Child, parent, and peer predictors of early-onset substance use: a multisite longitudinal study.

The purpose of this study was to identify kindergarten-age predictors of early-onset substance use from demographic, environmental, parenting, child psychological, behavioral, and social functioning domains. Data from a longitudinal study of 295 children were gathered using multiple-assessment methods and multiple informants in kindergarten and 1st grade. Annual assessments at ages 10, 11, and 12 reflected that 21% of children reported having initiated substance use by age 12. Results from longitudinal logistic regression models indicated that risk factors at kindergarten include being male, h

Blushing and physiological arousability in social phobia.

Blushing is the most prominent symptom of social phobia, and fear perception of visible anxiety symptoms is an important component of cognitive behavioral models of social phobia. However, it is not clear how physiological and psychological aspects of blushing and other somatic symptoms are linked in this disorder. The authors tested whether social situations trigger different facial blood volume changes (blushing) between social phobic persons with and without primary complaint of blushing and control participants. Thirty social phobic persons. 15 of whom were especially concerned about blush

Alcoholic hangover and performance: a review.

The study of alcoholic hangover is reviewed, with particular concern given to its effects upon skills performance. Different models of hangover, and the evidence gathered in their support, are surveyed. Several factors appear to contribute to hangover, and individuals may be differentially susceptible to these influences. The severity of hangover is affected by dose, coproducts of manufacture, and a number of psychological variables. Hangover is differentiated from post-intoxication effects on performance, and the results of a variety of studies on these effects are considered. Post-intoxicati

How teacher support shapes reading literacy among urban primary school pupils in China: evidence from achievement emotions and reading self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Reading literacy is a fundamental determinant of academic achievement. However, the complex psychological mechanisms linking teacher support to reading literacy during the critical developmental transition of middle childhood remain insufficiently understood. This gap is particularly evident within the Confucian Heritage Culture (CHC) context, where teacher authority and social validation are highly prominent. Grounded in an integration of control-value theory and social cognitive theory, this study aims to investigate the parallel mediating roles of achievement emotions (an affect

Rapid Qualitative Analysis to Inform Preimplementation of a Stepped-Care Model for Depression Care Among Older People Living With HIV in Ibadan, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Depression is common among older adults living with HIV (OLHIV) and is associated with poor antiretroviral adherence and higher viral load. Despite the importance of addressing psychological health issues in older people living with HIV, there is a paucity of tailored depression interventions for low-resource settings. Although the stepped-care task-sharing (SCT) intervention model is effective for depression in low-resource settings, it has not been applied to this population. This study examined preimplementation requirements for piloting a SCT model for depression among OLHIV in

Effect of Music Intervention on Pain, Anxiety, and Vital Signs in Radiotherapy Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial Based on the Roy Adaptation Model.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, following cardiovascular diseases. Radiotherapy (RT), a common cancer treatment modality, often induces both physical discomfort and psychological distress, including pain and anxiety. Although music interventions have shown promise in reducing such symptoms, most studies lack a theoretical foundation, limiting their generalizability and application in nursing practice. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a music intervention on pain, anxiety, and vital signs in patients undergoing RT, using the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) as the the

Implementation of Ambulatory Kidney Supportive Care in a Safety Net Hospital.

CONTEXT: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately impacts lower socioeconomic groups and is associated with many symptoms and complex decisions. Integration of Kidney Supportive Care (KSC) with CKD care can address these needs. To our knowledge, this approach has not been described in an underserved population. OBJECTIVES: We describe our adaptation of an ambulatory integrated KSC and CKD clinic for implementation in a safety net hospital. We report our utilization metrics; characteristics of the population served; and visit activities. METHODS: We considered modifications from the pe

A study protocol for risk stratification in children with concussion (RSiCC): Theoretical framework, design, and methods.

Research shows that one in five children will experience a concussion by age 16. Compared to adults, children experience longer and more severe postconcussive symptoms (PCS), with severity and duration varying considerably among children and complicating management of these patients. Persistent PCS can result in increased school absenteeism, social isolation, and psychological distress. Although early PCS diagnosis and access to evidence-based interventions are strongly linked to positive health and academic outcomes, symptom severity and duration are not fully explained by acute post-injury s

An integrated, collaborative healthcare model for the early diagnosis and management of dementia: Preliminary audit results from the first transdisciplinary service integrating family medicine and geriatric psychiatry services to the heart of patients' homes.

BACKGROUND: The number of dementia cases is expected to rise exponentially over the years in many parts of the world. Collaborative healthcare partnerships are envisaged as a solution to this problem. Primary care physicians form the vanguard of early detection of dementia and influence clinical care that these patients receive. However, evidence suggests that they will benefit from closer support from specialist services in dementia care. An interdisciplinary, collaborative memory clinic was established in 2012 as a collaborative effort between a large family medicine based service and a spec

Myocardial fibrosis, inflammation, and altered cardiac gene expression profiles in rats exposed to a predator-based model of posttraumatic stress disorder.

People who are exposed to life-threatening trauma are at risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In addition to psychological manifestations, PTSD is associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, hypertension, and other cardiovascular problems. We previously reported that rats exposed to a predator-based model of PTSD develop myocardial hypersensitivity to ischemic injury. This study characterized cardiac changes in histology and gene expression in rats exposed this model. Male rats were subjected to two cat exposures (separated by a period of 10 d)

A conceptual model of the risk of elder abuse posed by incontinence and care dependence.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe and critically analyse the thinking that led to the concept of an association between incontinence, care dependence and elder abuse. BACKGROUND: Coercive or abusive continence care practices include chastising a person for their incontinence and overriding their attempts to resist continence care. Neglect in continence care is characterised by withholding or delaying responding to requests for help to maintain continence or to manage incontinence, and restricting a person's access to toileting assistance, incontinence aids or hygiene care. METHODS: Contempora

Excessive exercise among adolescents with eating disorders: examination of psychological and demographic variables.

Background While a large number of patients with eating disorders (EDs) engage in excessive exercise (EE), both for weight control and mood regulation, there has been minimal research evaluating the relationship between EE and demographic and psychological factors, especially in adolescent patients. Purpose The goals of this study were to identify the occurrence of EE compared to other ED behaviors and to develop a regression model examining psychological, behavioral and demographic predictors of EE among adolescents with EDs. Methods Demographic and clinical information was determined for 217

A novel rat model of comorbid PTSD and addiction reveals intersections between stress susceptibility and enhanced cocaine seeking with a role for mGlu5 receptors.

PTSD is highly comorbid with cocaine use disorder (CUD), and cocaine users with PTSD + CUD are more resistant to treatment. Here we sought to develop a rat model of PTSD + CUD in order to identify the neurobiological changes underlying such comorbidity and screen potential medications for reducing cocaine seeking in the PTSD population. We utilized a predator scent stress model of PTSD, wherein rats received a single exposure to the fox pheromone 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT). One week after TMT exposure, stress-susceptible (susceptible), intermediate, and resilient phenotypes we

Determinants of Spousal Loneliness Among Caregivers for Patients with Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), the most severe form of diabetic retinopathy, imposes overwhelming caregiving demands on family caregivers, with spouses typically assuming the primary caregiving role. However, their psychosocial well-being, particularly loneliness-a major modifiable risk factor for adverse health outcomes-remains severely understudied. Guided by the relational model of stress, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of loneliness and identify its multilevel determinants among spousal caregivers of patients with PDR. METHODS: In this cross-sectional stud
