Adnexal Masses: Diagnosis and Management.

Pelvic masses occur in up to 20% of women throughout their lifetime. These masses represent a spectrum of gynecologic and nongynecologic conditions. Adnexal masses-found in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and surrounding areas-are mostly benign. Evaluation includes assessment for symptoms that may suggest malignancy, such as abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, and early satiety. A family history of ovarian, breast, or certain heritable syndromes increases the risk of malignancy. For women of reproductive age, ectopic pregnancies must be considered; a beta human chorionic gonadotropin level shoul

Indocyanine green fluorescence guided resection of parathyroid adenoma of the carotid sheath: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic parathyroid tissue can pose difficulties in diagnosis, management, and resection of adenomas in patients with hyperparathyroidism. The use of multimodal pre-operative imaging is recommended due to the diverse anatomic presentation of parathyroid adenomas and the potential presence of multiple adenomas. Resection failure still can occur, however, indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging is an intraoperative tool that has potential to help address this challenge. In the case which follows we demonstrate the use of ICG fluorescence imaging to assist in successful resection

Uterine abscess as an appendicitis complication: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is a frequent cause of abdominal pain that requires surgical intervention. Rarely complications such as appendico-vesical, appendico-cutaneous, or appendico-uterine fistula formation may occur. CASE AND OUTCOMES: We present a case of an 83-year-old woman who suffered from a very rare complication of acute appendicitis. Multimodal radiologic examination including ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed complicated appendicitis with an abscess formation involving the right adnexal region and uterine cavity. [Imaging and Manipulation of Stem and Progenitor Cells for Revealing the Novel Mechanism of Local Tissue Maintenance in the Brain].

We have been investigating the physiological and pathological roles of stem cells and progenitor cells in the central nervous system using multimodal imaging methods, including positron emission tomography (PET), in vivo optical imaging, and light as well as electron microscopy. Furthermore, we generated transgenic rats for selective ablation of these cells. Imaging studies have demonstrated the proliferation and dynamics of neural stem cells in neurogenic regions and glial progenitor cells expressing a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (neuron-glial antigen 2; NG2) in the brain of adult rodent

Macrophage-Laden Gold Nanoflowers Embedded with Ultrasmall Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Enhanced Dual-Mode CT/MR Imaging of Tumors.

The design of multimodal imaging nanoplatforms with improved tumor accumulation represents a major trend in the current development of precision nanomedicine. To this end, we report herein the preparation of macrophage (MA)-laden gold nanoflowers (NFs) embedded with ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles (USIO NPs) for enhanced dual-mode computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of tumors. In this work, generation 5 poly(amidoamine) (G5 PAMAM) dendrimer-stabilized gold (Au) NPs were conjugated with sodium citrate-stabilized USIO NPs to form hybrid seed particles for the subsequ

Assessing the Severity of Traumatic Brain Injury-Time for a Change?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been described to be man's most complex disease, in man's most complex organ. Despite this vast complexity, variability, and individuality, we still classify the severity of TBI based on non-specific, often unreliable, and pathophysiologically poorly understood measures. Current classifications are primarily based on clinical evaluations, which are non-specific and poorly predictive of long-term disability. Brain imaging results have also been used, yet there are multiple ways of doing brain imaging, at different timepoints in this very dynamic injury. Severity

Noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging techniques in mild traumatic brain injury research and diagnosis.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), frequently referred to as concussion, is one of the most common neurological disorders. The underlying neural mechanisms of functional disturbances in the brains of concussed individuals remain elusive. Novel forms of brain imaging have been developed to assess patients postconcussion, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), diffusion MRI (dMRI), and perfusion MRI [arterial spin labeling (ASL)], but results have been mixed with a more common utilization in the research environment and a slower integratio

Contrast agents for photoacoustic imaging: a review of stem cell tracking.

With the advent of stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries, stroke, burns, macular degeneration, heart diseases, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis; the need to track the survival, migration pathways, spatial destination and differentiation of transplanted stem cells in a clinical setting has gained increased relevance. Indeed, getting regulatory approval to use these therapies in the clinic depends on biodistribution studies. Although optoacoustic imaging (OAI) or photoacoustic imaging can detect functional information of cell activities in real-time, the selection and appli

Health Care Delivery for Metastatic Hormone-sensitive Prostate Cancer Across the Globe.

Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related death in men. Concurrently, the incidence of metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) at diagnosis has significantly risen as a result, in part, of recent advances in imaging. Given the increased utilization of prostate-specific membrane antigen-targeted positron emission tomography imaging and other modalities with improved accuracy in the detection of cancer, combined with changes in screening and other secular trends, more men get diagnosed at an oligometastatic stage in which timely treatment may improve survival. Advances in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma prognosis is related to its potential locoregional invasion and metastatic spread. Among prognostic factors, initial tumor-node-metastasis stage is the main one, besides other biological parameters. Worldwide development of positron emission tomography imaging is changing modalities of staging. Concomitant chemoradiotherapy represents one of the most recent advances in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, besides intensity-modulated radiation therapy. This review updates these recent advances in diagnosis and treatment of nasopharyngea

Multimodal evaluation and etiology-oriented management of chronic intracranial venous hypertension.

Chronic intracranial venous hypertension (CIVHS) comprises a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by impaired cerebral venous outflow and symptoms related to elevated intracranial pressure. Although venous sinus stenting is increasingly used for venous sinus stenosis with elevated trans-stenotic pressure gradients, venous sinus stenosis is an imaging phenotype rather than a single diagnosis. We retrospectively reviewed 13 consecutive patients with CIVHS who underwent clinical, imaging, and hemodynamic evaluation, including conventional neuroimaging, MR or CT venography, digital subtr

[18F]FDG PET/MRI for axillary staging in node positive breast cancer patients receiving primary systemic therapy. A prospective single arm trial.

BACKGROUND: Management of axillary nodes in breast cancer (BC) remains controversial. Increasingly, node-positive patients receive primary systemic therapy (PST), achieving axillary downstaging in up to 70% of cases. However, current imaging methods, despite being pivotal in the choice for PST, show limited accuracy in assessing treatment response. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of hybrid [18F]FDG PET/MRI as non-invasive, single-step tool for post-PST nodal assessment. METHODS: This prospective, single-arm, monocentric interventional trial (SNBvsPET/MRI1, ClinicalTrials.gov N

Criminal Behavior in Frontotemporal Dementia: A Multimodal MRI Study.

The behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is related to a variety of social misbehaviors, including criminal behavior (CB) due to deep changes in cognition, behavior, and personality. Recent work suggests that impairment in emotional processing, along with disinhibition, constitutes the necessary elements for CB in bvFTD. However, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms are still unclear. Therefore, we aim at investigating structural and functional brain changes related to CB in bvFTD using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the German Consortium for Frontotemporal Lobar D

18 F-FDG PET/CT and 68 Ga-DOTA-NOC PET/MRI in an Adolescent With Ectopic Adrenocorticotropic Hormone Syndrome From a Presacral Teratoma.

A 13-year-old girl with severe Cushingoid features had ectopic ACTH-dependent Cushing syndrome. 18 F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated diffusely FDG-avid bilateral adrenal hyperplasia, confirming ectopic ACTH stimulation, and detected a presacral mass with mild uptake. 68 Ga-DOTA-NOC PET/MRI revealed intense somatostatin-receptor activity (SUVmax: 56.1), and MRI identified fat and cystic elements, suggesting teratoma. Surgery proved a mature teratoma harboring an ACTH-secreting NET (G1). This rare case demonstrates that in pediatric patients with aggressive-appearing presacral masses and life-threatenin

Diagnostic performance of simultaneous PET-MR versus PET-CT in oncology with an overview on clinical utility and referral pattern of PET-MR: a single institutional study.

BACKGROUND: PET-Magnetic Resonance (PET-MR) imaging is an upcoming investigative modality with a few installations in Asia and only three in India. PET-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) is an established diagnostic cornerstone for oncological indications but with limited resolution for small lesions due to low soft-tissue contrast and additional radiation exposure. OBJECTIVE: Our primary objective was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of simultaneous PET-MR and PET-CT in lesion detection in oncological practice. Secondly to assess the referral pattern and study the clinical utility of PET-MR
