[Historical aspects of the risk factors of Schistosoma intercalatum schistosomiasis].

Bilharziosis is a considerable public health problem. It is caused by many species of schistosoma, four of which have wide geographical distribution: Schistosoma mansoni, S. haematobium, S. japonicum and S. intercalatum. The recently discovered S. intercalatum is limited to central and west Africa. Its spread is progressive and its pathogenicity is not completely known. S. intercalatum bilharziosis is usually manifested in the form of dysentery. The physiopathologic explanation of this clinical manifestation is less clear. Immunopathologically, the formation of an inflammatory granuloma consti

A randomized controlled trial evaluating the use of an intelligent, fully automated 2-dimensional imaging system to detect lame cows and control lameness.

A fully automated 2-dimensional imaging system that uses machine learning to produce real-time mobility scores has been developed and previously externally validated using human mobility scores and foot lesion records as ground truth. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effect of integrating this system into an early detection and prompt treatment lameness management protocol on a large dairy farm in the United Kingdom. A total of 419 multiparous cows ≤30 DIM were randomly allocated to either a control (CON) group (n = 208), managed under the farm's standard protocol or an intervent

User Acceptance of a Virtual Reality Beer Pong Intervention in Postoperative Rehabilitation: Exploratory Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative patients often face pain, reduced mobility, and motivational barriers, while health care systems increasingly struggle with shortages of physiotherapy staff, making the evaluation of digital rehabilitation tools highly relevant. In this context, virtual reality (VR)-based rehabilitation has already shown promise in neurological and musculoskeletal settings, but evidence regarding its acceptance and usability in postoperative inpatient rehabilitation, particularly in surgical settings with potentially older, multimorbid patients, as well as the general acceptance and u

Evaluating the VOCORDER device for early disease detection through breath analysis: study protocol for a two-phase clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: The survival rate of patients with life-threatening diseases primarily depends on the speed of diagnosis. Too often, diseases are detected only after symptoms appear, which usually occurs at later stages of a disease when available treatments may be less effective. Current detection techniques primarily depend on identifying metabolites in biofluids such as blood and urine. The analysis of these fluids is typically performed in laboratories, resulting in lengthy waiting times for patients to receive their results. In severe cases, invasive biopsies and radiative methods are used

Experiences and perspectives of older adults in nursing homes and their families participating in advance care planning: a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of an increasingly aging global population, improving the quality of life and end-of-life care for older adults has become a critical public health concern. Advance care planning(ACP) offers potential benefits, including enhancing the quality of end-of-life care, reducing unnecessary medical interventions, and alleviating the burden on family members. However, in the unique context of nursing homes, the willingness and actual participation of residents and their families in ACP are influenced by various factors. AIM: This systematic review and meta-synthesis a

Implementation of occupation-centred practice by occupational therapists in acute adult physical settings: A mixed method study in a regional and rural health service.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational therapy is underpinned by the belief that occupation facilitates health and wellbeing. However, evidence suggests that occupational therapists encounter challenges to implementing occupation-centred practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the uptake, acceptability and impact of a workplace intervention designed to enhance occupation-centred practice of occupational therapists in an acute adult physical context. METHODS: A concurrent mixed methods study using a pre-post design was employed. The setting was a regional and rural health service in Queensland.

Interventions that challenge established and accepted clinical practice: lessons learnt from a process evaluation of the STOP-APE trial.

BACKGROUND: Developing and implementing interventions that change clinical practice can be challenging and complex. Such interventions can be particularly difficult when attempting to change established behaviours and practices. While extensive literature on implementation of interventions that focus on changing clinical practice exists, understanding of the difficulties involved in implementing interventions that go against accepted clinical practice is limited. OBJECTIVES: To describe the challenges involved in delivering a complex intervention that goes against established clinical practic

Diffusion tensor analysis of white matter tracts is prognostic of persisting post-concussion symptoms in collegiate athletes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: After a concussion diagnosis, the most important issue for patients and loved ones is how long it will take them to recover. The main objective of this study is to develop a prognostic model of concussion recovery. This model would benefit many patients worldwide, allowing for early treatment intervention. METHODS: The Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) consortium study enrolled collegiate athletes from 30 sites (NCAA athletic departments and US Department of Defense service academies), 4 of which participated in the Advanced Research Core, which i

Principles of modern low vision rehabilitation.

Low vision rehabilitation is a new emerging subspecialty drawing from the traditional fields of ophthalmology, optometry, occupational therapy, and sociology, with an ever-increasing impact on our customary concepts of research, education, and services for the visually impaired patient. A multidisciplinary approach and coordinated effort are necessary to take advantage of new scientific advances and achieve optimal results for the patient. Accordingly, the intent of this paper is to outline the principles and details of a modern low vision rehabilitation service. All rehabilitation attempts mu

The Development of a Patient-Centered Digital Health Care Technology for Young Adults in Opioid Use Disorder Treatment: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Young adults, defined as individuals between the ages of 18 and 29 years, drop out of opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment more often than older adults. Premature treatment drop-out substantially increases fatal overdose risk. Self-monitoring through text messaging has been researched extensively among people with OUD to identify drop-out risk factors. Self-monitoring could potentially improve methadone treatment engagement among young adults, who are a population that is both hard to reach and more likely to use technology compared to older adults. Self-monitoring can increase risk

Co-developing a health promotion programme for indigenous youths in Brazil: A concept mapping report.

BACKGROUND: Latin America and the Caribbean Region are home to about 42 million Indigenous people, with about 900,000 living in Brazil. The little routinely collected population-level data from Indigenous communities in the region available shows stark inequities in health and well-being. There are 305 Indigenous ethnic groups, speaking 274 languages, spread across the remote national territory, who have endured long-lasting inequities related to poverty, poor health, and limited access to health care. Malnutrition and mental health are key concerns for young people. Building on our Indigenous

Stepped approach to improving sexual function after gynaecological cancer: the SAFFRON feasibility RCT.

BACKGROUND: Women affected by gynaecological cancer are often unaware of the sexual consequences of both the cancer and its treatment. Most do not receive appropriate advice or help to recover sexual function, and the effect on their sexuality may be profound, both physically and emotionally. However, several potential therapies can be effective in helping recover some sexual engagement and change self-perception around sex. A major initial challenge is informing and involving patients in an appropriate and sensitive manner, and a further issue is delivering therapies in busy gynaelogical onco
