Detection of the primary lesion in patients with cervical metastases from unknown primary tumors with narrow band imaging endoscopy: preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether the addition of narrow band imaging (NBI) to standard diagnostic workups could enhance the detection of primary lesions in patients with carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP). METHODS: Thirty patients with CUP underwent NBI endoscopy and fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/CT (FDG-PET/CT) after thorough conventional diagnostic workups between 2009 and 2011. Sites suspected of harboring primary tumors, as determined by NBI and/or FDG-PET/CT, were biopsied for histologic confirmation. RESULTS: Occult primary tumors were identified in 33.3% (10/30),

Atlas-based assessment of hypomyelination: Quantitative MRI in Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease.

Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) is a rare childhood hypomyelinating leukodystrophy. Quantification of the pronounced myelin deficit and delineation of subtle myelination processes are of high clinical interest. Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) techniques can provide in vivo insights into myelination status, its spatial distribution, and dynamics during brain maturation. They may serve as potential biomarkers to assess the efficacy of myelin-modulating therapies. However, registration techniques for image quantification and statistical comparison of affected pediatric brains, e

Performance of magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of first-time and reoperative primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative imaging in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and a previous parathyroid operation is essential; however, performance of conventional imaging is poor in this subgroup. Magnetic resonance imaging appears to be a good alternative, though overall evidence remains scarce. We retrospectively investigated the performance of magnetic resonance imaging in patients with and without a previous parathyroid operation, with a separate comparison for dynamic gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: All patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging prior to p

NFSAOA: a new approach of medical brain image fusion using neutrosophic fuzzy set and arithmetic optimization algorithm.

Diagnostic accuracy in medical imaging depends on high-quality multimodal image fusion (MMIF). It improves image quality by combining data from diverse imaging modalities. However, many existing fusion approaches fail to capture distinct information from diverse modalities, resulting in an incomplete fused image and potentially a misleading, incorrect diagnosis. To address these issues, we propose a new approach to the MMIF framework that incorporates a neutrosophic fuzzy set (NFS) with a feature extraction and arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA), which are designed to eliminate the uncert

Cognitive Implications of Correlated Structural Network Changes in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a brain disorder characterized by diffuse, diverse, and wide-spread changes in gray matter volume (GM) and white matter structure (fractional anisotropy, FA), as well as cognitive impairments that greatly impact an individual's quality of life. While the relationship of each of these image modalities and their links to schizophrenia status and cognitive impairment has been investigated separately, a multimodal fusion via parallel independent component analysis (pICA) affords the opportunity to explore the relationships between the changes in GM and FA, and the impl

SGF-RWKV: Semantic-Guided and Frequency-Enhanced RWKV for Unified Medical Image Denoising.

Medical image denoising is essential for enhancing diagnostic accuracy and clinical applicability. Since diverse imaging modalities exhibit heterogeneous noise characteristics, developing a unified all-in-one frame work is critical to avoid modality-specific solutions and improve generalization. However, existing approaches struggle with three key challenges: difficulty in uniformly modeling multimodal noise, loss of structural details, and limited spatial context modeling. To addressthis issue, wepropose SGF-RWKV, a unified medical image denoising framework built upon the Receptance Weighted

AI-Driven Atrial Fibrillation Management: From Signal to Strategy.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia worldwide and is associated with substantial morbidity, including ischemic stroke, heart failure, and cognitive decline. Despite established diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, AF remains frequently underdiagnosed and suboptimally managed, particularly in asymptomatic or paroxysmal cases, in which the episodic nature of the arrhythmia may make it difficult to detect using standard electrocardiography. Artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning and deep learning, has emerged as a transformative technology

Picometre-scale real-time drift correction in TEM and STEM by dynamic control of the specimen stage for atomic-resolution imaging.

In this work, we show how the specimen drift can be actively compensated by controlling the stage with precision down to the picometre scale. We do this by dynamic control, a generic real-time feedback framework designed to actively stabilize electron microscopy experiments by continuously monitoring an experimental variable from the detector data stream and compensating its evolution during acquisition. The framework, applicable to a broad range of controllable experimental instabilities, includes automated calibration procedures, operates in parallel with image acquisition and is implemented

Peripapillary Intrachoroidal Cavitation in High Myopia: A Case Report.

Peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation (PICC) is an increasingly recognized structural alteration predominantly observed in highly myopic eyes and considered part of the spectrum of myopic posterior segment remodeling. Progressive axial elongation and associated biomechanical stress at the level of the optic nerve head and peripapillary region are thought to contribute to localized choroidal splitting and cavitation formation. The advent of enhanced depth imaging and swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) has significantly improved the visualization of the choroid, allowing the pr

The COPD-driven "lung-eye axis": mechanisms and clinical evidence of ocular disease.

COPD is a chronic systemic disease marked by ongoing airflow obstruction, sustained inflammation, and increased oxidative stress, whose pathological impact extends far beyond the lungs. Growing data suggest that COPD impacts the eye via chronic systemic inflammation, intermittent or persistent hypoxia, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction, establishing a cross-system pathological connection termed the "lung-eye axis." Evidence from clinical and experimental studies indicates potential associations between COPD and key ophthalmic conditions, such as dry eye disease, cataract, glaucoma,

Treatment Effects on Chronic Active Lesions in Multiple Sclerosis: Current Evidence and Future Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by chronic, compartmentalized inflammation persisting behind a relatively intact blood-brain barrier. This process can be assessed in vivo using neuroimaging biomarkers of chronic active lesions (CALs): paramagnetic rim lesions (PRLs), slowly expanding lesions (SELs), and lesions showing increased uptake of 18-kDa translocator protein (TSPO) positron emission tomography (PET) tracers. Given their association with more severe structural damage, clinical disability, and disease progression, CALs represent a biologically relevant target to as

Current trends in blood biomarkers detection and neuroimaging for Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by both motor and cognitive impairments. A significant challenge in managing PD is the variability of symptoms and disease progression rates. This variability is primarily attributed to unclear biomarkers associated with the disease and the lack of early diagnostic technologies and effective imaging methods. PD-specific biomarkers are essential for developing practical tools that facilitate accurate diagnosis, patient stratification, and monitoring of disease progression. Hence, creating valuable tools for detecting and dia

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma and treatment of epilepsy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is a rare central nervous system (CNS) tumor. Clinical manifestations often start with seizures, and the lesions are often located in the superficial parts of the cerebral hemisphere, especially in the temporal lobe. Patients with PXA can be cured via surgical treatment, but whether the seizure can be controlled by simply removing the tumor through surgery still needs to be determined. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 10-year-old boy with clinical manifestations of recurrent epileptic seizures. Preoperative standardized antiepileptic drug tre
