Comprehensive image dataset of flexible pavement: Alligator cracks and edge-breaks from national highway (N6) of urban areas.

This data article introduces a structured pavement surface image dataset developed to advance research in automated pavement condition assessment and data-driven road infrastructure monitoring. The dataset comprises three distinct pavement condition categories: (i) alligator cracking, (ii) edge-breaking distress, and (iii) undamaged (intact) pavement surfaces, each representing a prevalent form of pavement deterioration or intact condition typically observed in flexible pavements. The dataset consists of 12,000 raw images (4000 per class) collected under real-world conditions. These images rep

Cultivating a rural nursing workforce: the impact of rural vs. urban education on nursing students' intentions for rural practice in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Rural-urban maldistribution of health professionals continues to widen health inequities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Nepal, nurses are central to frontline care in remote communities, yet "urban pull" forces and structural constraints undermine rural recruitment and retention. This study examined how training at a rural-embedded institution-Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS)-may shape final-year nursing students' intentions for rural/remote practice and the barriers they anticipate. METHODS: We used a two-site qualitative descriptive design

Topology-modulated end-to-end graph learning for spatiotemporal state inference of urban drainage systems under sparse monitoring.

Reliable perception of urban drainage systems is essential for understanding the dynamic behaviour and managing water-environment risks. Yet structural and hydraulic complexity and sparse sensor deployment constrain the characterisation of evolving operational states. Here, we propose an end-to-end graph learning framework (STGAT) that extracts the spatiotemporal regularities across nodes from sparse and heterogeneous monitoring data. STGAT transforms multi-variable temporal sequences into aligned node-level latent representations within a shared feature space. It then introduces a topology-mo

Improving Access to Human Milk Through a Breast Pump Program for Hospitalized Infants at a Large, Urban Safety Net Hospital.

Human milk is the optimal source of nutrition for infants, especially those born preterm or requiring neonatal intensive care unit care, offering physiologic and psychological benefits for both infants and lactating parents. Despite its importance, access to high-quality electric breast pumps remains a barrier, particularly for underserved populations. To address this, the Lactation Group (LG) at Henry Ford Hospital, a large urban hospital in Detroit, established a Pump Program providing electric pumps to parents facing financial, insurance, or logistical challenges. In the United States, acce

Technical and economic potential of rainwater harvesting systems in semi-arid urban areas: Multicriteria diagnosis for comprehensive evaluation and optimization.

Water scarcity in urban areas of the Global South remains a major challenge. While rainwater harvesting systems (RWHS) are promoted, they often ignore complex hydrological, demographic, and urban interactions. This article explores the question: How to comprehensively assess the technical and economic viability of RWHS, considering housing types, consumption patterns, and variable rainfall, in urban settlements of the Global South? This study presents indicators for diagnosing and assessing the technical and economic efficiency of the RHWS. Six scenarios were analyzed by combining different ra

Influence of microclimate factors on the carbon sequestration capacity of landscape trees in urban built environment: a case study of subtropical city.

Landscape trees are one of the most important urban carbon sinks, and their carbon sequestration capacity is influenced by the unique microclimates of urban built environments. However, the mechanisms underlying this influence remain complex and not fully understood. Here, we combined year-long field measurements of the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) of landscape trees with ENVI-met microclimate simulation and machine learning to develop a predictive framework for a subtropical city. Our key findings revealed that the direct impact of urban microclimatic factors on Pn decreased in the order of s

Urban noise-induced stress and decision-making: effects of high-intensity acoustic exposure on risk-based and intertemporal choices.

INTRODUCTION: Urban noise is one of the most pervasive environmental stressors in Latin American cities, yet its specific effects on complex cognitive processes such as decision-making remain insufficiently studied. This study examined the effects of acute exposure to high-intensity urban noise (85-95 dB[A]) on risk-based and intertemporal decision-making in healthy adults under controlled laboratory conditions, while characterizing the autonomic and subjective stress response and exploring its relationship with cognitive performance. METHODS: A quasi-experimental between-groups design was em

Distinct profiles and elevated exposure to liquid crystal monomers in urban areas: Insights from indoor dust across China.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) added in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are emerging contaminants. While indoor LCD emissions are a potential exposure source, the correlation between LCM concentrations and device numbers, along with urban-rural differences, remains uncharacterized. In this study, indoor dust samples from 10 provinces in China were collected and 60 LCMs were determined. Significant positive correlation (P < 0.05) was observed between LCM concentrations and the numbers of electronic devices. The concentrations of LCMs in the dust from urban areas (78.7-2730 ng/g, average: 565 ng/

Rural-urban disparities in acute pancreatitis outcomes: A retrospective cohort study using the National Inpatient Sample (2016-2021).

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a leading cause of gastrointestinal-related hospitalizations in the United States. Rural-urban healthcare disparities may influence access to care, disease severity, and outcomes; however, national data comparing these populations remain limited. We compared inpatient outcomes and healthcare utilization between rural and urban AP hospitalizations. We performed a retrospective cohort study using the National Inpatient Sample (2016-2021) to identify adult hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of AP. Hospitalizations were classified as rural or urban. Multivariable

Coastal streetlights shape intertidal sessile community abundance and are associated with altered post-disturbance recovery in urban rocky shores.

Coastal urban environments concentrate high levels of artificial light at night (ALAN), yet how persistent light pollution interacts with urban habitat conditions to shape intertidal community structure remains poorly understood. Here, we combined field surveys on natural rocky platforms and on breakwaters along the coast of northern and central Chile (20°S-33°S; eight sites per habitat type) with a 573-day field experiment at a single locality (23°S). Surveys revealed habitat-specific, non-linear declines in ephemeral and corticated algae with increasing ALAN intensity on natural rocky platfo

Role of Urine Dipstick Screening in the Diagnosis of Pediatric Urinary Tract Infection in an Urban Referral Centre in Tamil Nadu, India.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most prevalent bacterial illness among children and a common cause of fever without an identifiable focus. Diagnosing UTI in children can be challenging, as their symptoms are nonspecific. Timely and accurate diagnosis is essential to prevent renal damage and reduce unnecessary interventions. Dipstick tests offered a rapid, non-invasive, and cost-effective alternative to urine culture, particularly in resource-limited settings. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of urine dipstick screening, specifically nitrit

Environmental drivers of sulfur dioxide variability in a tropical urban region: a state space modeling approach for Campo Grande, Brazil.

Understanding the temporal dynamics of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) in tropical urban environments is essential for evaluating air quality trends and supporting environmental management policies. This study investigates daily SO₂ variability in Campo Grande, Brazil, from 2003 to 2022, integrating meteorological information into a multivariate autoregressive state space (MARSS) model. SO₂ data were obtained from SISAM/INPE (based on the CAMS global reanalysis), and meteorological covariates (precipitation, air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed) were extracted from the MERRA-2 reanalysis.
