improve estimates is the identification of novel organic tracers. To help address this challenge, we conducted a nontargeted analysis on dust samples collected from waking and sleeping rooms in infants' homes (n = 30) in the greater Baltimore, MD region, as part of the INnovations to Generate Estimates of children's Soil/dust inTake (INGEST) Study. By leveraging publicly available data fro

Broiler litter moisture and trace metals contribute to the persistence of Salmonella strains that harbor large plasmids carrying siderophores.

Broiler litter sampling has proven to be an effective method for determining the Salmonella status of a broiler chicken flock and understanding the ecology of Salmonella prior to harvest. In this study, we investigated the ecology of Salmonella within the litter (n = 224) from two commercial broiler houses in the United States. We employed culture enrichment methods and quantitative polymerase chain reaction to determine the prevalence and load of Salmonella and utilized antimicrobial susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to characterize select isolates. Additionally, we app

Where does Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) really breed in a Mediterranean residential area? Results from a field study in Valencia, Eastern Spain.

Since its introduction in Spain in 2004, Aedes albopictus has rapidly spread across the country. Its aggressive biting behaviour causes nuisance, limiting outdoor activities. Also, its role as a vector of several arboviruses implies a major public health risk, with several cases of autochthonous dengue having been reported nationwide over the past few years. Control strategies usually focus on interventions in breeding sites. As such, accurate knowledge of the main larval habitats becomes a major priority in infested areas. A detailed identification of breeding sites of Ae. albopictus was carr

Enhancing detection of SARS-CoV-2 re-infections using longitudinal sero-monitoring: demonstration of a methodology in a cohort of people experiencing homelessness in Toronto, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Accurate estimation of SARS-CoV-2 re-infection is crucial to understanding the connection between infection burden and adverse outcomes. However, relying solely on PCR testing results in underreporting. We present a novel approach that includes longitudinal serologic data, and compared it against testing alone among people experiencing homelessness. METHODS: We recruited 736 individuals experiencing homelessness in Toronto, Canada, between June and September 2021. Participants completed surveys and provided saliva and blood serology samples every three months over 12 months of fol

Digital health access, uptake, literacy and trust in people with experience of homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although digital health promises improved healthcare efficiency and equity, access and uptake might be low in disadvantaged populations. We measured access to digital health technology, the uptake of digital health, digital health literacy and COVID-19 vaccination intentions in an inner-city Australian population experiencing homelessness. METHOD: An existing Australian survey, including a validated digital health literacy measure (eHealth Literacy Scale [eHEALS]), was modified and distributed in three general practices specifically targeting the homeless population

An incomplete picture: A scoping review of how scholars account for race and ethnicity in family homelessness research.

Families of color in the United States experience homelessness at a disproportionately higher rate than White families; however, little is known about how scholars account for race and ethnicity in family homelessness research. This scoping review analyzes how researchers examine race and ethnicity in conceptual frameworks, methods, and analysis. Following PRISMA-ScR reporting standards, I searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and ERIC for quantitative studies including a housing outcome for homeless service-involved families. I used Covidence to screen for inclusion and extract data, and QuADS t

Resiliency in Persons Experiencing Homelessness: A Concept Analysis Using the Evolutionary Framework.

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness is a critical societal issue, with those affected facing disproportionate chronic and acute health conditions. At the core of understanding their experiences is the concept of resiliency. Understanding resiliency in homelessness is crucial because it highlights the dynamic interplay between inherent qualities and external challenges, underscoring the need to reassess societal value judgements and inform nursing practices in research, education and advocacy. AIM: This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive concept analysis to propose a revised definition of resiliency

Common practices for sociodemographic data reporting in digital mental health intervention research: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The ability of digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) to reduce mental health disparities relies on the recruitment of research participants with diverse sociodemographic and self-identity characteristics. Despite its importance, sociodemographic reporting in research is often limited, and the state of reporting practices in DMHI research in particular has not been comprehensively reviewed. OBJECTIVES: To characterise the state of sociodemographic data reported in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of app-based DMHIs published globally from 2007 to 2022. METHODS: A scoping

Exploring the long-term performance of air purifiers in removing particulate matter and formaldehyde across different residential environments.

Household air purifiers are widely used to enhance indoor air quality. However, limited information exists regarding the factors that influence their long-term performance. This study investigates the impact of various residential environments on the long-term efficacy of air purifiers. We deployed household air purifiers in three distinct environments: oily fumes (Group A), non-oily fumes (Group C), and a mixture of oily and non-oily fumes (Groups B-I and B-II). The selected air filter consisted of melt-blown polypropylene and activated carbon, materials commonly employed in commercial applic

Influence of view factors on outdoor thermal comfort of residential areas in hot-humid regions.

Sky View Factor (SVF) is commonly used to describe the impact of urban geometry on the urban thermal environment. Shading effects from plants and buildings also exert a considerable influence. To investigate the influence of view factors on outdoor thermal comfort in residential areas, we employed the Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) and view factors (SVF, TVF, BVF) as indicators to determine outdoor thermal comfort and the quantity of shaded spaces. Thermal measurements collected from 13 points in Guangzhou, China, Our findings revealed that high TVF points exhibited more stable air

Infectious Diseases Among People Experiencing Homelessness: A Systematic Review of the Literature in the United States and Canada, 2003-2022.

Homelessness increases the risk of acquiring an infectious disease. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify quantitative data related to infectious diseases and homelessness. We searched Google Scholar, PubMed, and SCOPUS for quantitative literature published from January 2003 through December 2022 in English from the United States and Canada. We excluded literature on vaccine-preventable diseases and HIV because these diseases were recently reviewed. Of the 250 articles that met inclusion criteria, more than half were on hepatitis C virus or Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

'Trials and Tribulations': The Ambivalent Influence of Temporary Accommodation on Mental Health Recovery in Chronically Homeless Adults.

Relatively few studies have explicitly examined whether and how shelter-type, temporary or emergency accommodation shapes homeless clients' personal (mental health) recovery. A transatlantic phenomenological qualitative study was conducted to examine the influence of those services on personal recovery. Eighteen chronically homeless adults with a history of serious mental illness were recruited from several temporary accommodation services in New York City (NYC), U.S., and Glasgow, Scotland. Participants completed repeat in-depth interviews and a novel one-week multimedia mobile phone diary. T

Financial Incentives for COVID-19 Vaccines Among People Experiencing Homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Novel strategies are needed to address barriers to COVID-19 vaccination among people experiencing homelessness (PEH), a population that faces increased COVID-19 risk. Although growing evidence suggests that financial incentives for vaccination are acceptable to PEH, their impact on uptake is unknown. This study aimed to assess whether offering $50 gift cards was associated with the uptake of the first doses of COVID-19 vaccine among PEH in Los Angeles County. METHODS: Vaccination clinics began on March 15, 2021; the financial incentive program was implemented from September 26,

Addressing the needs of Ethiopia's street homeless women of reproductive age in the health and social protection policy: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, homelessness is a growing concern, and homeless women of reproductive age are particularly vulnerable to adverse physical, mental, and reproductive health conditions, including violence. Although Ethiopia has many homeless individuals, the topic has received little attention in the policy arena. Therefore, we aimed to understand the reason for the lack of attention, with particular emphasis on women of reproductive age. METHODS: This is a qualitative study; 34 participants from governmental and non-governmental organisations responsible for addressing homeless individu
