Corticomotor correlates of somatosensory reaction time and variability in individuals with post concussion symptoms.

Persistent post concussion symptoms (PPCS) describe the condition when an individual experiences chronic symptoms, particularly fatigue, beyond the expected time of recovery. The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of fatigue and related ongoing symptoms on somatosensory and corticomotor pathways using reaction time (RT) testing, and single-pulse and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Eighty-three participants (nine female, mean age 37.9 ± 11.5 years) were divided into two groups (persistent symptoms versus asymptomatic) following self-report based upon previously p

Medicine use during acute and chronic postinjury periods in whiplash-injured individuals.

Medicine use as part of multimodal management for whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) is common: neck pain is the cardinal symptom, mental health conditions are common, and some individuals may have neurological signs and symptoms. Almost half of the individuals with WAD have ongoing pain and disability. However, medicine use during acute and chronic recovery periods for WAD management is unknown. We analysed medicine use during acute (<12 weeks) and chronic (12 weeks to 2 years) postinjury periods in adults claiming compensation for WAD in the no-fault jurisdiction of Victoria, Australia (n =

DNA variants are an unlikely explanation for the changing quality of spermatozoa within the same individual.

It has recently been suggested that the human sperm genome is highly unstable, which may be a reasonable explanation as to why men, even fertile men, produce defective spermatozoa. Furthermore, an unstable genome may also explain why the semen profile of the same man changes from one ejaculate to the next. As such, we took multiple ejaculates (between 3 and 6) from 7 individuals over a 6-month period and isolated sperm through density gradients. We then compared the DNA of: (i) good and poor-quality spermatozoa within the same ejaculate; and (ii) from multiple ejaculates from the same individu

Pain in individuals with RASopathies: Prevalence and clinical characterization in a sample of 80 affected patients.

Pain in individuals with RASopathies is a neglected topic in literature. In this article, we assessed prevalence and profile of pain in a sample of 80 individuals affected by RASopathies. The study sample included individuals with Noonan syndrome (N = 42), Costello syndrome (N = 17), and cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome (N = 21). A set of standardized questionnaires and scales were administered (VAS/numeric scale, r-FLACC, Wang-Baker scale, NPSI, BPI, NCCPC-R) to detect and characterize acute and chronic pain and to study the influence of pain on quality of life (PEDs-QL, SF-36) and sleeping pa

Interrater and intrarater reliability of ventilatory thresholds determined in individuals with spinal cord injury.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. OBJECTIVES: Individualized training regimes are often based on ventilatory thresholds (VTs). The objectives were to study: (1) whether VTs during arm ergometry could be determined in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), (2) the intrarater and interrater reliability of VT determination. SETTING: University research laboratory. METHODS: Thirty graded arm crank ergometry exercise tests with 1-min increments of recreationally active individuals (tetraplegia (N = 11), paraplegia (N = 19)) were assessed. Two sports physicians assessed all tests blinded, random

"I's" on the prize: A systematic review of individual differences in Contingency Management treatment response.

Contingency Management is an evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders with strong potential for measurement-based customization. Previous work has examined individual difference factors in Contingency Management treatment response of potential relevance to treatment targeting and adaptive implementation; however, a systematic review of such factors has not yet been conducted. Here, we summarize and evaluate the existing literature on patient-level predictors, mediators, and moderators of Contingency Management treatment response in stimulant and/or opioid using outpatients - clinic

Reduced sperm telomere length in individuals with varicocele is associated with reduced genomic integrity.

Varicocele, defined as enlarged varicose veins in the scrotum, is the most common identifiable cause of male infertility. There are significant correlations between oxidative stress and varicocele-related infertility due to testicular hyperthermia, which can result in low sperm function. In addition, recent excessive oxidative stress can affect sperm telomere length and integrity of sperm DNA. Therefore, we assessed sperm telomere length as a potential marker of paternal genome integrity and leukocyte telomere length as an internal control (real-time PCR), along with sperm chromatin status (TU

Differentiating Individuals Convicted of Sexual Offenses: A Two-Country Latent Class Analysis.

