Skin indentation firmness and tissue dielectric constant assessed in face, neck, and arm skin of young healthy women.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to test the hypothesis that skin firmness correlates with skin hydration. METHODS: Dermal water was assessed by tissue dielectric constant (TDC) at 0.5 mm (TDC0.5 ) and 2.5 mm (TDC2.5 ) depths on four face sites and two arm sites of 35 women (25.0 ± 1.6 years). Firmness was determined by force (mN) to indent skin to 0.3 mm (F0.3 ) and 1.3 mm (F1.3 ). RESULTS: F0.3 was similar among face sites (avg = 16.2 ± 7.2 mN) but F1.3 varied (avg = 32.5 ± 4.1 mN). TDC2.5 was similar among face sites (avg = 37.7 ± 4.2) but TDC0.5 varied (avg = 36.2 ± 4.8). F1.3 of arm sites was simi

Non-invasive quantification of melanin in the stratum corneum: a novel indicator of skin lesions in pigmentation diseases.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Skin melanin content is an important indicator for ascertaining the pathology of skin pigmentation diseases, but its analysis necessitates a biopsy or other means of collecting tissue, posing a considerable burden to the patient, and making it difficult to observe how a given skin site changes over time. Here, we aimed to establish a non-invasive method for quantifying the eumelanin and pheomelanin content of the stratum corneum. METHODS: Sun-exposed and non-exposed samples from 10 healthy Japanese subjects were compared. We harvested the outermost layer of the stratum cor

Application of iodinated starch powder using an atomizer spray gun - a new and effective tool to evaluate hypohidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Hypohidrosis is defined as diminished sweating in response to an appropriate thermal or sympathetic stimulus. When encountered in a clinical setting, it necessitates an accurate documentation of its pattern and extent to prognosticate the risk of associated heat-related illnesses. This can be achieved by thermoregulatory sweat testing which includes a starch-iodine sweat test that can be administered via various methods. OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a novel method of using an atomizer spray gun in administering the starch-iodine test. METHOD
