Findings from Optometrists' Practices in Advising about Lifestyle Study.

SIGNIFICANCE: Lifestyle influences eye health and other chronic diseases. All health care providers, not just primary care physicians, should have the necessary information and training to advise and refer patients on lifestyle to take advantage of opportunities to provide such advice. PURPOSE: The extent to which optometrists offer lifestyle advice to their patients is largely unknown. The Optometrists' Practices in Advising about Lifestyle (OPAL) study aimed to examine lifestyle advice that optometrists offer, to whom such advice is offered, and reasons for not offering this advice. METHOD

Youth-Adult Connectedness:: A Key Protective Factor for Adolescent Health.

Over the past 30 years, prevention science in the adolescent health field has moved from interventions focused on preventing single problem behaviors to efforts employing a dual approach, addressing risk factors that predict problems while simultaneously nurturing protective factors and promoting positive development. Through an examination of previous research and empirical case examples with vulnerable youth, this article considers the hypothesis that adolescents' sense of connectedness to caring adults acts as a protective factor against a range of risk behaviors. Multivariate analyses with

Using Positive Deviance to Understand the Uptake of Optimal Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices by Mothers in an Urban Slum of Mumbai.

Objectives Positive deviance research seeks out well-nourished children living in disadvantaged contexts to understand local growth-promoting behaviors. This study explored the factors that influence the uptake of infant and young child feeding behaviors among mothers. Methods Children with a height-for-age z-score (HAZ) > 0 (n = 10) or a HAZ < -2.0 (n = 12) were purposefully selected from households enrolled in a community management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) program in an urban slum of Mumbai, India. Qualitative methods were employed by means of semi-structured key informant interviews wi

Adolescent perspectives on the barriers and facilitators of engagement in healthy lifestyle behaviours: a focus group study from the European SEEDS project.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent obesity is increasing worldwide, and a minority of adolescents are meeting recommended physical activity (PA) and dietary guidelines, particularly among adolescents from low socioeconomic areas. There are limited studies qualitatively investigating the engagement in healthy lifestyle behaviours in this population. Therefore, this study aimed to gain a greater understanding of perceived barriers and facilitators of healthy lifestyle behaviours, specifically PA and dietary behaviours, in this under-represented population. METHODS: Eight semistructured qualitative focus gr

Sexual Function in 16- to 21-Year-Olds in Britain.

PURPOSE: Concern about young people's sexuality is focused on the need to prevent harmful outcomes such as sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy. Although the benefit of a broader perspective is recognized, data on other aspects of sexuality, particularly sexual function, are scant. We sought to address this gap by measuring the population prevalence of sexual function problems, help seeking, and avoidance of sex in young people. METHODS: A cross-sectional stratified probability sample survey (Natsal-3) of 15,162 women and men in Britain (response rate: 57.7%), using compute

Factors related to seroconversion among homo- and bisexual men after attending a risk-reduction educational session.

Thirteen homosexual men, volunteers in a study of the natural history of HIV, who seroconverted to HIV after participating in an educational program on HIV prevention, were interviewed about the circumstances leading to their seroconversion. Six men had participated in unprotected anal intercourse with at least one partner whom they believed was HIV-negative. Four men attributed their conversion to mental health problems or to drug and alcohol use. Two men's seroconversions could not be ascertained and one man attributed seroconversion to a condom break. Most men who had learned how to avoid i

The case for more active policy attention to health promotion.

Until recently, when anthrax triggered a concern about preparedness in the public health infrastructure, U.S. health policy and health spending had been dominated by a focus on payment for medical treatment. The fact that many of the conditions driving the need for treatment are preventable ought to draw attention to policy opportunities for promoting health. Following a brief review of the determinants of population health-genetic predispositions, social circumstances, environmental conditions, behavioral patterns, and medical care-this paper explores some of the factors inhibiting policy att

Understanding clustered behavioral risk factors among adults in the United States: A gender-specific analysis of alcohol and other substance use and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who consume alcohol often use other drugs as well. Little is known about the clustering of heavy and binge drinking with the use of other substances (tobacco, cannabis, illicit drugs, and nonmedical prescription drugs). Overweight/obesity, highly prevalent in the United States (US) and an established health risk factor, may also cluster with them. We aimed to identify patterns of clustering of these behavioral risk factors and demographic and chronic disease profiles of individuals who show each pattern of clustering. METHODS: Latent class analyses and multinomial and

COVID-19 Adaptations in the Care of Patients with Opioid Use Disorder: a Survey of California Primary Care Clinics.

