Growth response to growth hormone treatment in patients with SHOX deficiency can be predicted by the Cologne prediction model.

UNLABELLED: Background Growth hormone (GH) treatment in children with short stature homeobox-containing gene (SHOX) deficiency is recognized to increase height velocity (HV) and adult height. Prediction of growth response continues to be a challenge. A comparatively accurate method is the Cologne prediction model developed in children with GH deficiency. The aim was to investigate whether this model also applies to patients with SHOX deficiency. Methods Included were 48 patients with SHOX deficiency confirmed by DNA analysis and treated with 0.05 mg/kg/day of somatropin. Prediction by the Colo

Phenotypes of childhood wheeze in Japanese children: A group-based trajectory analysis.

BACKGROUND: Exploring patterns of childhood wheeze may help to clarify the etiology and prognosis of respiratory diseases. The purpose of this study was to classify phenotypes of wheezing in children up to 9 years of age in Japan and to evaluate the individual and environmental risk factors for these phenotypes. METHODS: Wheeze was evaluated at approximately 1-year intervals based on the mothers' recollection of their child's wheezing or whistling in the chest during the preceding 12 months. The children were aged 1-9 years. In total, 1116 children who had at least five measures of wheezing a

A study into fingermarks at activity level on pillowcases.

In this paper, we describe a promising method to evaluate the location of fingermarks on two-dimensional objects, which provides valuable information for the evaluation of fingermarks at activity level. For this purpose, an experiment with pillowcases was conducted at the Dutch music festival Lowlands, to test whether the activity 'smothering' can be distinguished from an alternative activity like 'changing a pillowcase' based on the touch traces on pillowcases left by the activities. Participants performed two activities with paint on their hands: smothering a victim with the use of a pillow

Lamotrigine pharmacokinetics following oral and stable-labeled intravenous administration in young and elderly adult epilepsy patients: Effect of age.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of age on pharmacokinetic parameters of lamotrigine (LTG) and estimate parameter variability. METHODS: Patients (>18 years old) who were already on a steady-state dose of LTG therapy with no interacting comedications were enrolled. Patients with significant cardiac disease, severe kidney dysfunction, or moderate-to-severe liver dysfunction were excluded. Fifty milligrams of a stable-labeled intravenous LTG formulation (SL-LTG) replaced 50 mg of a patient's normal daily oral LTG dose. Thirteen blood samples were collected i

Incorporating the rotational setup uncertainty into the planning target volume margin expansion for the single isocenter for multiple targets technique.

PURPOSE: The single isocenter for multiple targets (SIMT) technique has become a popular treatment approach for multiple brain metastases. However, the rotational error that is introduced is usually not considered in planning target volume (PTV) expansion. We have developed a statistical model that takes into account both translational and rotational uncertainties. In this study, we incorporated the rotational error into PTV margin expansion for the clinical use of the SIMT technique. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In the statistical model, both translational and rotational errors are assumed to foll

Core psychopathology of treatment-seeking patients with binge-eating disorder: a network analysis investigation.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders may emerge as the result of interactions between observable symptoms. Such interactions can be analyzed using network analysis. Several recent studies have used network analysis to examine eating disorders, indicating a core role of overvaluation of weight and shape. However, no studies to date have applied network models to binge-eating disorder (BED), the most prevalent eating disorder. METHODS: We constructed a cross-sectional graphical LASSO network in a sample of 788 individuals with BED. Symptoms were assessed using the Eating Disorders Examination Interview

Combining public participatory surveillance and occupancy modelling to predict the distributional response of Ixodes scapularis to climate change.

Ixodes scapularis, a known vector of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (Bbss), is undergoing range expansion in many parts of Canada. The province of New Brunswick, which borders jurisdictions with established populations of I. scapularis, constitutes a range expansion zone for this species. To better understand the current and potential future distribution of this tick under climate change projections, this study applied occupancy modelling to distributional records of adult ticks that successfully overwintered, obtained through passive surveillance. This study indicates that I. scapularis o

An Acarological Risk Model Predicting the Density and Distribution of Host-Seeking Ixodes scapularis Nymphs in Minnesota.

Ixodes scapularis is the vector of at least seven human pathogens in Minnesota, two of which are known to cause Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and Borrelia mayonii). In Minnesota, the statewide incidence of Lyme disease and other I. scapularis-borne diseases and the geographic extent over which cases have been reported have both increased substantially over the last two decades. These changes correspond with an expanding distribution of I. scapularis over a similar time frame. Because the risk of exposure to I. scapularis-borne pathogens is likely related to the number of tic

Human ectoparasites and the spread of plague in Europe during the Second Pandemic.

Plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, can spread through human populations by multiple transmission pathways. Today, most human plague cases are bubonic, caused by spillover of infected fleas from rodent epizootics, or pneumonic, caused by inhalation of infectious droplets. However, little is known about the historical spread of plague in Europe during the Second Pandemic (14-19th centuries), including the Black Death, which led to high mortality and recurrent epidemics for hundreds of years. Several studies have suggested that human ectoparasite vectors, such as human fleas (Pulex

A joint model for multivariate hierarchical semicontinuous data with replications.

