STUDY OBJECTIVES: Microbial antigens can elicit an immune response leading to the production of autoantibodies cross-reacting with autoantigens. Still, their clinical significance in human sera in the context of brain diseases is unclear. Therefore, assessment of natural autoantibodies reacting with their neuropeptides may elucidate the autoimmune etiology of central hypersomnias. The study aims to determine whether serum autoantibody levels differ in patients with different types of central hypersomnias (narcolepsy type 1 and 2, NT1 and NT2; idiopathic hypersomnia, IH) and healthy controls an

INTRODUCTION: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are novel therapeutic strategies in cancer treatment, promoting anti-tumor response by boosting cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Despite their high effectiveness, they can trigger the activation of diverse autoimmune diseases in genetically predisposed individuals. New-onset autoimmune diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1D) is an extremely unusual side effect, described in less than 1% of patients.
CASE REPORT: Here we present a 44-year-old male diagnosed with non-surgical hepatocarcinoma, developing programmed death ligand-1 inhibitor-induced autoimmune endoc

PURPOSE: Anti-CD20 therapy delays type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) progression in both nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice and new-onset patients. The mechanism is not completely defined. This study aimed to investigate the effects of anti-CD20 therapy on T helper 17 (Th17) cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs) in NOD mice. The role of B cell depletion in T1DM development was also examined.
METHODS: NOD mice were randomly divided into two groups. The mice in the experimental group were treated with an anti-CD20 antibody, while the control mice were treated with an isotype-matched control antibody. Aft

Importance: Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) refers to a group of neuropsychiatric conditions associated with specific circulating autoantibodies directed against synaptic receptors, neuronal cell surface proteins, and intracellular targets. Increased recognition of these disorders is of value, as affected patients prominently display cognitive impairment, behavioral disturbances, and seizures requiring multidisciplinary teams, with early recognition often impacting prognosis. Observations: This case series is based on a retrospective record review of adult patients diagnosed with AE between Janua

Currently, islet autoantibodies (IAbs) constitute the most reliable marker for detecting the autoimmune process of type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, there are no appropriate reference intervals (RIs) to interpret the results of IAbs in China. In this study, we aimed to establish the RIs of four common IAbs based on the Han Chinese population and evaluate their clinical diagnostic values in patients with T1D. We collected 177 blood samples from healthy volunteers to detect the levels of IAbs directed against insulin (IAA), glutamic acid decarboxylase-65 (GADA), insulinoma antigen 2 (IA-2A), and z

The glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 antibody (GAD65-Ab) is an autoimmune marker in some diseases such as diabetes or autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system such as stiff-man syndrome. It can appear with other pancreatic autoantibodies, such as insulin autoantibodies (IAA), presenting as early signs of pancreatic islet β-cells impairing, and play roles in the pathogenesis of type1 diabetes (T1D) and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). Positive GAD65-Ab is rarely observed in insulin-dependent diabetic patients with other acquired autoimmune diseases, such as Sjogren's syndrom

Many evidences indicated that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play pathogenic roles in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Peptidylarginine deiminases 4 (PAD4) has been proved to be indispensable for generation of NETs. In the current study, we investigated whether oral administration of cl-amidine, an effective inhibitor of PAD4, protects non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice from T1D development. Female NOD mice were orally administrated with cl-amidine (5 μg/g body weight) from the age of 8 weeks up to 16 weeks. It showed that cl-amidine inhibit NET formation in vitro and in vivo. The onset of T1D was del

OBJECTIVES: Human leukocyte antigen-DP beta 1 (HLA-DPB1) with a glutamic acid at the 69th position of the ß chain (E69) genotype and inhalational beryllium exposure individually contribute to risk of chronic beryllium disease (CBD) and beryllium sensitisation (BeS) in exposed individuals. This retrospective nested case-control study assessed the contribution of genetics and exposure in the development of BeS and CBD.
METHODS: Workers with BeS (n=444), CBD (n=449) and beryllium-exposed controls (n=890) were enrolled from studies conducted at nuclear weapons and primary beryllium manufacturing

Musicogenic epilepsy (ME), a peculiar form of reflex epilepsy, represents a neurological rarity and yet another demonstration of the extraordinary power of music on the human brain. Despite the heterogeneity of the reported musical triggers, patients' emotional response to music is thought to play a crucial role in provoking seizures. Accordingly, the mesial temporal structures (especially of the non-dominant hemisphere) appear most involved in seizure generation, although a more complex fronto-temporal epileptogenic network was documented in some cases. Autoimmune encephalitis has been recent

BACKGROUND: Macrosomia and child obesity are growing health-care issues worldwide. The purpose of the study was to evaluate how extremely high or low birth weight affects metabolic markers evaluated in newborn screening.
METHODS: The study was register-based and included full-term singletons born in Iceland from 2009 to 2012 with newborn screening samples taken 72-96 h after birth. Three groups based on birth weight were compared: low birth weight (<2500 g), appropriate-for-gestational age, and extreme macrosomia (≥5000 g). The comparison was adjusted for possible confounding factors.