BACKGROUND: With the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, many federal agencies relaxed policies regulating opioid use disorder treatment. The impact of these changes has been minimally documented. The abrupt nature of these shifts provides a naturalistic opportunity to examine adaptations for opioid use disorder treatment in primary care. OBJECTIVE: To examine change in medical and behavioral health appointment frequency, visit type, and management of patients with opioid use disorder in response to COVID-19. DESIGN: A 14-item survey queried primary care practices that were enrolled in a medicatio

Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities Among Rural Adults - United States, 2012-2015.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Rural communities often have worse health outcomes, have less access to care, and are less diverse than urban communities. Much of the research on rural health disparities examines disparities between rural and urban communities, with fewer studies on disparities within rural communities. This report provides an overview of racial/ethnic health disparities for selected indicators in rural areas of the United States. REPORTING PERIOD: 2012-2015. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: Self-reported data from the 2012-2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were pooled to evaluate ra

Intergenerational Associations of Parent Adverse Childhood Experiences and Child Health Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) robustly predict future morbidity and mortality. Researchers are just beginning to investigate intergenerational effects. We hypothesize there are intergenerational associations between parent ACE exposure and worse child health, health behaviors, and health care access and use. METHODS: We linked data from 2 population-based cross-sectional telephone surveys in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that were used to ask parents about their past exposure to ACEs and their child's health, respectively. Participants were 350 parent-child dyads. Logistic re

Support After Adolescent Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment During the Transition Into Emerging Adulthood: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a chronic disease requiring long-term treatment, yet current treatment models do not align with the chronicity of obesity. Current guidelines provide limited direction on how to adapt treatment to support weight loss maintenance as adolescents transition into emerging adulthood, a distinct developmental period from the late teens to the mid-to-late twenties. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aims to (1) better understand adolescents' and their parents' experiences after behavioral weight-loss treatment as they navigate the transition from late adolescence into emerging

Medical mistrust in the context of Ebola: Implications for intended care-seeking and quarantine policy support in the United States.

This investigation explores Ebola conspiracy beliefs, a form of medical mistrust, and their potential impact on health behavior. Results of an online survey in the United States in December 2014 demonstrated that 16 percent of 202 participants held conspiracy beliefs. Participants who were less knowledgeable about Ebola, more mistrustful of medical organizations, and more xenophobic more strongly endorsed conspiracy beliefs. Participants who more strongly endorsed conspiracy beliefs reported that they would be less likely to seek care for Ebola and were less supportive of quarantining people r

Genomic analysis reveals potential involvement of the brain-retina axis in regulating chicken feeding behavior.

Feeding behavior is a fundamental biological process closely linked to development, growth, metabolism, and immune regulation in animals. In livestock production, it serves as both an indicator of health status and a selection criterion for breeding programs aimed at improving feed efficiency and adaptive behavior. However, the genetic basis and regulatory mechanisms governing these traits remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the genomic architecture of feeding behavior in 205 slow-growing yellow broilers using whole-genome sequencing and high-resolution behavioral phenotyp

Determinants of intrauterine device use among reproductive-age women in a province implementing Islamic Sharia law in Indonesia: An application of the theory of planned behavior.

The utilization of the intrauterine device (IUD) in Indonesia remains low at 3.9%, despite its high effectiveness (99.4%) and designation as a national family planning priority, suggesting the presence of psychosocial barriers influencing contraceptive behavior among women of reproductive age. This study aimed to analyze psychosocial factors influencing IUD use behavior based on the theory of planned behavior, including attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, actual behavioral control, and intention, in Banda Aceh-the only province in Indonesia implementing holistic Sharia l

Dietary behavior patterns and short-term pace of aging-evidence from a Chinese cohort.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy dietary behaviors have been associated with increased risks of mortality and chronic diseases, yet mortality is a distal endpoint that requires long-term follow-up and is therefore poorly suited for short-term evaluation. Aging, which lies upstream of mortality and is modifiable by lifestyle factors, may serve as a meaningful early intermediate outcome. However, evidence linking dietary behavior patterns to short-term changes in the pace of biological aging remains limited. Therefore, we conducted this study to examine the associations between dietary behavior patterns an

Associations of sleeping, sedentary and physical activity with phenotypic age acceleration: a cross-sectional isotemporal substitution model.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity was believed to be associated with reduced aging among adults, while the competing nature of the physical activity and sedentary behavior has mainly been neglected in studies. We aimed to estimate the association of sleeping, sedentary behavior, and physical activity with aging among adults, considering the competing nature between variables of activity status. METHODS: A total of 5288 participants who were 20 years or older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were involved.