Longitudinal data are often collected in biomedical applications in such a way that measurements on more than one response are taken from a given subject repeatedly overtime. For some problems, these multiple profiles need to be modeled jointly to get insight on the joint evolution and/or association of these responses over time. In practice, such longitudinal outcomes may have many zeros that need to be accounted for in the analysis. For example, in dietary intake studies, as we focus on in this paper, some food components are eaten daily by almost all subjects, while others are consumed epis

The Potential Role of Direct and Indirect Contacts on Infection Spread in Dairy Farm Networks.

Animals' exchanges are considered the most effective route of between-farm infectious disease transmission. However, despite being often overlooked, the infection spread due to contaminated equipment, vehicles, or personnel proved to be important for several livestock epidemics. This study investigated the role of indirect contacts in a potential infection spread in the dairy farm network of the Province of Parma (Northern Italy). We built between-farm contact networks using data on cattle exchange (direct contacts), and on-farm visits by veterinarians (indirect contacts). We compared the feat

Trend and seasonality of community-acquired Escherichia coli antimicrobial resistance and its dynamic relationship with antimicrobial use assessed by ARIMA models.

INTRODUCTION: We studied the trend and seasonality of community-acquired Escherichia coli resistance and quantified its correlation with the previous use of certain antibiotics. METHODS: A time series study of resistant community-acquired E. coli isolates and their association with antibiotic use was conducted in a Primary Health Care Area from 2008 to 2012. A Poisson regression model was constructed to estimate the trend and seasonality of E. coli resistance. RESULTS: A significant increasing trend in mean E. coli resistance to cephalosporins, aminoglycosides and nitrofurantoin was observed

A meta-analysis of montelukast for recurrent wheeze in preschool children.

UNLABELLED: There is conflicting evidence of the effectiveness of montelukast in preschool wheeze. A recent Cochrane review focused on its use in viral-induced wheeze; however, such subgroups are unlikely to exist in real life and change with time, recently highlighted in an international consensus report. We have therefore sought to investigate the effectiveness of montelukast in all children with preschool wheeze (viral-induced and multiple-trigger wheeze). The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Ovid Medline and Ovid EMBASE were screened for randomised controlled trials (RCTs), examining the efficacy

Estimating incidence and prevalence rates of chronic diseases using disease modeling.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity estimates between different GP registration networks show large, unexplained variations. This research explores the potential of modeling differences between networks in distinguishing new (incident) cases from existing (prevalent) cases in obtaining more reliable estimates. METHODS: Data from five Dutch GP registration networks and data on four chronic diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], diabetes, heart failure, and osteoarthritis of the knee) were used. A joint model (DisMod model) was fitted using all information on morbidity (incidence and prevale

Modelling disease activity in juvenile dermatomyositis: A Bayesian approach.

Juvenile dermatomyositis is the most common form of the juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathies characterised by muscle and skin inflammation, leading to symmetric proximal muscle weakness and cutaneous symptoms. It has a fluctuating course and varying prognosis. In a Bayesian framework, we develop a joint model for four longitudinal outcomes, which accounts for within individual variability as well as inter-individual variability. Correlations among the outcome variables are introduced through a subject-specific random effect. Moreover, we exploit an approach similar to a hurdle model to

Network theory may explain the vulnerability of medieval human settlements to the Black Death pandemic.

Epidemics can spread across large regions becoming pandemics by flowing along transportation and social networks. Two network attributes, transitivity (when a node is connected to two other nodes that are also directly connected between them) and centrality (the number and intensity of connections with the other nodes in the network), are widely associated with the dynamics of transmission of pathogens. Here we investigate how network centrality and transitivity influence vulnerability to diseases of human populations by examining one of the most devastating pandemic in human history, the four

Adding tests to risk based guidelines: evaluating improvements in prediction for an intermediate risk group.

Using an additional test in patients who are not at high enough risk of developing disease to confidently treat, or low enough risk to confidently not treat would seem to be a straightforward way to resolve the clinical equipoise and is recommended by many guidelines. However, clear methods for evaluating the population utility of additional tests in this group have not been established. This paper includes worked examples and simulation data to show that focus on the intermediate risk group alone can be misleading and that population utility is best evaluated across the full range of risk.

The Effect of l-Arginine on Dural Healing After Experimentally Induced Dural Defect in a Rat Model.

BACKGROUND: Incomplete repair of the dura mater may result in numerous complications such as cerebrospinal fluid leakage and meningitis. For this reason, accurate repair of the dura mater is essential. In this study, the effect of systemic and local supplementation of l-arginine on dural healing was evaluated. METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were used and divided into control, local, and systemic l-arginine groups, with 10 rats in each. In each group, a 5-mm experimental incision was made at the lumbar segment of the dura mater and cerebrospinal fluid leakage was induced. Each group was divi
