Common and distinct neural substrates of sentence production and comprehension.

Functional neuroimaging and lesion-symptom mapping investigations implicate a left frontal-temporal-parietal network for sentence processing. The majority of studies have focused on sentence comprehension, with fewer in the domain of sentence production, which have not fully elucidated overlapping and/or unique brain structures associated with the two domains, particularly for sentences with noncanonical word order. Using voxel-based lesion symptom mapping (VLSM) we examined the relationship between lesions within the left hemisphere language network and both sentence comprehension and product

Artists Can Design Memory, and AI Can Predict It.

Can artists deliberately design artworks to be remembered-or forgotten? Across three experiments, we tested whether visual-memory outcomes can be shaped through artistic design and how they are predicted by artists, laypeople, and artificial intelligence. We launched a nationwide art contest in which artists submitted works intended to be memorable or forgettable. Using recognition tasks with adults based in the United States (119 from Amazon Mechanical Turk, 892 from Prolific, and 62 visitors from a Chicago gallery), we found that artists achieved their intended memory outcomes. However, thei

Ultrasound-assisted enzymatic synthesis of medium- and long-chain triacylglycerols from tricaprylin and algal oil.

Medium and long-chain triacylglycerols (MLCTs) are functional lipids, but their efficient synthesis in various systems remains challenging. An ultrasound-assisted enzymatic interesterification process was developed using tricaprylin and algal oil as substrates. The optimized enzymatic conditions were obtained by artificial neural network modeling. The structure of enzyme and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of enzymatic process were both evaluated. The results showed that the MLCT yield reached 69.16%, with Cy-Cy-DHA as the predominant product (28.99%). Only slight structural changes were ob

Regularised Spectral Estimation for High-Dimensional Point Processes.

Advances in modern technology have enabled the simultaneous recording of neural spiking activity across large numbers of neurons, which statistically can be represented by a multivariate point process. We characterise the second order structure of this process via the spectral density matrix, a frequency domain equivalent of the covariance matrix. In the context of neuronal analysis, statistics based on the spectral density matrix can be used to infer connectivity in the brain network between individual neurons. However, the high-dimensional nature of spike train data mean that it is often dif

All-optical control of nonlinear emission from resonant metasurfaces.

Nonlinear optics underpins a broad range of photonic technologies, from classical and quantum light sources to emerging nonlinear photonic neural networks. Yet, conventional nonlinear-optical devices exhibit static functionality: Their transfer characteristics and emission profiles are dictated by the intrinsic nonlinear process and locked by fabrication, limiting adaptability. Here, we introduce an ultrathin metasurface platform that enables dynamic reconfiguration of nonlinear functionality in a contactless fashion. By leveraging all-optical control of the optical torque exerted on liquid cr

Unconventional Spin Currents in Noncollinear Antiferromagnet Mn3Ge.

Unconventional spin-orbit torque (SOT) has garnered significant attention due to its potential for enabling energy-efficient and deterministic control of magnetization states. Noncollinear antiferromagnets (NCAFs) are considered ideal systems for generating such unconventional SOTs, making them highly promising for the development of next-generation spintronic devices. In this study, we report the generation of spin torques in noncollinear antiferromagnetic Mn3Ge, revealing the presence of unconventional spin polarizations (specifically, x- and z-polarized spin currents) by employing the spin-

Rapid wall shear stress prediction for aortic aneurysms using deep learning: a fast alternative to CFD.

Aortic aneurysms pose a significant risk of rupture. Previous research has shown that areas exposed to low wall shear stress (WSS) are more prone to rupture. Therefore, precise WSS determination on the aneurysm is crucial for rupture risk assessment. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a powerful approach for WSS calculations, but they are computationally intensive, hindering time-sensitive clinical decision-making. In this study, we propose a deep learning (DL) surrogate, MultiViewUNet, to rapidly predict time-averaged WSS (TAWSS) distributions on abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). Our novel

Segger: Fast and accurate cell segmentation of imaging-based spatial transcriptomics data.

The accurate assignment of transcripts to their cells of origin remains the Achilles heel of imaging-based spatial transcriptomics, despite being critical for nearly all downstream analyses. Current cell segmentation methods are prone to over- and under-segmentation, misassign transcripts to cells, require manual intervention, and suffer from low sensitivity and scalability. We introduce segger, a versatile graph neural network based on a heterogeneous graph representation of individual transcripts and cells, that frames cell segmentation as a transcript-to-cell link prediction task and can le

Differential modulation of feedforward inhibition reflects topographic organization in the olfactory system.

The nervous system flexibly processes information under different conditions. To do this, neural networks frequently rely on uniform expression of modulatory receptors by distinct classes of neurons to fine tune the computations supported by each neuronal class. Here, we explore an alternate organization in which one population of neurons in the olfactory system of Drosophila expresses all of the receptors for the modulator serotonin. We find extensive, heterogeneous receptor co-expression by ventral projection neurons (v-PNs), with many receptor combinations present. Despite overlap in glomer

Neural Networks Based on Synthesized Training Data for the Automated Detection of Chemical Plumes in Passive Infrared Multispectral Images.

