Prediction of acute toxicity in fish by using QSAR methods and chemical modes of action.

Three quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models were evaluated for their power to predict the toxicity of chemicals in two datasets: (1) EPAFHM (US Environmental Protection Agency-Fathead Minnow) and (2) derivatives having a high production volume (HPV), as compiled by the European Chemical Bureau. For all three QSAR models, the quality of the predictions was found to be highly dependent on the mode of action of the chemicals. An analysis of outliers from the three models gives some clues for improving the QSAR models. Two classification methods, Toxtree and a Bayesian approac

An innovative approach for predicting prostate cancer Gleason grading: machine learning-based fusion of multimodal ultrasound, clinical and laboratory indicators.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is a common malignancy among elderly males with a growing incidence. While prostate biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosis, this invasive procedure is poorly tolerated by some patients. The Gleason grade group (GGG) plays a critical role in predicting metastatic risk, guiding treatment selection, and is strongly associated with survival outcomes. Consequently, noninvasive prediction of prostate cancer Gleason grading has emerged as a research priority. This study aimed to develop a noninvasive predictive model integrating multimodal ultrasound data and clini

Neural network-based prediction of atrial fibrillation at discharge following cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative atrial fibrillation is a common complication after cardiac surgery, associated with both short- and long-term adverse effects. Persistent forms of postoperative atrial fibrillation lasting until hospital discharge are less frequent but clinically significant. Despite its impact, reliable prediction remains challenging. This study aimed to develop and evaluate machine learning models that integrate electrocardiographic and clinical variables to predict atrial fibrillation at discharge. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, 1,905 patients undergoing cardi

An uncertainty approach for Electric Submersible Pump modeling through Deep Neural Network.

This work proposes a new methodology to identify and validate deep learning models for artificial oil lift systems that use submersible electric pumps. The proposed methodology allows for obtaining the models and evaluating the prediction's uncertainty jointly and systematically. The methodology employs a nonlinear model to generate training and validation data and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm to assess the neural network's epistemic uncertainty. The nonlinear model was used to overcome the limitations of the need for big datasets for training deep learning models. However, the devel

Learning coordinated badminton skills for legged manipulators.

Coordinating the motion between lower and upper limbs and aligning limb control with perception are substantial challenges in robotics, particularly in dynamic environments. To this end, we introduce an approach for enabling legged mobile manipulators to play badminton, a task that requires precise coordination of perception, locomotion, and arm swinging. We propose a unified reinforcement learning-based control policy for whole-body visuomotor skills involving all degrees of freedom to achieve effective shuttlecock tracking and striking. This policy is informed by a perception noise model tha

Predicting clinical events characterizing the progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis via machine learning approaches using routine visits data: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that results in death within a short time span (3-5 years). One of the major challenges in treating ALS is its highly heterogeneous disease progression and the lack of effective prognostic tools to forecast it. The main aim of this study was, then, to test the feasibility of predicting relevant clinical outcomes that characterize the progression of ALS with a two-year prediction horizon via artificial intelligence techniques using routine visits data. METHODS: Three classification problems were consider

Detection and cross-organ characterization of physiological response to microplastic stress in Panax ginseng based on hyperspectral imaging assisted with machine learning.

Microplastic pollution can affect growth and quality of medicinal plants, yet rapid detection of microplastic stress responses remains underexplored. We treated ginseng with polyethylene microplastics, acquired leaf hyperspectral images (HSI) on day 23, and constructed machine learning models for identifying stress levels and predicting physiological indicators. Furthermore, the applicability of successive projections algorithm (SPA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) for characteristic wavelength selection was compared. Results showed that polyethylene stress significantly af
