Chronic pelvic pain treatment understanding what matters: a social media survey.

ABSTRACT: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a debilitating condition that reduces quality of life (QoL). In the United Kingdom, there is currently no standardised treatment pathway for women suffering from CPP. Therefore, it is essential to understand individuals' concerns regarding CPP, their treatment experiences and what they seek from treatment. To do this, we conducted a two-month social media survey focused on the UK population to explore treatment experiences and identify the factors that people consider important to managing their condition. Of 1,279 respondents, women who completed ≥50% of

Oral Health and Social Isolation After 6 Years: Mediation of Oral Functions.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth loss was longitudinally associated with social isolation. The absence of dental prosthesis use was an additional risk factor. However, the mediating pathways for this association are unknown. The aim of this cohort study was to estimate the mediating effect of three oral functions: speaking, smiling and chewing observed at baseline on the association between oral health at baseline and social isolation after 6 years of follow-up. METHODS: The 2010-2016 panel data from 6103 functionally independent participants aged ≥ 65 years who were not socially isolated at baseline was us

Online Racial Discrimination and College Student Mental Health: Social Support as a Moderator.

Many college students experience racism and discrimination, which negatively impacts their mental health. As COVID-19 has brought about increased reliance on virtual spaces, increased online racial discrimination (ORD) has also become a more prevalent issue. ORD may be defined as online behaviors that demean or marginalize individuals or groups based on race. It may occur on social media, through text messaging, online videos/games, and/or online chat rooms. Research has shown that direct ORD predicted mental health difficulties, but the link between vicarious ORD and mental health was less co

Linear self-acceptance and nonlinear social comparison: interacting influences on adolescent depression.

BACKGROUND: This research builds on the understanding that low self-acceptance is an important feature of adolescent depression, and that social comparison is a critical factor in self-concept formation during adolescence. However, there are gaps in our understanding of their interactive effects and the non-linear features between these factors in influencing adolescent depression. AIM: The study attempts to test two main hypotheses: (1) increased levels of self-acceptance will correlate with reduced depressive symptoms and moderate the negative effects of social comparison on depression; and

Quality, Reliability and Accuracy of Hyperthyroidism-Related Content on Social Media Platform TikTok.

OBJECTIVE(S): To evaluate the quality, reliability and accuracy of hyperthyroidism-related content on TikTok using validated assessment tools. METHODS: We systematically searched TikTok for 'hyperthyroid' and 'high thyroid', analysing 115 videos after exclusions. Two independent researchers assessed videos using the Global Quality Scale (GQS, range 0-5) for overall content quality, the modified DISCERN (mDISCERN, range 0-5) for reliability and the Accuracy in Digital Information (ANDI, range 0-4) tool for factual correctness. We categorised creator credentials and content purpose, performing

Social workers' views and experiences of self-care practices: a qualitative interview study.

Self-care is increasingly advocated as necessary for improving social workers' wellbeing. However, it remains a contested term, with limited understanding of social workers' views and experiences of what it constitutes in practice. This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews with nine social workers from three local authorities in Scotland. Informed by vulnerability theory, a six-phase thematic analysis was applied to explore social workers' views and experiences of self-care practices. Three key themes emerged: (1) understanding and conceptualizing self-care, illustrating pract

Association between census-tract Social Vulnerability Index and preterm birth rates.

IMPORTANCE: Preterm birth (PTB) is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Understanding how sociodemographic factors alter the risk of PTB, as quantified by the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), can guide the development of targeted interventions aimed at reducing PTB rates in economically/socially marginalized groups with increased risk. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the association between overall SVI and individual SVI themes on PTB (<37 weeks) and very PTB risk (<32 weeks). DESIGN: This was a retrospective study using data from the Study of Outcomes in Mothers and Inf

Identifying knowledge gaps in social determinants of health and related challenges in Iran; 2023.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic determinants of health (SDH) account for about 40% of modifiable determinants of health, followed by health behaviours (30%), clinical care (20%) and physical environmental factors (10%). The "10/90 gap" is the idea that only 10% of global health research is devoted to conditions that account for 90% of the global disease burden. For over a decade, SDH research centres have been established in Iran to generate evidence and address SDH. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the activities and challenges faced by SDH research centres and identify knowled

Asymmetric projection of introspection reveals a behavioural and neural mechanism for interindividual social coordination.

When we collaborate with others to tackle novel problems, we anticipate how they will perform their part of the task to coordinate behavior effectively. We might estimate how well someone else will perform by extrapolating from estimates of how well we ourselves would perform. This account predicts that our metacognitive model should make accurate predictions when projected onto people as good as, or worse than, us but not on those whose abilities exceed our own. We demonstrate just such a pattern and that it leads to worse coordination when working with people more skilled than ourselves. Met

Relationship between social determinants of health and stroke, and the moderating and mediating effect of depression.

BACKGROUND: Adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) and depression are risk factors for stroke, but whether depression mediates the link between SDoH and stroke remains unclarified. This study utilized NHANES data to characterize the link between SDoH and stroke, as well as the moderating and mediating roles of depression in this link. METHODS: This research analyzed NHANES data from 2005 to 2018. First, weighted logistic regression and subgroup analyses were implemented to study the link between SDoH and stroke. Weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses wer

A Pilot Study of Self-Compassion and Social Media Problems: Associations, Moderations, and Speculations.

Researchers reject the idea that social media use causes anxiety and depression, instead reporting that cognitive and behavioral variables of social media self-control failure, fear of missing out, and social media social comparison contribute to anxiety and depression. While prohibiting, delaying, or fasting from social media are suggested by popular writers as answers to these problems, prohibiting social media is known to be ineffective at preventing these cognitive social media problems once a person begins using social media. Moving forward, counselors should prepare themselves to use the

Alexithymia and Internet Addiction: Mediating Role of Social Connectedness, Impulsivity, and Moderation by Depression.

Internet addiction is a mounting concern in current times. Recent studies indicate a link between alexithymia and Internet addiction, but the underlying mechanisms of this association require more investigation. The present study explores the relationship between alexithymia and Internet addiction, with the mediating effect of Impulsivity and social connectedness, and the moderating effect of depression. A convenience sample of 362 participants between the ages of 18 and 25 years participated in this study and completed the Young's Internet Addiction Test, Toronto-Alexithymia Scale, The Social

Dementia-related needs through the lens of social robotics: a scoping review protocol.

Social robotics, a hybrid discipline that combines robotics with social sciences, has been receiving substantial investments from governments due to the ongoing challenges posed by ageing populations worldwide. Dementia is a neurodegenerative syndrome that requires long-term care and has therefore become an important area for social robotics. The scientific literature has many reports on the "needs" associated with the dementia care ecosystem; however, only a small portion of those needs are currently translated to discussions on social robots. The planned scoping review aims to synthesise evi

Discussing the Interplay of Social Determinants of Health, Aging, and Alzheimer's Biomarkers in U.S. Latinos.

This perspective examines the impact of Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) on the biological age-related decline and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) biomarker trajectories in U.S. Latino populations, emphasizing the need for comprehensive multilevel research frameworks tailored to the community. We discuss the prevailing SDoH among U.S. Latino communities, including economic, educational, and healthcare access inequities that heighten health risks. Subsequently, we examine the pronounced differences in ADRD prevalence and biomarker trajectories among Latinos, suggesting that
