The analytic third: working with intersubjective clinical facts.

In this paper, two clinical sequences are presented in an effort to describe the methods by which the analyst attempts to recognise, understand and verbally symbolize for himself and the analysand the specific nature of the moment-to-moment interplay of the analyst's subjective experience, the subjective experience of the analysand and the intersubjectively-generated experience of the analytic pair (the experience of the analytic third). The first clinical discussion describes how the intersubjective experience created by the analytic pair becomes accessible to the analyst in part through the

Dermatological manifestations of hepatitis C.

Hepatitis C (HCV) infection is a leading cause of chronic liver disease in the United States. Certain dermatologic conditions are associated with HCV infection. Awareness of these conditions will facilitate better evaluation and management of patients by health care providers. Nurses can also increase awareness and understanding of HCV infection through patient education. These efforts may encourage earlier assessment and intervention.

Acute pancreatitis in children: Updates in epidemiology, diagnosis and management.

Acute pancreatitis (AP), manifesting as acute onset of abdominal pain, vomiting, and nausea, is increasingly being recognized in children secondary to increased awareness, more identifiable etiologies as well as advances in diagnostic capabilities, like imaging. Despite this increased awareness and ability for more frequent diagnoses, the natural history of AP remains poorly understood leading to gaps in approach and management, especially in children. Coupled with poor epidemiologic and management awareness, there remains a lack of understanding of the long term implications of severe acute p

Brief questions highlight the need for melanoma information campaigns.

Melanoma awareness was briefly assessed at walk/runs held simultaneously in Philadelphia PA, Phoenix AZ, and Seattle WA. Of the participants, 75 % (1521) answered short questions during event registration. Among 1,036 respondents aged 14 years and older, 66 % reported knowing melanoma warning signs. Significantly more respondents with melanoma family history reported having a physician-administered skin exam and knowing warning signs. More than one third of walk/run participants reported no definitive melanoma warning sign knowledge. Self-reported melanoma awareness and detection indices were

Global health surveillance.

Awareness of the importance of global health surveillance increased in the latter part of the 20th century with the global emergence of human immunodeficiency virus and novel strains of influenza. In the first decade of the 21st century, several events further highlighted global shared interests in and vulnerability to infectious diseases. Bioterrorist use of anthrax spores in 2001 raised awareness of the value of public health surveillance for national security. The epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003, re-emergence of a panzootic of avian influenza A H5N1 in 2005, and

The subtypes of developmental dyslexia in Chinese: evidence from three cases.

This study investigated subtypes of developmental dyslexia in Chinese by assessing three cases of Chinese dyslexic children. A battery of screening measures, a character naming and meaning task, and metalinguistic awareness tasks were administered to each child. One of the three children demonstrated characteristics of developmental surface dyslexia, and the other two showed characteristics of developmental deep dyslexia. Moreover, the children's reading problems were found to be specifically related to their deficits in metalinguistic awareness. The dissociation between developmental surface

Enhancing Rural Breast Cancer Screening Uptake: A Three-Arm Comparative Study of Outreach Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women, with a notably high mortality-to-incidence ratio, especially in rural areas. Limited awareness and inadequate access to healthcare are major contributors to the high breast cancer mortality rate in rural women, often resulting from insufficient screening, delayed diagnosis, and treatment. OBJECTIVES: This study is aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of three distinct intervention strategies-medical personnel-led education, breast health volunteers, and mobile screening mammography van visits-in improving breast cancer aware

Herpes zoster vaccination among older adults in urban China: A mixed-methods study in Shenzhen.

Herpes zoster (HZ) poses a growing burden in aging populations, yet uptake of herpes zoster vaccines (HZVs) remains limited in China. This mixed-methods study examined HZV willingness and barriers among older adults in Shenzhen. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among older adults (N = 1,974), and semi-structured interviews with older adults and healthcare providers (HCPs) (N = 30). Quantitative analyses used a multinomial outcome (unwilling, hesitant, willing), while qualitative data were thematically analyzed and integrated with survey results using a joint display. Findings revealed tha

Qualitative study to explore the perspectives and mental health experiences of first episode psychosis patients and their caregivers in North India.

BACKGROUND: The onset of psychosis brings unfamiliar experiences that can be disturbing for patients and their caregivers. Few studies from India (only one from North India) have examined these experiences from the perspective of the patient and caregiver. We explored experiences of first episode psychosis (FEP) patients and their caregivers within a North Indian context. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted in 2019 with ten FEP patients and their caregivers (total n=20) receiving out-patient care in a tertiary care centre. Topic guides focused on concerns/complaints, symptoms, h

Vaccine uptake in 20 countries in Europe 2020: Focus on tick-borne encephalitis (TBE).

Vaccination as a highly effective measure to protect against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) comes into new focus as known risk areas are expanding across Europe and Asia. Here we present an online household survey conducted in 20 European countries spanning endemic and non-endemic regions of TBE in 2020. With a comprehensive and standardized list of questions, this survey provided a unique opportunity to compare TBE/TBE vaccine awareness, TBE severity perception, vaccine uptake, vaccination completeness/compliance and motivators/barriers for vaccination across Europe. Among the 51,478 participa
