Predicting Risk of Ammonia Exposure in Broiler Housing: Correlation with Incidence of Health Issues.

The study aimed to forecast ammonia exposure risk in broiler chicken production, correlating it with health injuries using machine learning. Two chicken breeds, fast-growing (Ross®) and slow-growing (Hubbard®), were compared at different densities. Slow-growing birds had a constant density of 32 kg m-2, while fast-growing birds had low (16 kg m-2) and high (32 kg m-2) densities. Initial feeding was uniform, but nutritional demands led to varied diets later. Environmental data underwent selection, pre-processing, transformation, mining, analysis, and interpretation. Classification algorithms (d

Machine Learning as a Diagnostic and Prognostic Tool for Predicting Thrombosis in Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review.

Khorana score (KS) is an established risk assessment model for predicting cancer-associated thrombosis. However, it ignores several risk factors and has poor predictability in some cancer types. Machine learning (ML) is a novel technique used for the diagnosis and prognosis of several diseases, including cancer-associated thrombosis, when trained on specific diagnostic modalities. Consolidating the literature on the use of ML for the prediction of cancer-associated thrombosis is necessary to understand its diagnostic and prognostic abilities relative to KS. This systematic review aims to evalu

An all-inclusive model for predicting invasive bacterial infection in febrile infants age 7-60 days.

BACKGROUND: Invasive bacterial infections (IBIs) in febrile infants are rare but potentially devastating. We aimed to derive and validate a predictive model for IBI among febrile infants age 7-60 days. METHODS: Data were abstracted retrospectively from electronic records of 37 emergency departments (EDs) for infants with a measured temperature >=100.4 F who underwent an ED evaluation with blood and urine cultures. Models to predict IBI were developed and validated respectively using a random 80/20 dataset split, including 10-fold cross-validation. We used precision recall curves as the classi

Identification and validation of the nicotine metabolism-related signature of bladder cancer by bioinformatics and machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Several studies indicate that smoking is one of the major risk factors for bladder cancer. Nicotine and its metabolites, the main components of tobacco, have been found to be strongly linked to the occurrence and progression of bladder cancer. However, the function of nicotine metabolism-related genes (NRGs) in bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA) are still unclear. METHODS: NRGs were collected from MSigDB to identify the clusters associated with nicotine metabolism. Prognostic differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were filtered via differentially expression analysis and univariate

Characterizing Vocal Hyperfunction Using Ecological Momentary Assessment of Relative Fundamental Frequency.

Many common voice disorders are associated with vocal hyperfunction (VH), with subtypes including phonotraumatic VH (leading to organic vocal fold lesions such as nodules and/or polyps) and nonphonotraumatic VH (often diagnosed as primary muscle tension dysphonia). VH has been hypothesized to influence baseline vocal fold tension during phonation, and the relative fundamental frequency (RFF) during onset and offset cycles of phonation has been related to vocal fold tension and has been shown to differentiate typical voices from patients with VH in laboratory settings. In this study, we investi

Rapid assessment of the blood-feeding histories of wild-caught malaria mosquitoes using mid-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning.

BACKGROUND: The degree to which Anopheles mosquitoes prefer biting humans over other vertebrate hosts, i.e. the human blood index (HBI), is a crucial parameter for assessing malaria transmission risk. However, existing techniques for identifying mosquito blood meals are demanding in terms of time and effort, involve costly reagents, and are prone to inaccuracies due to factors such as cross-reactivity with other antigens or partially digested blood meals in the mosquito gut. This study demonstrates the first field application of mid-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning (MIRS-ML), to rapi

Prediction of KRASG12C inhibitors using conjoint fingerprint and machine learning-based QSAR models.

Kirsten rat sarcoma virus G12C (KRASG12C) is the major protein mutation associated with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) severity. Inhibiting KRASG12C is therefore one of the key therapeutic strategies for NSCLC patients. In this paper, a cost-effective data driven drug design employing machine learning-based quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis was built for predicting ligand affinities against KRASG12C protein. A curated and non-redundant dataset of 1033 compounds with KRASG12C inhibitory activity (pIC50) was used to build and test the models. The PubChem fingerprin

A simplified coronary model for diagnosis of ischemia-causing coronary stenosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The functional assessment of the severity of coronary stenosis from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA)-derived fractional flow reserve (FFR) has recently attracted interest. However, existing algorithms run at high computational cost. Therefore, this study proposes a fast calculation method of FFR for the diagnosis of ischemia-causing coronary stenosis. METHODS: We combined CCTA and machine learning to develop a simplified single-vessel coronary model for rapid calculation of FFR. First, a zero-dimensional model of single-vessel coronary was established

Artificial intelligence applied to neuroimaging data in Parkinsonian syndromes: Actuality and expectations.

Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (iPD) is a common motor neurodegenerative disorder. It affects more frequently the elderly population, causing a significant emotional burden both for the patient and caregivers, due to the disease-related onset of motor and cognitive disabilities. iPD's clinical hallmark is the onset of cardinal motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rest tremor, rigidity, and postural instability. However, these symptoms appear when the neurodegenerative process is already in an advanced stage. Furthermore, the greatest challenge is to distinguish iPD from other similar neurodege

A Novel Multiple-Cue Observational Clinical Scale for Functional Evaluation of Gait After Stroke - The Stroke Mobility Score (SMS).

BACKGROUND For future development of machine learning tools for gait impairment assessment after stroke, simple observational whole-body clinical scales are required. Current observational scales regard either only leg movement or discrete overall parameters, neglecting dysfunctions in the trunk and arms. The purpose of this study was to introduce a new multiple-cue observational scale, called the stroke mobility score (SMS). MATERIAL AND METHODS In a group of 131 patients, we developed a 1-page manual involving 6 subscores by Delphi method using the video-based SMS: trunk posture, leg movemen

See your mental state from your walk: Recognizing anxiety and depression through Kinect-recorded gait data.

As the challenge of mental health problems such as anxiety and depression increasing today, more convenient, objective, real-time assessing techniques of mental state are in need. The Microsoft Kinect camera is a possible option for contactlessly capturing human gait, which could reflect the walkers' mental state. So we tried to propose a novel method for monitoring individual's anxiety and depression based on the Kinect-recorded gait pattern. In this study, after finishing the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), 179 participan

A speed-adaptive intraspinal microstimulation controller to restore weight-bearing stepping in a spinal cord hemisection model.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to develop control strategies to produce alternating, weight-bearing stepping in a cat model of hemisection spinal cord injury (SCI) using intraspinal microstimulation (ISMS). APPROACH: Six cats were anesthetized and the functional consequences of a hemisection SCI were simulated by manually moving one hind-limb through the gait cycle over a moving treadmill belt. ISMS activated the muscles in the other leg by stimulating motor networks in the lumbosacral enlargement using low levels of current (<110 µA). The control strategy used signals from ground reac
