Prenatal exposure to phthalates, maternal oxidative stress, and early childhood neurobehavior: a pathway modeling approach.

OBJECTIVE: Phthalates are recognized endocrine disruptors and emerging neurotoxicants. Prenatal exposure to di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) has been linked to adverse neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric outcomes, and maternal oxidative stress may play a mechanistic role in prenatal DEHP's neurotoxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were drawn from the New York University Children's Health and Environment Study. Prenatal DEHP exposure and maternal lipid peroxidation were assessed using repeated creatinine-adjusted maternal urinary measurements across pregnancy, collected from Janua

Associations of acetaminophen use during pregnancy and the first year of life with neurodevelopment in early childhood.

BACKGROUND: Over-the-counter analgesic use during pregnancy, particularly acetaminophen, may be associated with negative developmental outcomes in children. OBJECTIVE: Estimate associations of prenatal and early-life exposure to acetaminophen in early childhood with cognitive, motor, and language skills in two birth cohorts. METHODS: The American Project Viva cohort (1217 mother-child pairs enrolled 1999-2002) assessed cognition at approximately 3 years using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Wide Range Achievement of Visual Motor Abilities (WRAVMA). Serotonin Toxicity: Associated Agents and Clinical Characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Serotonin toxicity is a common cause of drug-induced altered mental status. However, data on the causes of serotonin toxicity, symptomatology, complications, and rate of antidotal treatment are limited. METHODS: This study evaluated cases of serotonin toxicity in the ToxIC registry, an international database of prospectively collected cases seen by medical toxicologists. Serotonin toxicity was diagnosed by bedside evaluation of medical toxicology specialists and explicit criteria were not used. The database was searched for "serotonin syndrome" between January 1, 2010, and Decembe

Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative: Summary of the evidence base for pregnancy-related interventions to prevent overweight and obesity in children.

This overview of systematic reviews (SRs) aimed to identify dietary and lifestyle interventions in pregnant women that reduce the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and/or risk factors thereof, in their children. Following identification of eligible SRs, a matrix of all included studies identified overlap between SRs. The most recent, comprehensive, high-quality SRs were selected for further dissagregation. We developed a Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE)-based effectiveness matrix incorporating effect size and study quality to prioritise interventions

Annual Research Review: Interparental conflict and youth psychopathology: an evidence review and practice focused update.

The quality of the interparental relationship is recognized as an important influence on child and adolescent psychopathology. Historically, clinically oriented research on this topic has focused on the impacts of parental divorce and domestic violence as primary interparental relationship influences on child outcomes, to the relative neglect of dimensional or qualitative features of the couple/interparental relationship for youth (child and adolescent) psychopathology. Recent research has highlighted that children are affected by attributes of interparental conflict, specifically how parents

A Deviance Approach to Understanding Use of Maternal Health Care Services in Bangladesh.

CONTEXT: Use of maternal health care can reduce maternal morbidity and mortality in countries like Bangladesh, where rates of these outcomes are high. Community characteristics are associated with use of maternal care services, but it is unclear whether deviation from community norms is associated with service use. METHODS: Data from the 2014 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey on 4,106 ever-married women aged 15-49 were used to examine relationships between women's deviation from their communities on socioeconomic, fertility and other characteristics and use of maternal health care (ant

Longitudinal pathways from early maternal depression to children's dysregulated representations: a moderated mediation analysis of harsh parenting and gender.

There is some evidence linking maternal depression, harsh parenting, and children's internal representations of attachment, yet, longitudinal examinations of these relationships and differences in the developmental pathways between boys and girls are lacking. Moderated mediation growth curves were employed to examine harsh parenting as a mechanism underlying the link between maternal depression and children's dysregulated representations using a nationally-representative, economically-vulnerable sample of mothers and their children (n = 575; 49% boys, 51% girls). Dysregulation representations

Improved Reproductive Health Equity Between the Poor and the Rich: An Analysis of Trends in 46 Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

While several indicators for reproductive health have improved for entire populations, few analyses are available for trends over time in the gaps between the poor and the rich. This paper tracks improvements in the equitable distribution of reproductive health indicators according to wealth quintiles, especially for contraceptive use, in 46 low- and middle-income countries based on national population-based surveys conducted between 1990 and 2013. It focuses on the gaps between the poorest and richest quintiles in the earliest and latest survey rounds across a number of reproductive health in

An interventional airway delivery service for congenital high airway obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Congenital airway obstruction is rare but potentially fatal. We developed a complex airways interventional delivery team to manage such cases. Antenatal imaging detects airway compromise at an early stage and facilitates the planning of delivery procedures ('ex utero intrapartum treatment' and 'operation on placental support') which maintain feto-placental circulation whilst an airway is secured. METHOD: A retrospective review was performed of cases in which ENT input was required at birth for airway obstruction. RESULTS: Four neonates were delivered before implementation of the

[A collaborative study on children with mature B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in China].

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the CCCG-B-NHL 2010 protocol in children with mature B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (B-NHL) in China retrospectively. METHOD: Eight tertiary referral centers for childhood cancer participated in this study. From April 2009 to March 2012, 104 patients below 18 years with newly diagnosed, untreated B-NHL or mature B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) were enrolled. Six patients refused further staging work-up and treatment due to the expense were excluded. Diagnostic slides were not centrally reviewed in this retrospective study. Twe

Primary prevention of childhood obesity through counselling sessions at Swedish child health centres: design, methods and baseline sample characteristics of the PRIMROSE cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a growing concern in Sweden. Children with overweight and obesity run a high risk of becoming obese as adults, and are likely to develop comorbidities. Despite the immense demand, there is still a lack of evidence-based comprehensive prevention programmes targeting pre-school children and their families in primary health care settings. The aims are to describe the design and methodology of the PRIMROSE cluster-randomised controlled trial, assess the relative validity of a food frequency questionnaire, and describe the baseline characteristics of the eligible yo

Long-term follow-up of children who underwent severe hypospadias repair using an online survey with validated questionnaires.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies of hypospadias repair in childhood have used validated questionnaires to investigate outcomes of cosmesis, urinary function, and sexual function in adulthood. We sought to investigate long-term outcomes in adult patients who had undergone severe hypospadias repair as children using an existing web-based application available to multiple institutions in order to develop an online patient survey of previously validated questionnaires. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients aged 18 years or older who underwent severe hypospadias repair between 1992 and 1997 at our institution wer

Early speech-language development in females with Rett syndrome: focusing on the preserved speech variant.

AIM: Our aim was to contribute new findings related to the pre-regressional verbal development of females with a variant of Rett syndrome (RTT) as the loss of spoken language is one of the key clinical features of RTT, and it would be of particular interest to study the early speech-language development of females who are considered to have preserved some speech-language abilities. METHOD: We analysed 461 minutes of audio-video recordings containing play situations and the daily routines of six females (aged 7 to 24 months; mean birthweight 3057g, SD 195g) with the preserved speech variant (P
