[Low Abuse Potential of Plant-Derived Highly Purified Cannabidiol: A Narrative Review].

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an abundant phytocannabinoid extracted from Cannabis sativa L., along with delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. Plant-derived, highly purified CBD oral solution (100 mg/mL) is approved as Epidiolex® in the United States and as Epidyolex® in Europe for the treatment of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis complex with country-specific labels. CBD appears to reduce the neuronal hyperexcitability through a multimodal mechanism of action, although the precise mechanism remains unknown. Notably, unlike delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, C

Children's exposure to cocaine detected by hair analysis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine is a widespread drug of abuse to which children can also be exposed. The modes of exposure may vary depending on the age of the child. In addition to blood and urine analysis, hair analysis is currently used in some clinical contexts to investigate children's exposure to drugs of abuse, including cocaine. This systematic review aims to collect data on children's exposure to cocaine proven by hair analysis, and to understand whether the concentration of cocaine in the hair of children varies with age, potentially providing insights into the nature of their exposure. METHODS

Upper-Extremity Compartment Syndrome: Comparison of Substance-Related Found Down and Acute Trauma Mechanisms.

PURPOSE: Upper-extremity compartment syndrome can result in functional deficits, loss of limb, and loss of life. Although most commonly caused by trauma, in recent years, opioid and substance-related overdose has led to a rise in patients with "found down" compartment syndrome. Our purpose was to compare clinical presentations and outcomes in patients with upper-extremity compartment syndrome caused by a substance-related found down mechanism to those caused by an acute trauma mechanism. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed to confirm a diagnosis of upper-extremity compartment

Predictors of Substance Use Initiation by Early Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Substance use initiation during early adolescence is associated with later development of substance use and mental health disorders. This study used various domains to predict substance use initiation, defined as trying any nonprescribed substance (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, cannabis), by age 12, using a large longitudinal data set. METHODS: Substance-naive youths from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ages 9-10; N=6,829) were followed for 3 years. A total of 420 variables were examined as predictors of substance use initiation, using a penalized logistic regression wi

"Make yourself un-NIMBY-able": stakeholder perspectives on strategies to mobilize public and political support for overdose prevention centers in the United States of America.

BACKGROUND: Overdose prevention centers (OPCs), also known as supervised injection facilities and safe consumption sites, are evidenced-based interventions for preventing overdose deaths and drug-related morbidities. The pathways to legalizing OPCs in the USA have confronted multiple social, political, and legal obstacles. We conducted a multi-site, qualitative study to explore heterogeneities in these pathways in four jurisdictions, as well as to understand stakeholder perspectives on valuable strategies for galvanizing political and public support for OPCs. METHODS: From July 2022 to Februa

Sexualized drug use and chemsex: A bibliometric and content analysis of published literature.

Sexualized drug use (SDU) describes drug-facilitated sexual enhancement, and chemsex is an SDU subculture involving the use of specific drugs by men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aimed to identify research trends, foci, and themes within the SDU and chemsex-specific literature. The Web of Science Core Collection was searched with a list of SDU synonyms. All SDU-related articles were analyzed using the R package, bibliometrix. Full text review identified chemsex-specific records, and text was extracted verbatim for content analysis in Leximancer. The search returned 1,866 unique recor

Road to perdition? The effect of illicit drug use on labour market outcomes of prime-age men in Mexico.

This research addresses the impact of illicit drug use on labour market outcomes of men in Mexico. We leverage statistical information from three waves of a comparable national survey and make use of the Lewbel's heteroskedasticity-based instrumental variable strategy to deal with the endogeneity of the drug consumption. Our results suggests that drug consumption has fairly negative effects in the Mexican context: it reduces employment, occupational attainment and formality and raises unemployment of local males. These effects seem larger than those estimated for high-income economies.

In Support of the Decriminalization of Personal Drug and Paraphernalia Use and Possession: Position Statement of AMERSA, Inc (Association for Multidisciplinary Education, Research, Substance Use and Addiction).

More than 25% of all arrests made nationwide are related to drug offenses, affecting almost 1.2 million people and their social networks. Furthermore, roughly 20% of people in jails and prisons across the United States are incarcerated for a drug offense and millions more are under community supervision for these charges. This criminalization of drug use has negatively affected the health and well-being of people who use drugs (PWUD) and their communities. Decriminalization-a process of removing criminal sanctions for a previously criminalized behavior-of drug use is central to harm reduction

How we understand fully the supply, demand, and harm reduction in drugs policy in Vietnam?

Since the 1990s, Vietnam has begun prioritising preventing and combating drug-related crimes (supply reduction) and rehabilitating drug users (demand reduction). In the 2000s, harm reduction approaches in relation to drug control began to be recognised as one of Vietnam's opiate substitution therapy methods before embarking on greater drug policy reform in the early 2010s. In implementing the ideology of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the anti-narcotic police forces often apply a zero-tolerance approach to drug traffickers and identify drug users as a priority applies a zero-tolerance approac

Efficacy of Social Norm Interventions on Addictive Behaviours-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials.

Mental health-related behaviours including addictive behaviours contribute significantly to the global burden of disease. Social norm interventions appear to be a cost-effective means of reducing addictive behaviour. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the efficacy of social norm interventions for addictive behaviours. We searched the databases Medline and PsycInfo from inception to April 2024 as well as reference lists of eligible studies and related systematic reviews for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of social norm interventions for addictive b

Universal School-Based Substance Use Prevention Using Technology-Supported Cooperative Learning.

Substance use in adolescence is a significant public health issue, particularly in early-to-mid adolescence, which represents a window of risk in the etiology of substance abuse and dependence. Substance use during this development period often results from affiliation with deviant peers, who model, facilitate, and reinforce use. Existing school-based substance use prevention programs have historically aimed to build adolescent knowledge regarding the dangers of substance use and/or enhance peer refusal skills. Research finds that these programs have had some success in reducing substance use,
