BACKGROUND: The formation of compulsive pattern of drug use is related to abnormal regional neural activity and functional reorganization in the heroin addicts' brain, but the relationship between heroin-use-induced disrupted local neural activity and its functional organization pattern in resting-state is unknown.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: With fMRI data acquired during resting state from 17 male heroin dependent individuals (HD) and 15 matched normal controls (NC), we analyzed the changes of amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) in brain areas, and its relationship with histor

BACKGROUND: Generalized social phobia (GSP) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are both associated with emotion dysregulation. Research implicates dorsal anterior cingulate cortex in both explicit emotion regulation (EER) and top-down attentional control (TAC). Although studies have examined these processes in GSP or GAD, no work compares findings across the two disorders or examines functioning in cases comorbid for both disorders (GSP/GAD). Here we compare the neural correlates of EER and TAC in GSP, GAD, and GSP/GAD.
METHODS: Medication-free adults with GSP (EER n = 19; TAC n = 18), GA

BACKGROUND: Functional neuroimaging studies on both cognitive processing and psychopathology in patients with major depression have reported several functionally aberrant brain areas within limbic-cortical circuits. However, less is known about the relationship between psychopathology, cognitive deficits and regional volume alterations in this patient population.
METHODS: By means of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and a standardized neuropsychological test battery, we examined 15 patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for major depression disorder and 14 healthy controls in order to investigate the

The digits forward (DF) and backward (DB) tasks are widely used neuropsychological measures believed to tap overlapping systems of phonological processing and working memory. Studies of focal brain lesions have partially elucidated the brain regions essential for these tasks; however relatively little information exists on the underlying functional neuroanatomy in the intact brain. We therefore examined the shared and separate neural systems of these tasks in two positron emission tomography (PET) experiments. In Experiment 1, eight healthy participants performed verbal DF, DB, and a sensorimo

OBJECTIVES: Several lines of evidence suggest that deficits in cognition persist in bipolar patients during periods of euthymia. Working memory impairment has been observed in euthymic bipolar patients and noted to be a significant source of functional deficits in psychiatric disorders. Functional changes associated with these cognitive deficits however, remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that patients with bipolar disorder would demonstrate changes in neuronal activation in specific regions forming part of the working memory network.
METHODS: Fifteen euthymic bipolar patients and fift

In exercise, little is known about local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU), which is an index of functional neurogenic activity. We measured LCGU in resting and running (approximately 85% of maximum O2 uptake) rats (n = 7 in both groups) previously equipped with a tail artery catheter. LCGU was measured quantitatively from 2-deoxy-D-[1-14C]glucose autoradiographs. During exercise, total cerebral glucose utilization (TCGU) increased by 38% (p < 0.005). LCGU increased (p < 0.05) in areas involved in motor function (motor cortex 39%, cerebellum approximately 110%, basal ganglia approximately 30

Callosal abnormalities disrupt interhemispheric communications that impair the recovery of a series of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Understanding interhemispheric communication could help identify treatments for disorders with dysfunctional callosal transmission. This study aimed to validate the sensitivity of a TMS-EEG-based measure of interhemispheric signal propagation (ISP) to GABAB receptor modulation, while independently replicating the pharmacological mechanisms of interhemispheric inhibition. A group of 29 participants received an oral dose of either baclofen, a GABAB recept

ObjectiveExamine cortical activation patterns in Huntington's disease (HD) under single-task (ST) and dual-task (DT) balance conditions compared to controls using portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).BackgroundIndividuals with HD have difficulty multitasking while performing balance tasks, so previously automatic tasks may require more attentional resources to maintain stability and prevent falls. Our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying the relationship between impaired cognition and balance in HD is minimal. fNIRS provides a noninvasive means to functionally im

The Claustrum/dorsal endopiriform cortex complex (CLA) is an enigmatic brain region with extensive glutamatergic projections to multiple cortical areas. The transcription factor Nurr1 is highly expressed in the CLA, but its role in this region is not understood. By using conditional gene-targeted mice, we show that Nurr1 is a crucial regulator of CLA neuron identity. Although CLA neurons remain intact in the absence of Nurr1, the distinctive gene expression pattern in the CLA is abolished. CLA has been hypothesized to control hallucinations, but little is known of how the CLA responds to hallu

