BACKGROUND: The subject's inherent growth pattern can be an effective factor in characteristics of smile. More vertical growth in the posterior maxilla than in the anterior maxilla could result in a changed relationship between the occlusal plane and the curvature of the lower lip upon smile. In order to broaden the understanding of how smile gets affected by growth pattern and the underlying hard tissues, the present study was undertaken to compare smile in various growth patterns, to determine sexual dimorphism, if any; as well as to correlate smile with underlying hard tissues.

This case report describes the successful orthodontic tooth movement through the maxillary sinus in an adult patient. A 41-year-old Asian woman had severe lip protrusion and multiple missing posterior teeth. Her orthodontic treatment included the extraction of two teeth, maximum retraction of the incisors using the extraction spaces and the existing spaces from the missing molars, and closure of all remaining spaces. Even though the treatment time was extended because of the anatomic and biologic challenges associated with moving posterior teeth over a long distance through the maxillary sinus

INTRODUCTION: The craniofacial morphology of subjects with cleft lip and palate differs from that of subjects without clefts. Subjects with bilateral cleft lip and palate tend to have maxillary retrognathism, a smaller mandible with an obtuse gonial angle, greater anterior upper and lower facial heights, and retroclined maxillary incisors. The purposes of this research were to compare the skeletal and upper-airway features of subjects with bilateral cleft lip and palate with the same features in control subjects without clefts and to determine the growth-related changes at different growth sta

Cleft lip and palate is a common congenital malformation with a prevalence of 1:600 newborns. Children with orofacial clefts are treated by an interdisciplinary team of specialists while parents and child play a key role in their own care process. The orthodontic and facial orthopedic treatment of a child with a cleft takes many years. Children often get bored of the long treatment and this can cause problems with compliance and oral hygiene. Therefore it is advisable to distinguish 5 well-defined stages in the orthodontic treatment and to attempt to have some 'orthodontics free' time in betwe

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare genetic condition that affects approximately 1 in every 20,000 - 50,000 live births. WBS children have specific skeletal deformities, dental malformations and rare lingual muscle dysfunction. The need for orthodontic and orthognathic therapy has arisen and has been considered a real clinical challenge even for experienced professionals, once it requires a complex and individualized treatment plan. This study reports a case of orthopedic expansion of the maxilla, in which a modified facial mask was used for protraction of the maxillary complex associated

INTRODUCTION: Treacher Collins syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by several orofacial findings including malar deficiency and hypoplastic mandibles. These patients often require a combined orthodontic-orthognathic approach to correct their malocclusion. This is most often characterized by a short posterior vertical height and an anterior open bite. Orthognathic correction often requires Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies. No long-term stability results have been reported after bimaxillary surgery in Treacher Collins patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all Trea

OBJECTIVE: Māori patients are often inappropriately treated using Caucasian norms, despite obvious differences in facial morphology. There is currently very little data concerning the nature and/or magnitude of these differences in facial features. The objective of the present study was therefore to evaluate the facial features of Māori and New Zealand (NZ) Europeans.
METHODS: Two convenience samples of 30 Māori and 30 NZ Europeans, evenly matched for age and gender, were recruited from amongst students of the University of Otago, New Zealand. Using a 3D white-light scanner, 12 facial scans w

After orthognathic surgery the forehead remains unchanged. To produce facial harmony, the planned projection of the maxillomandibular complex must be placed in the correct relations to the unchanged position of the forehead. We have compared the anterior soft tissue projection of the maxillomandibular complex relative to the forehead after Le Fort I advancement surgery for correction of maxillary hypoplasia with that of a local reference group chosen by lay assessors. We retrospectively studied 32 patients (16 men and 16 women) all of whom had previously been treated by Le Fort I maxillary adv

The aim of this clinical trial was to compare the hard- and soft-tissue effects of 15 month full-time functional appliance therapy with Twin Block (TB) and Dynamax (Dx) appliances. The effects on both hard and soft tissue were analysed using cephalograms and three-dimensional optical surface laser scans. One hundred and three subjects with a class II division 1 malocclusion, and a minimum overjet of 7mm were available for analysis following stratified randomization according to gender and age. Data was collected at the start of treatment, 15 month therapy, and after 3 month post-treatment obse

OBJECTIVES: During a cone beam CT scan, the patient is in an upright or supine position. This position depends on the brand and type of the scanner. The aims of this study are: (1) to investigate if the head position has an effect on cephalometric evaluation of the soft-tissue facial profile, comparing the recordings in natural head position (NHP) and supine head position (SHP) and (2) to investigate if age, gender and body mass index (BMI) are contributing factors to the effect of the head position.
METHODS: 90 subjects were photographed in profile both in NHP and in SHP. 12 soft-tissue angu

This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between the transverse displacement of the proximal segment after bilateral sagittal osteotomy for mandibular setback and the amount and design of the mandibular setback. Patients who underwent either bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) alone or two-jaw surgery were selected, and cephalographic postero-anterior (PA) measurements were taken pre-operatively (T1), immediately post-operatively (T2), and at follow-up (T3). The inter-gonal (IG) and inter-ramal (IR) width increased immediately after surgery, but decreased to the initial value

Sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) benefits patients through the wide bone contact between the proximal and distal segment, which contributes to postoperative stability. Recently, a posterior bending osteotomy (PBO), an additional vertical osteotomy performed posterior to the second molar after SSRO, has been introduced to avoid positional changes of the condyle from bony interference in patients with facial asymmetry, which leads to decreases in bone contact. The aim of this study was to investigate postoperative stability after SSRO with PBO. Forty patients with facial asymmetry were enro
