Cataracts after Ophthalmic and Nonophthalmic Trauma Exposure in Service Members, U.S. Armed Forces.

ABSTRACT: IntroductionWe aimed to identify injury-related risk factors for secondary cataract incidence after eye and brain injury and polytrauma. We also examined the effect of direct and indirect eye injury management on cataract diagnosis and treatment. Prevention or mitigation strategies require knowledge of the causes and types of combat injuries, which will enable more appropriate targeting of resources toward prevention and more efficient management of such injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were gathered from the Military Health System using the Military Health System Management an

ENG analysis of 150 cases of posterior fossa disease.

Analysis of the ENG records of 150 patients with well substantiated neurologic disease involving the structure of the posterior fossa revealed a high incidence of diminished optic fixation inhibition (DOFI) of caloric induced nystagmus. DOFI is defined as less than 50 percent decrease of speed of the slow phase when eyes are open and fixated. The whole group was subdivided into seven subgroups according to type and location of disease and the incidence of DOFI was found to vary significantly in the different subgroups. The highest incidence was found in the group of cerebellar mass lesions and

Visual tracking in monkeys: evidence for short-latency suppression of the vestibuloocular reflex.

1. Monkeys normally use a combination of smooth head and eye movements to keep the eyes pointed at a slowly moving object. The visual inputs from target motion evoke smooth pursuit eye movements, whereas the vestibular inputs from head motion evoke a vestibuloocular reflex (VOR). Our study asks how the eye movements of pursuit and the VOR interact. Is there a linear addition of independent commands for pursuit and the VOR? Or does the interaction of visual and vestibular stimuli cause momentary, "parametric" modulation of transmission through VOR pathways? 2. We probed for the state of the VOR

Research Prospects for mTOR in Neuroinflammation: A Bibliometric Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroinflammation is a key pathological process in neurological disorders, from acute injuries to chronic diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Parkinson's Disease (PD), and stroke. The mTOR pathway regulates neuroinflammation by influencing microglial activation, autophagy, and synaptic plasticity. To address the scarcity of systematic analyses in this growing field, our study employs bibliometric analysis to map the landscape, identify key themes and collaborations, and highlight therapeutic targets for future neurological research. METHODS: A Web of Science search retrie

Macrophage immunosenescence prolongs intraocular inflammation in aged mice via impaired induction of regulatory T cells.

Immune-mediated intraocular inflammation, called uveitis, is a leading cause of global blindness, with the highest burden of visual impairment falling on older individuals. Immunosenescence, the functional changes in immune cells with aging, impacts the age-associated immune response, but how immunosenescence and the molecular regulators of the age-associated immune response affect the clinical course of uveitis remains unclear. In the murine model of experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU), aged mice demonstrated a delayed onset and peak of intraocular inflammation compared to young mice. In co

Evaluating Interim Progression: First Posttherapy 177Lu-PSMA SPECT/CT Relative to Baseline PSMA PET/CT.

Prostate Cancer Working Group 4 recommends using prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET for response assessment of patients with androgen pathway receptor modulator-resistant prostate cancer treated with 177Lu-PSMA-617. For that purpose, the time interval between baseline PSMA PET and initiation of therapy is critical as interim disease progression may influence the performance of PET as a response assessment tool. Methods: We visually assessed the frequency of interim disease progression seen on the first posttherapy 177Lu-PSMA-617 SPECT/CT in 87 patients with androgen pathway receptor

scImmuneCo: a compendium of cell-type-specific functional modules for decoding immune responses from single-cell RNA-seq data.

Traditional, knowledge-driven pathway annotations and bulk transcriptomic analyses often fail to capture the cellular specificity and mechanistic heterogeneity of immune responses. We present scImmuneCo, a comprehensive resource of immune cell-specific co-expression modules derived from single-cell RNA sequencing across 17 immunological conditions and 1.78 million cells. Using a modified graph-based framework, we constructed 873 robust modules spanning 7 major immune cell types, providing stable, cell-type-specific interaction networks for functional inference. scImmuneCo resolves complex biol

Multi-omics insights into salinity tolerance in African bermudagrass.