Synaptic plasticity is one of the putative mechanisms involved in the maturation of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during postnatal development. Early life stress (ELS) affects the shaping of cortical circuitries through impairment of synaptic plasticity supporting the onset of mood disorders. Growing evidence suggests that dysfunctional postnatal maturation of the prelimbic division (PL) of the PFC might be related to the emergence of depression. The potassium channel TREK-1 has attracted particular interest among many factors that modulate plasticity, concerning synaptic modifications that coul

Understanding weight-related differences in functional connectivity provides key insight into neurocognitive factors implicated in obesity. Here, we sampled three groups from human connectome project data: 1) 47 pairs of BMI-discordant twins (n = 94; average BMI-discordancy 6.7 ± 3.1 kg/m2), 2) 47 pairs of gender and BMI matched BMI-discordant, unrelated individuals, and 3) 47 pairs of BMI-similar twins, to test for body mass dependent differences in between network functional connectivity. Across BMI discordant samples, three networks appeared to be highly sensitive to weight status; specific

Few studies have explored the neurobiological basis of insight level in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), though the salience network (SN) has been implicated in insight deficits in schizophrenia. This study was then designed to investigate whether resting-state (rs) functional connectivity (FC) of SN was associated with insight level in OCD patients. We analyzed rs-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 21 OCD patients with good insight (OCD-GI), 19 OCD patients with poor insight (OCD-PI), and 24 healthy controls (HCs). Seed-based whole-brain FC and ROI (region of interest)

OBJECTIVE The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is understood to have a role in outcome evaluation and risk assessment and is commonly involved with infiltrative tumors. A detailed understanding of the exact location and nature of associated white matter tracts could significantly improve postoperative morbidity related to declining capacity. Through diffusion tensor imaging-based fiber tracking validated by gross anatomical dissection as ground truth, the authors have characterized these connections based on relationships to other well-known structures. METHODS Diffusion imaging from the Human Conne

Dissociative amnesia is characterized by an inability to retrieve information already saved in memories. 5-HT has some role in neural regulatory control and may be related to the recovery from dissociative amnesia. To examine the role of 5-HT1A receptors in the recovery from dissociative amnesia, we performed two positron emission tomography (PET) scans on a 30-year-old patient of dissociative amnesia using [(11)C]WAY-100635, the first at amnesic state, and the second at the time he had recovered. Exploratory voxel-based analysis (VBA) was performed using SPM software. 5-HT1A BPND images were

The regions of the monkey brain involved in cognito-behavioral tasks were mapped using the H2(15)O positron emission tomography (PET) activation technique. Monkeys performed hand movements in an asymmetrically rewarded go/no-go reaction-time task with discrimination between green (go) and red (no-go) light signals. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured during the go/no-go task and a control task in which only go signals were presented. In the go/no-go task, when compared with the control, a significant increase in rCBF was noted in the following regions: (1) the principal sulci; (2)

BACKGROUND: Oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) and deoxyhemoglobin (DoHb) levels reflect variations in cerebral oxygen metabolism in demented patients.
PURPOSE: Delineating the metabolic profiles evident throughout different phases of dementia necessitates an integrated analysis of OEF and DoHb levels. This is enabled by leveraging high-resolution quantitative blood oxygenation level dependent (qBOLD) analysis of magnitude images obtained from a multi-echo gradient-echo MRI (mGRE) scan performed on a 3.0 Tesla scanner.
METHODS: Achieving superior spatial resolution in qBOLD necessitates the ut

PURPOSE: Accurate localization of the F3 scalp position is essential for targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), particularly when neuronavigation is unavailable. However, simplified scalp-based heuristic methods may lead to clinically relevant targeting errors due to substantial interindividual variability in cranial morphology. In this context, this study evaluates the geometric accuracy of commonly used and newly proposed scalp-based approaches for localizing the F3 position within the International 10-20 system. Specifically, it

Neural representation of the environment is pertinent for adaptive behaviors. Such neural maps are processed in the hippocampus and contain information about spatial locations, novelties, context, and cues for context discrimination. In conjunction with other subcortical structures, a key function of the hippocampus is to compare newly detected novelties derived from the environment with previously stored cortical memories. These neural events underscore the role of the hippocampus as a “comparator” and “hub” for sorting novelties to determine priority and weight assignments for long-term cort
