Neonatal Macular Hemorrhage in a Term Healthy Infant: 18-Year Follow-up.

Unobstructed binocular vision is required during the critical period of vision development to obtain optimal visual acuity in each eye and binocular stereopsis. In this article, we report 18-year follow-up of a full-term, otherwise healthy infant noted to have dense premacular hemorrhage occluding the visual axis in the left eye on retinal imaging performed 48 hours after birth. Serial examinations by the retina service were performed weekly for 10 weeks as the hemorrhage resolved spontaneously. Shortly thereafter, visual acuity revealed fixation was present, but the mother noted intermittent

Serendipitous Discovery of Lipemia Retinalis in a Premature Infant: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Lipemia retinalis (LR) is a rare ocular condition characterized by a creamy white appearance of the retinal vessels, which is indicative of significantly elevated serum triglyceride (TG) levels. This condition is particularly noteworthy in pediatric populations, especially in preterm infants who are at risk for various metabolic disorders. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of LR in a 44-day-old preterm infant identified during routine retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening. Unusual retinal findings led to metabolic investigations, revealing elevated TG levels confirming LR

Effects of TMEM232 Variant on Infant Atopic Dermatitis According to Maternal Factors.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is caused by interactions between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Transmembrane protein 232 (TMEM232) is one of the genes strongly implicated in AD. Methods: In the present study, we aimed to investigate the association between AD with variants within TMEM232 based on maternal factors, including a history of allergic diseases, and sensitization to Der f. We performed a candidate gene association study involving the Cohort for Childhood Origins of Asthma and Allergic Diseases. Results: A single variant of the TMEM232 gene, rs17132261, was fou

A longitudinal examination of contributors to new parents' perception of their infant.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have examined contributors to personal growth (PG) following the birth of the first child. This study examines for the first time the role of PG as a potential mediator in the relationship between individual characteristics (bond with parents and experiences of parental loss) and parental perception of their infant (warmth, invasiveness). By focusing on PG, this study offers a novel perspective on how parental experiences and relationships influence early parent-child dynamics over time. METHODS: We used data from a longitudinal study among new Israeli parents. Pa

Factors Involved in Posttraumatic Growth in Mothers Experiencing Fetal and Infant Death.

Factors associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG) are investigated in mothers who have suffered fetal or infant death. Mothers (N = 66) completed the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI; Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996), the Core Beliefs Inventory (CBI; Cann et al., 2010), and answered questions about the severity of their loss, age of fetus or infant, time since loss, social support, finding meaning, and involvement in loss-related behavior. Results indicate a greatly traumatic loss (M = 4.41), a great degree of core belief disruption (M = 3.57), and a moderate level of PTG (M = 2.80). CBI scores

Management of neonatal and infant aortic thrombosis: A single-center case series.

Neonatal and infant aortic thrombosis is a rare albeit life-threatening thrombotic event, particularly seen in premature infants with an arterial catheter in place. We describe our institutional experience and approach to the management of 11 infants with occlusive or nearly occlusive aortic thrombosis. We observed at least partial thrombus resolution in all patients. Complications related to our management included minor bleeding in two children receiving thrombolytic therapy, and two major bleeding events in children receiving anticoagulation alone. Our experience adds to the growing body of

The role of bodily experiences during pregnancy on mother and infant outcomes.

Pregnancy is a transformative time for women and their bodies, and therefore thoughts and feelings and about one's own body and internal bodily sensations may understandably change during this period. Body satisfaction and interoception have been found to influence factors such as antenatal attachment (AA) and maternal mental health. However, mixed results in the literature suggest complex relationships between the bodily experience during pregnancy and outcomes, necessitating a broader investigative approach. We aim to examine the relationship between the pregnancy bodily experience and multi

Fluorinated liquid-crystal monomers in infant formulas and implication for health risk.

Fluorinated liquid-crystal monomers (FLCMs), a new class of potential persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) emerging pollutants, are extensively utilized in the display panel of various electronic devices. These compounds have been found in various environmental matrixes and dietary. Our previous studies have documented their ubiquitous occurrence in high fat foodstuffs. Infants, a vulnerable group, are more susceptible to the impacts of these pollutants compared to adults. Herein, we provided an assessment of the health risks posed by FLCMs to infants, focusing on their exposure through

Mommy's microbes: Gestational diabetes mellitus shapes the maternal and infant gut microbiome.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with increased risk of metabolic and neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Wang et al. provide evidence that changes in the gut microbiome of mothers with GDM may lead to dysbiosis in their infants and altered development in a sex-dependent manner.

Infant feeding for women with an eating disorder: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Mothers with eating disorders can face additional challenges with infant feeding, and there is evidence they are likely to cease breastfeeding earlier than intended. However, there is little research exploring this. The present study used interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the lived experience of infant feeding for mothers suffering from or recovering from an eating disorder. Semistructured interviews were conducted with six women-five who had breastfed and one who formula-fed. The women experienced two incompatible worlds-motherhood and an eating disorder. Tensions were somet

Care of an infant born with a cleft palate: a case study.

Orofacial clefts are the most common facial congenital abnormalities in humans. Their management is complex due to a range of immediate and ongoing challenges. These include breathing, feeding, speech, hearing and dental issues. This article uses a case study approach to outline these challenges for a patient who was born with a cleft palate. The case is followed by a discussion of contemporary evidence-based care. The article focuses on family-centred care and multidisciplinary teamwork, and the author also details the central role of the children's nurse.

Addressing Infant and Young Child Feeding Recommendations From a Planetary Health Perspective.

Current international infant and young child (IYC) feeding recommendations consider nutrition and health but not environmental impacts. Only a handful of countries have dietary guidelines that provide quantitative recommendations for food groups of environmental concern. This study aimed to perform a narrative review of the environmental impacts of commercial milk formula compared with breastfeeding and to analyze the degree to which current country-specific IYC feeding recommendations are aligned with sustainable dietary targets. A mixed-methods review was conducted, including the following:

Lamotrigine Use in Lactating Women: Passage Into Breast Milk and Infant Exposure.

BACKGROUND: Lamotrigine, an antiseizure medication used for epilepsy and bipolar disorders, is often prescribed to women of childbearing age due to relatively low teratogenic risk. It is known that lamotrigine use in lactation leads to detectable concentrations in breast milk, although concentrations vary significantly among individuals. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old pregnant woman with epilepsy presented to our outpatient clinic. She was seizure-free and was taking lamotrigine 200 mg once daily. She is highly motivated to breastfeed her baby after birth but is concerned about the infant's