Automated detection of volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere can be achieved by applying pattern recognition analysis to passive infrared (IR) multispectral remote sensing data. However, obtaining analyte-active training data through field experiments is time-consuming and expensive. To address this issue, methodology has been developed for simulating radiance profiles acquired using a multispectral IR line-scanner mounted in a downward-looking position on a fixed-wing aircraft. The simulation strategy used Planck's radiation law and a radiometric model along with the laboratory spectru

Deep Potential Molecular Dynamics Study of Chapman-Jouguet Detonation Events of Energetic Materials.

Detonation of energetic materials (EMs) is of great importance for military applications, while the understanding of detailed events and mechanisms for the detonation process is scarce. In this study, the first deep neural network potential NNP_Shock for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of shock-induced detonation of EMs was generated based on a deep potential model, providing DFT accuracy but 106 times the computational efficiency. On this basis, we employ our deep potential to perform MD simulations of shock-induced detonation of high-performance EM material 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8

Sensory integration dynamics in a hierarchical network explains choice probabilities in cortical area MT.

Neuronal variability in sensory cortex predicts perceptual decisions. This relationship, termed choice probability (CP), can arise from sensory variability biasing behaviour and from top-down signals reflecting behaviour. To investigate the interaction of these mechanisms during the decision-making process, we use a hierarchical network model composed of reciprocally connected sensory and integration circuits. Consistent with monkey behaviour in a fixed-duration motion discrimination task, the model integrates sensory evidence transiently, giving rise to a decaying bottom-up CP component. Howe

The neurobiological basis of the awe experience in affective disorders: an exploratory EEG study.

INTRODUCTION: Affective disorders (ADs) are characterized by profound emotional processing deficits involving disrupted neural network activity and connectivity, particularly within the default mode network and fronto-temporal circuits, with abnormalities in theta and alpha oscillatory patterns. While current treatments primarily target mood symptoms, emotional processing impairments often persist and predict relapses. Awe, a complex self-transcendent emotion, may counteract such deficits through its capacity to reduce rumination and enhance positive affect. However, the neural correlates of a

Robust Fastener Detection Based on Force and Vision Algorithms in Robotic (Un)Screwing Applications.

This article addresses how to tackle one of the most demanding tasks in manufacturing and industrial maintenance sectors: using robots with a novel and robust solution to detect the fastener and its rotation in (un)screwing tasks over parallel surfaces with respect to the tool. To this end, the vision system is based on an industrial camera with a dynamic exposure time, a tunable liquid crystal lens (TLCL), and active near-infrared reflectance (NIR) illumination. Its camera parameters, combined with a fixed value of working distance (WD) and variable or constant field of view (FOV), make it po

Machine learning enabled molecular dynamics-Monte Carlo framework for nanoconfined fluid adsorption.

Nanoconfined fluid is central to many engineering applications such as shale energy production, carbon sequestration, and molecular separations. While classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation provides essential atomistic detail, its prohibitive computational cost severely limits accessible time and length scales. Hybrid MD-Monte Carlo (MDMC) methods accelerate sampling but lack generality beyond their trained conditions. In this work, we introduce an AI-assisted MDMC framework that overcomes this limitation by learning local, conditional transition statistics directly from MD trajectories.

Molecular absorption and fluorescence property prediction via a multimodal consensus model: Winning solution for the Transmittance category of the 2nd EUOS/SLAS Joint Challenge.

The 2nd EUOS/SLAS Joint Challenge was a competition aimed at developing reliable computational models for predicting transmittance and fluorescence properties from the chemical structures of approximately 100,000 compounds. This paper describes the method that achieved 1st place in the blind test of the Transmittance category. Our approach is based on a consensus strategy that integrates diverse predictions from multiple model types, including gradient boosting decision trees, message passing neural networks (MPNNs), and Uni-Mol2, via a weighted ensemble, covering multimodal molecular represen

HNRM: hyperedge neighborhood-based representation for predicting N6-methyladenosine-related regulatory pathways.

BACKGROUND: N6-methyladenosine (m6A), the most predominant post-transcriptional RNA modification, regulates splicing, translation, and decay processes. Its dysregulation is implicated in cancers, metabolic disorders, and neurological diseases. Despite accumulating evidence highlighting m6A as a key player in human pathologies, no previous computational framework has investigated the high-order associations among m6A sites, diseases, and drugs within a unified model. RESULTS: Here, we introduce HNRM, a data-driven approach designed to model hyperedges across these entities. We frame this probl

Joint Trajectory Replanning for Mars Ascent Vehicle Under Propulsion System Faults: A Suboptimal Learning-Based Warm-Start Approach.

This article presents a suboptimal joint trajectory replanning (SJTR) method for Mars ascent vehicle (MAV) launch missions under propulsion system faults. Conventional step-by-step trajectory replanning may fail to make timely decisions, risking mission failure. The SJTR method formulates a joint convex optimization problem of target orbit and flight trajectory after a fault. By applying penalty coefficients for terminal constraints, it adheres to the orbit redecision principles, enabling a concise and rapid solution. To further enhance the convergence and the accuracy of orbit-type determinat
