Oxygen Saturation and Hemoglobin Level in the Muscles of Hypertensive Patients during Exercise in Water.

To clarify whether exercise therapy in a water environment is appropriate therapy for hypertensive patients, we investigated oxygen saturation and hemoglobin level in the vastus medialis muscle using a laser tissue blood oxygen monitor. Seven hypertensive patients (52 to 77 years of age, hypertensive group) and five healthy volunteers (44 to 69 years of aged, control group) participated in this study. Subjects maintained resting postures for about 5 minutes each in a standing position, a sitting position on a chair, a lying position out of water, and a position in water below the navel and to

Cardiovascular Exercise Drives Neuroprotection in a Mouse Model of Spinocerebellar Ataxia 1 Via Rescue of Aberrant Splicing.

OBJECTIVE: Spinocerebellar ataxia 1 (SCA1) is a fatal hereditary neurodegenerative disorder with no approved therapies, and gene-targeting strategies have thus far failed in clinical trials. Exercise remains the only intervention shown to provide clinical benefit in patients with spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs), yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. METHODS: Using the Atxn1154Q/2Q knock-in mouse model, we implemented a prolonged voluntary wheel-running paradigm from 4 to 16 weeks of age. Mice were then phenotyped using motor and cognitive behavioral assays. Following euthanas

Cognitive and Physical Intervention in Metals' Dysfunction and Neurodegeneration.

Metals-especially iron, copper and manganese-are important elements of brain functions and development. Metal-dysregulation homeostasis is associated with brain-structure damage to the motor, cognitive and emotional systems, and leads to neurodegenerative processes. There is more and more evidence that specialized cognitive and motor exercises can enhance brain function and attenuate neurodegeneration in mechanisms, such as improving neuroplasticity by altering the synaptic structure and function in many brain regions. Psychological and physical methods of rehabilitation are now becoming incre

REVIVE-HF: rehabilitation with immersive virtual reality and exercise in hospitalized patients with heart failure-a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is a chronic condition characterized by significant functional limitations, with exercise intolerance as a major determinant of reduced quality of life. Supervised aerobic exercise is a core intervention in cardiac rehabilitation, yet adherence and tolerance may be hindered by physical and motivational factors. Immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR) have shown potential to increase engagement and positive perceptions during exercise. This study aims to evaluate the influence of VR on tolerance to cycle-ergometer aerobic exercise in hospitalized patie

Long-term home oxygen therapy.

Oxygen therapy improves mortality and morbidity in hypoxemic patients with COPD. For best results, oxygen should be administered continuously. The general guidelines that qualify a patient for long-term home oxygen therapy are rather explicit, although there are some gray areas, such as increasing exercise performance in normoxemic COPD patients and the treatment of dyspnea in certain patients. The physiologic goals of oxygen therapy are to reverse or prevent tissue hypoxia under the various conditions of life. Patients often experience a fall in oxygen saturation during REM sleep and during e

In-hospital moderate intensity interval training following surgical resection of foregut malignancy - a prospective single arm feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical resections of foregut malignancy are generally procedures with substantial morbidity and mortality. The use of exercise therapy has resulted in improvements in outcomes in many parts of the cancer treatment pathway and thus has become a standard addition to oncology and surgical oncology paradigms including during chemotherapy and as prehabilitation and rehabilitation for surgery. Guided in-hospital interval training as post-surgical therapy has not been evaluated as a treatment tool. If safe and acceptable to patients, this has the potential to improve surgical outcomes.
