CAIPIRINHA-Dixon-TWIST (CDT)-VIBE MR imaging of the liver at 3.0T with gadoxetate disodium: a solution for transient arterial-phase respiratory motion-related artifacts?

PURPOSE: To determine whether CAIPIRINHA-Dixon-TWIST (CDT) volume-interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) improves image quality by reducing gadoxetate-disodium-associated transient arterial-phase motion artefacts in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the liver. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI studies of the liver from 270 patients who had received gadoxetate disodium were retrospectively evaluated in regard to arterial timing accuracy and arterial phase motion artefact severity (VIBE: 90/270, CAIPIRINHA-VIBE: 90/270 and CDT-VIBE: 90/270 cases). Three independent and blinded readers assessed

Comparison of improved range of motion between cam-type femoroacetabular impingement and borderline developmental dysplasia of the hip -evaluation by virtual osteochondroplasty using computer simulation.

BACKGROUND: While cam resection is essential to achieve a good clinical result with respect to femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), it is unclear whether it should also be performed in cases of borderline developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) with a cam deformity. The aim of this study was to evaluate improvements in range of motion (ROM) in cases of cam-type FAI and borderline DDH after virtual osteochondroplasty using a computer impingement simulation. METHODS: Thirty-eight symptomatic hips in 31 patients (11male and 20 female) diagnosed with cam-type FAI or borderline DDH were analyzed.

Scar extent, left ventricular end-diastolic volume, and wall motion abnormalities identify high-risk patients with previous myocardial infarction: a multiparametric approach for prognostic stratification.

AIMS: We sought to investigate whether combining left ventricular (LV) volumes, regional wall motion abnormalities, and scar tissue extent obtained by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) improves risk stratification of patients with previous myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS AND RESULTS: In 231 consecutive patients (age 64 ± 11 years, males 89%) with previous MI, we quantified LV volumes and regional wall motion abnormalities by cine CMR, and measured the extent of the infarction scar by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE). During follow-up (median, 3.2 years) cardiac events (cardiac death or ap

Functional outcome and range of motion of high-flexion posterior cruciate-retaining and high-flexion posterior cruciate-substituting total knee prostheses. A prospective, randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Although the design features of the high-flexion posterior cruciate-retaining and high-flexion posterior cruciate-substituting total knee prostheses reportedly improve the range of knee motion, a clinical comparison of both systems with regard to range of motion has not been reported, to our knowledge. The purpose of the present study was to compare the range of motion and functional outcome in knees receiving either a high-flexion posterior cruciate-retaining or a high-flexion posterior cruciate-substituting total knee prosthesis. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty patients (mean age

[Assessment of regional wall motion using strain Doppler imaging during right ventricular bifocal pacing in a patient with severe congestive heart failure: a case report].

A 79-year-old man presented with dilated cardiomyopathy and chronic atrial fibrillation. A DDD pacemaker was implanted due to sick sinus syndrome. His left ventricular ejection fraction was 23%. He was repeatedly admitted with congestive heart failure. Although cardiac resynchronization therapy was attempted, insertion of a pacing lead into the coronary sinus failed. Right ventricular bifocal pacing was done. The QRS width was shortened to 155 msec during bifocal pacing and 157 msec during right ventricular outflow pacing from 221 msec during right ventricular apical pacing. Heart failure was

Quantification of low-velocity motion using a navigator-echo supported MR velocity-mapping technique: application to intracranial dynamics in volunteers and patients with brain tumours.

Gradient-echo pulse sequences with velocity-encoding gradients of 22.5-25 mT/m, were used for brain-motion and CSF-flow studies. To reduce motion artifacts, a phase-correction technique based on navigator echoes was evaluated. Three patients with right-sided parietal tumours were investigated; one astrocytoma grade III-IV, one astrocytoma grade I-II and one benign meningioma. In healthy volunteers, a maximal brain-tissue velocity of (0.94 +/- 0.26) mm/s (mean +/- 1SD) was observed, which is consistent with previously presented results. The phase correction was proven useful for reduction of ar

Comparison of susceptibility to motion sickness during rotation at 30 rpm in the earth-horizontal, 10 degrees head-up, and 10 degrees head-down positions.

Normal persons rotated about an Earth-horizontal axis vary in their susceptibility to motion sickness. The purpose of this experiment was to measure, intraindividual differences in susceptibility in 12 subjects when rotated 10 degrees head up and 10 degrees head down as well as in the horizontal position. Subjects assumed the test-position 60 min prior to rotation, thus providing an opportunity for translocation of body fluids. Physiological and psychophysical measurements were conducted throughout the experiment. There were no intraindividual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness i

Co-manifestation of swallowing dysfunction indicators and vocal fold motion impairment within a shared neural substrate in patients with brain injury: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Vocal fold motion impairment (VFMI) is a common but frequently overlooked complication in patients with brain injury and can significantly compromise multiple airway protective functions-including glottic closure during swallowing, cough reflex, and cough effectiveness-leading to increased risks of aspiration, pneumonia, and poor clinical outcomes. Although swallowing dysfunction and VFMI often coexist in patients with brain injury, the specific characteristics and underlying mechanisms of their association have not been systematically investigated. METHODS: This single-center cro

Preoperative Cervical Extension and Flexion Range of Motion Predict Postoperative Kyphotic Change without Affecting 2-Year Clinical Outcomes Postoperatively after Laminoplasty for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy.

STUDY DESIGN: Multi-center retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether preoperative cervical extension range of motion (eROM) and flexion range of motion (fROM) predict postoperative kyphotic change and affect clinical outcomes after laminoplasty for degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cervical laminoplasty is a standard procedure for DCM; however, postoperative kyphotic change due to loss of cervical lordosis (CL) is a major concern. Although small eROM and large fROM may predict postoperative CL loss, their impact on clinical outcomes is un

Differences in kinematics, kinetics, and muscle activity between underwater dolphin kicking and flutter kicking: multiple approaches using three-dimensional motion analysis, electromyography, and hydrodynamic simulation.

It is well-known among swimmers and coaches that the swimming speed of the underwater dolphin kick (UDK) is higher than that of the underwater flutter kick (UFK). This study aimed to clarify the differences in swimming performance between the two kicking styles in terms of kinematics, kinetics and muscle activity. Eight male swimmers performed UDK and UFK in a water flume at same effort levels. The three-dimensional motion analysis and measurement of surface electromyography for the left lower limb were performed. The fluid forces acting on the body and joint torques were estimated using Swums

Medicaid-Insured Patients Exhibit Similar Improvements in Knee Range of Motion Compared to Commercially Insured Patients Despite Inferior Access to Physical Therapy Following ACL Reconstruction.

Insurance status has been shown to impact clinical outcomes after several orthopaedic procedures. Current evidence examining the role of insurance provider on outcomes following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is limited. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to explore the effect that insurance carrier had on physical therapy (PT) access, knee range of motion (ROM), and Knee Outcome Survey (KOS) scores. A retrospective cohort study identified patients who underwent ACL reconstruction at an academic health system from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2021. Patients we

Effects of tape and Kinesiotape on ankle range of motion, Single Leg Drop Jump and balance after running-induced fatigue: a cross-over clinical trial.

The prevention and management of injuries in runners is a key area of research in sports medicine. Fatigue during running can lead to biomechanical imbalances and inhibition of stabilizing muscles, increasing the risk of injury. With the ankle being the most commonly injured joint in runners, rigid tape (RT) and Kinesiotape (KT) have been proposed as effective methods to improve joint stability and reduce injury risk. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of a KT and RT and no tape (control group) on lower limb balance, ankle dorsiflexion ROM, and electromyographic (EMG) activ
