IQ scores among homeless older adolescents: characteristics of intellectual performance and associations with psychosocial functioning.

Intellectual performance and the associations of IQ with the quality of psychosocial functioning were studied in a sample of homeless older adolescents. Fifty homeless older adolescents (ages 16-21) completed the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) and a questionnaire assessing psychosocial functioning and sexual risk factors. The WAIS-R scores were comparable to population means, with performance IQ scores tending to be higher than verbal IQ scores. The IQ was unrelated to the duration of homelessness. Higher IQ scores were significantly correlated with only a minority of the m

Psychological characteristics related to cocaine use during pregnancy: a postpartum assessment.

This study assessed four psychological factors that have been suggested by previous research to be highly correlated with drug use. Twenty-one postpartum urban African-American women served as the research participants. At parturition, 10 infants tested positive for cocaine and 11 did not. Measures of depression (Beck Depression Index), anxiety (Spielberger Trait Anxiety Inventory), anger/self-control (Self-Analysis Questionnaire), and sociopathy (California Personality Inventory subscale) were obtained from the mothers within 6 weeks of delivery. Women who gave birth to cocaine-positive infan

Self-inflicted burns: a ten-year retrospective study.

In this 10-year retrospective survey of 2216 admissions to a regional burn center, 15 patients (0.67%) had self-inflicted burn wounds. The burns were serious, with a mean abbreviated burn severity index of 11.2, and eight patients died of their injuries. Nine patients had a documented history of psychiatric problems, seven of whom had undergone a previous psychiatric hospitalization. A psychiatric assessment was obtained for 12 patients immediately after self-immolation, and all but one had a major psychiatric disorder. Seven patients had major depression and four had chronic paranoid schizoph

Effectiveness of real-time continuous glucose monitoring to improve glycaemic control and pregnancy outcome in patients with gestational diabetes mellitus: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rt-CGM) informs users about current interstitial glucose levels and allows early detection of glycaemic excursions and timely adaptation by behavioural change or pharmacological intervention. Randomised controlled studies adequately powered to evaluate the impact of long-term application of rt-CGM systems on the reduction of adverse obstetric outcomes in women with gestational diabetes (GDM) are missing. We aim to assess differences in the proportion of large for gestational age newborns in women using rt-CGM as compared with women with se

Schema-level cognitions in patients with binge eating disorder: a case control study.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the schema-level cognitions (core beliefs) of patients with binge eating disorder to determine whether these patients differ from those with bulimia nervosa. A case control method (matching groups for age and body mass index [BMI]) was used, to avoid the confounding factors that are found in most studies of this sort. METHOD: All clinical women were recruited from a specialist eating disorder clinic. The index group consisted of 25 women with DSM-IV diagnoses of binge eating disorder, who were compared with a clinical group of 25 women with bulimia nervosa and a

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement with a Self-expanding Prosthesis.

Self-expanding transcatheter valves have evolved significantly into mature therapeutic platforms supported by randomized evidence across the spectrum of surgical risk. The most consistent advantages of self-expanding transcatheter aortic valve replacement remain excellent hemodynamics, especially in small annuli, and the technical flexibility conferred by controlled deployment and recapturability. The principal historical liabilities-pacemaker implantation, paravalvular leak, and coronary reaccess-have improved substantially with new devices and refined implantation technique, although none ha

Water Bath Scallop Shucking System Based on Doneness Detection.

In the scallop shucking industry, labor-intensive manual operations and inconsistent product quality remain persistent challenges. To address these issues, this study develops a scallop shucking system based on visual feedback temperature control. To support this system, systematic experiments are conducted to determine the baseline shucking method and its initial parameters. On this basis, the scallop doneness detection model SDD-RT-DETR, serving as the system's core, integrates an enhanced backbone centered on the self-developed module HierarchicalRepBlock, a frequency-domain self-attention
