Dynamic Cleft Maxillary Orthopedics and Periosteoplasty.

In 1985 this cleft team, dissatisfied with the treatment and results from cleft lip and palate repair, began a longitudinal long-term study using dynamic maxillary orthopedics and periosteoplasty as was originally described by Drs Millard and Latham. All cases were carefully documented through adolescence, including clinical assessments, orthodontic, radiographic, and cephalometric analyses. In 1998, in this journal, we published our data on 35 complete unilateral and 10 complete bilateral cleft patients. At that time facial growth was following normal cephalometric patterns. Crossbites were d

Predictors of sleep disordered breathing in children: the PANIC study.

OBJECTIVE: We studied longitudinally the associations of craniofacial morphology, mouth breathing, orthodontic treatment, and body fat content with the risk of having and developing sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in childhood. We hypothesized that deviant craniofacial morphology, mouth breathing, and adiposity predict SDB among children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants were 412 children 6-8 years of age examined at baseline and 329 children aged 9-11 years re-examined at an average 2.2-year follow-up. An experienced orthodontist evaluated facial proportions, dental occlusion, soft t

An atypical presentation of mechanical failure of eruption of a mandibular permanent molar: diagnosis and treatment case report.

BACKGROUND: Failure of eruption of mandibular permanent molars occurs infrequently but is a difficult clinical problem. It can be due to local or systemic factors or failure of the eruption process. Primary failure of eruption (PFE) is a rare condition that can result in severe posterior open bite, requires complex treatment strategies and has unfavourable outcomes. Mechanical failure of eruption (MFE) is more unusual but can respond positively to treatment. Differentiating between the two is crucial in making the correct diagnosis and managing the case successfully. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-ol

Three-dimensional assessment of impacted canines and root resorption using cone beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to localize impacted canines in 3 dimensions and determine the most common location of impaction using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). We also assessed root resorption of adjacent teeth. The cusp tip of each impacted canine was located and digitized using Dolphin 3D imaging, after viewing sagittal, coronal, and axial views. The position on the occlusal plane where the normally erupted canine cusp tip should be located was used as a control reference point. The degree of impaction was defined by the difference between the impacted canine cusp tip

An association between sella turcica bridging and dental transposition.

The aim of the present study was to determine any association between tooth transposition and bridging of the sella turcica, given the evidence of common embryonic origins associated with these structures and a genetic basis underlying these two conditions. Clinical records of subjects demonstrating dental transposition and normal controls were collected from several hospital orthodontic departments and specialist orthodontic practices. All cases and controls were documented with good quality lateral cephalometric radiographs and dental panoramic tomograms (DPTs). The study sample consisted of

Suture biology: Lessons from molecular genetics of craniosynostosis syndromes.

Sutures are critical growth sites in the developing craniofacial skeleton, and equally importantly, they are the target tissues for certain orthodontic therapeutic modalities. For these reasons, suture biology has long been an area of significant interest in orthodontics. In fact, much of our knowledge on sutures, such as structure, ontogeny, growth and development, pathology, and tissue response to biomechanical forces, is based on investigations conducted by orthodontic researchers in the 1950-1970s. Despite their significant impact in the establishment of the current paradigm in suture biol

Association between vertical and sagittal skeletal cephalometric patterns and the prevalence of dental number anomalies and tooth impaction.

BACKGROUND: Dental anomalies and craniofacial skeletal discrepancies frequently coexist in orthodontic patients and may share common developmental pathways. However, evidence regarding associations between specific dental anomalies and sagittal or vertical skeletal patterns remains inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate the association between sagittal and vertical cephalometric skeletal patterns and the prevalence of tooth number anomalies and tooth impaction in orthodontic patients. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 900 orthodontic patients with pretreatment pan