Sexual offenses are often part of a larger criminal career also encompassing nonsexual crimes. However, most sexual offending typologies focus on an individual's most recent sexual offense. We compare data from Belgian and Dutch national conviction cohorts and use latent class analysis to distinguish groups of individuals based on their history of sexual and nonsexual offenses, considering continuity and variety. The resulting classification is compared between individuals convicted of sexual offenses and individuals convicted of nonsexual offenses. Results show that four latent classes can be

A population pharmacokinetic model of intravenous telavancin in healthy individuals to assess tissue exposure.

Non-compartmental analysis of telavancin microdialysis data indicated a sustained exposure in soft tissues and that unbound plasma concentrations were underestimated in vitro. The objective of the present evaluation was to develop a population pharmacokinetic model of telavancin to describe its plasma protein binding, its distribution into muscle, and subcutaneous tissue and to predict pharmacokinetic/-dynamic target attainment (PTA). Total plasma concentrations and microdialysate concentrations (plasma, subcutaneous, and muscle tissue) were available up to 24 h (plasma microdialysate, up to 8

Fentanyl exposure and preferences among individuals starting treatment for opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Fentanyl has become widespread in the illicit opioid supply, and is a major driver of overdose mortality. METHODS: This study used a medical records review at a community opioid use disorder treatment program to examine patient-level correlates of fentanyl exposure as measured by urine testing at admission (N= 1,174). Additionally, an anonymous survey was conducted with 114 patients about their experiences and preferences regarding fentanyl. RESULTS: Overall, 39% of patients entering treatment tested positive for fentanyl. Prevalence of fentanyl exposure differed based on other d

Individual differences in human opioid abuse potential as observed in a human laboratory study.

BACKGROUND: Opioids have high abuse potential and pose a major public health concern. Yet, a large percentage of individuals exposed to opioids do not develop problematic use. Individual differences in opioid abuse potential are not well understood. METHODS: This within-subject (N = 16), double-blind, double-dummy, human laboratory study evaluated individual differences in response to dose (placebo, low, medium, high) following administration of heroin and hydromorphone through intravenous and subcutaneous routes, in opioid-experienced but non physically-dependent participants. Outcomes were

Individual Radiosensitivity Assessment of the Families of Ataxia-Telangiectasia Patients by G2-Checkpoint Abrogation.

OBJECTIVES: Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder characterised by cerebellar degeneration, telangiectasia, radiation sensitivity, immunodeficiency, oxidative stress and cancer susceptibility. Epidemiological research has shown that carriers of the heterozygous ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene mutation are radiosensitive to ionising irradiation and have a higher risk of cancers, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. However, there is currently no fast and reliable laboratory-based method to detect heterozygous ATM carriers for family screening and pl

Household socio-economic position and individual infectious disease risk in rural Kenya.

The importance of household socio-economic position (SEP) in shaping individual infectious disease risk is increasingly recognised, particularly in low income settings. However, few studies have measured the extent to which this association is consistent for the range of pathogens that are typically endemic among the rural poor in the tropics. This cross-sectional study assessed the relationship between SEP and human infection within a single community in western Kenya using a set of pathogens with diverse transmission routes. The relationships between household SEP and individual infection wi

EEG Reactivity Predicts Individual Efficacy of Vagal Nerve Stimulation in Intractable Epileptics.

Background: Chronic vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) is a well-established non-pharmacological treatment option for drug-resistant epilepsy. This study sought to develop a statistical model for prediction of VNS efficacy. We hypothesized that reactivity of the electroencephalogram (EEG) to external stimuli measured during routine preoperative evaluation differs between VNS responders and non-responders. Materials and Methods: Power spectral analyses were computed retrospectively on pre-operative EEG recordings from 60 epileptic patients with VNS. Thirty five responders and 25 non-responders were

Retrospective biodosimetry techniques: Focus on cytogenetics assays for individuals exposed to ionizing radiation.

In the absence of physical data, biodosimetry tools are required for fast dose and risk assessment in the event of radiological or nuclear mass accidents or attacks to triage exposed humans and take immediate medical countermeasures. Biodosimetry tools have mostly been developed for retrospective dose assessment and the follow-up of victims of irradiation. Among them, cytogenetics analyses, to reveal chromosome damage, are the most developed and allow the determination of doses from blood samples as low as 100 mGy. Various cytogenetic tests have already allowed retrospective dose assessment of