African bermudagrass (Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) is a key parent species used to produce interspecific hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis). Due to the increasing use of non-potable water for landscape irrigation, salt stress has become a major concern in the turfgrass industry. While variation in salt tolerance is known within bermudagrass, the molecular basis of this trait is not well understood, particularly in African bermudagrass. In this study, we aimed to identify the molecular mechanisms associated with salt tolerance in African bermudagrass. The first-gen

Multidimensional transcriptomic analysis and in vitro experiments dissect the landscape of 2',2',4',4'-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether in bladder cancer progression.

2',2',4',4'-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), the most widespread congener of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, has attracted considerable attention due to its environmental persistence and extensive use. Although epidemiological data associate BDE-47 exposure with increased cancer risk, its role in bladder cancer (BC) remains insufficiently characterized. We found that BDE-47 at a physiologically relevant concentration (0.1 μM, comparable to human exposure levels) enhanced malignant phenotypes of BC cells in vitro. A total of 229 candidate genes were uncovered at both bulk and single-cell tran

The degenerome-a novel streamline-wise approach for white matter integrity in neurodegeneration.

Neurodegenerative diseases impair both gray matter and long-range white-matter pathways. Existing diffusion MRI approaches are either local or depend on predefined parcellations, limiting their ability to capture distributed network disruption. We introduce a streamline-wise framework to map axonal degeneration and derive disease-specific fiber "degeneromes" across Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). We analyzed diffusion microstructure imaging and T1-weighted MRI (3 T Siemens Prisma, 2018-2024) in AD (n =

Cavity Formation in Protein@Metal-Organic Frameworks Through Late-Stage Crystal Dissolution.

Proteins are increasingly used to guide the crystallization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), yielding protein@MOFs (p@MOFs) that encapsulate fragile biomacromolecules within stable crystalline hosts. These biohybrid materials offer tunable porosity and spatial organization that are difficult to achieve with conventional synthesis. Despite their growing importance, the mechanisms by which proteins influence MOF nucleation, crystal growth, and defect formation remain poorly understood. Here, we use a distributed electron microscopy approach to follow the full crystallization pathway of ferrit

Therapeutic potential of 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivative in EAE-induced optic neuritis.

Optic neuritis is a debilitating inflammatory condition of the optic nerve and is often an early manifestation of multiple sclerosis (MS). Optic nerve damage in MS causes visual impairment due to oxidative stress, inflammation, and demyelination. This study explores the effect of a potential oxadiazole derivative, 2-{[5-(2-chlorophenyl)-1, 3, 4-oxadiazol-2-yl] sulfanyl} ethan-1-ol (abbreviated as OX-2), on optic neuritis induced by using an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis model. The impact of the compound was analyzed through various methods, including clinical scoring, weight evalua

Exploring the impact of hAMSCs secretome on Panc1 cells via TNF-α/NF-κB (p50/p65)/Caspase 3 signaling pathways: An in vitro study.

The second most prevalent cause of mortality worldwide is cancer. Pancreatic cancer, known as the "king of cancers" due to its unfavorable prognosis and absence of symptoms, is among the fatal types of cancer. Despite the availability of various cancer therapy options, current strategies are often ineffective. Therefore, there is a constant need to explore novel platforms with low side effects and high efficacy. The application of stem cells or their derivatives in treating diseases including cancer, has become well-established. This study, focuses on investigating the effects of the secretome

Composition-Driven Structural Transitions and Thermodynamic Behaviors in CunAgm (m+n = 309) Nanoalloys from the Perspective of Atomic Simulations.

Molecular dynamics simulations with an embedded atom method were employed to systematically investigate the structural evolution and thermodynamic properties of CunAgm (m+n = 309) nanoalloys during cooling. Through comprehensive analysis of free energy, shape factor, pair distribution functions, entropy, and atomic packing visualizations, a detailed structural phase diagram was established for these magic-number nanoalloys. The results reveal that phase transformation pathways are strongly composition-dependent: nanoparticles with minimal or substantial Cu content predominantly form core-shell

Ketamine's brain spatial distribution and metabolic effects in a mouse model of anxiety: Insight into in situ mass spectrometry imaging and metabolomics methods.

Ketamine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, exhibits both therapeutic potential and abuse liability. However, the spatial distribution of ketamine across brain regions remains poorly characterized. Meanwhile, elucidating the mechanism underlying ketamine-induced psychiatric disorders through the investigation of metabolite alterations in the specific brain regions targeted by ketamine is of crucial significance. This study investigated the neurochemical effects of chronic ketamine administration in C57BL/6 mice using in situ mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) and metabolomics. M
