The role of 18F-FDG PET in minimizing variability in gross tumor volume delineation of soft tissue sarcomas.

BACKGROUND: Accurate gross tumor volume (GTV) delineation is a critical step in radiation therapy treatment planning. However, it is reader dependent and thus susceptible to intra- and inter-reader variability. GTV delineation of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) often relies on CT and MR images. PURPOSE: This study investigates the potential role of 18F-FDG PET in reducing intra- and inter-reader variability thereby improving reproducibility of GTV delineation in STS, without incurring additional costs or radiation exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three readers performed independent GTV delineation

Comparison of PET tracing and biodistribution between 64Cu-labeled micro-and nano-polystyrene in a murine inhalation model.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies showed the presence of microplastic in human lungs. There remains an unmet need to identify the biodistribution of microplastic after inhalation. In this study, we traced the biodistribution of inhaled micro-sized polystyrene (mPS) and/or nano-sized PS (nPS) using 64Cu with PET in mice. METHODS: We used 0.2-0.3-µm sized mPS and 20-nm sized nPS throughout. 64Cu-DOTA-mPS, 64Cu-DOTA-nPS and/or 64CuCl2 were used to trace the distribution in the murine inhalation model. PET images were acquired using an INVEON PET scanner at 1, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h after intratracheal

Strategies of positron emission tomography (PET) tracer development for imaging of tau and α-synuclein in neurodegenerative disorders.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by the presence of extracellular amyloid plaques consisting of β-amyloid peptides (Aβ) and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) composed of hyperphosphorylated tau (pTau) protein in the brain. Genetic and animal studies strongly indicate that Aβ, tau and neuroinflammation play important roles in the pathogenesis of AD. Several staging models showed that NFTs correlated well with the disease progression. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging has become a widely used non-invasive technique to image N

Semi-supervised learning towards automated segmentation of PET images with limited annotations: application to lymphoma patients.

Manual segmentation poses a time-consuming challenge for disease quantification, therapy evaluation, treatment planning, and outcome prediction. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) hold promise in accurately identifying tumor locations and boundaries in PET scans. However, a major hurdle is the extensive amount of supervised and annotated data necessary for training. To overcome this limitation, this study explores semi-supervised approaches utilizing unlabeled data, specifically focusing on PET images of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMB

PET/CT Response Assessment in Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma: Does Deauville Score 3 Reflect Negativity?

BACKGROUND: FDG PET is required for the staging and response evaluation of pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of pediatric patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma based on interim PET CT assessments of early response following second-cycle chemotherapy using the Deauville score (DS). It also determines whether DS-3 is providing an adequate or inadequate response. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including 504 pediatric patients with classic Hodgkin lymphoma who were treated with chemotherapy based on the Euro-Net protocol at the Children Cancer Ho

Epithelial Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Mimics Lymphoma on 18 F-FDG PET/MRI : A Case Report.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare tumor with a poor prognosis. We describe a case of 55-year-old man without asbestos exposure history presenting with extensive lymph nodes with high 18 F-FDG uptake in PET/MRI but atypical pleural manifestations thereby being misdiagnosed for lymphoma. Pathological examination concludes for an epithelioid mesothelioma-associated lymph node metastasis. This case emphasizes that with the extensive lymph node abnormalities shown in PET imaging, in addition to the general consideration of lymphoma, it is still necessary to be vigilant about the possibility

Early treatment response assessment with [177Lu]PSMA whole-body-scintigraphy compared to interim PSMA-PET.

BACKGROUND: Prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography (PSMA-PET) is an essential tool for patient selection before radioligand therapy (RLT). Interim-staging with PSMA-PET during RLT allows for therapy monitoring. However, its added value over post-treatment imaging is poorly elucidated. The aim of this study was to compare early treatment response assessed by post-therapeutic whole-body scans (WBS) with interim-staging by PSMA-PET after 2 cycles in order to prognosticate OS. METHODS: Men with metastasized castration-resistant PC (mCRPC) who had received at least two cyc

Peptide derived from plant defensins: A promising 68Ga radiolabelled agent for diagnostic of infection foci in PET.

The development of new radiopharmaceuticals for the detection of hidden infection foci has great relevance for early detection and the selection of the correct treatment, particularly in immunosuppressed patients. In that sense, the labelling of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that are capable of binding specifically to the pathogenic microorganism which causes the infection, should provide a sufficiently specific agent, able to distinguish an infection from a sterile inflammation. Defensins are particularly interesting molecules with antimicrobial activity, the EcgDf1 defensin was identified fr

Parenchymal CSF fraction is a measure of brain glymphatic clearance and positively associated with amyloid beta deposition on PET.

INTRODUCTION: Mapping of microscopic changes in the perivascular space (PVS) of the cerebral cortex, beyond magnetic resonance-visible PVS in white matter, may enhance our ability to diagnose Alzheimer's disease (AD) early. METHODS: We used the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) water fraction (CSFF), a magnetic resonance imaging-based biomarker, to characterize brain parenchymal CSF water, reflecting microscopic PVS in parenchyma. We measured CSFF and amyloid beta (Aβ) using 11 C Pittsburgh compound B positron emission tomography to investigate their relationship at both the subject and voxel levels.

Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis of Spinal Dura Presenting With "Bottle Brush Sign" on 18 F-FDG PET/CT.

A 72-year-old man with fever and weakness in both lower limbs underwent thoracolumbar MRI and 18 F-FDG PET/CT. The PET/CT scan revealed diffused FDG uptake along the spinal dura mater from T7 to S2 level like a "bottle brush." Pathologic examination after biopsy of spinal canal lesions manifested granulomatous inflammation. The blood test showed cytoplasmic antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) and myeloperoxidase-ANCAs were positive, whereas the perinuclear ANCA was negative. Eventually, he was diagnosed with granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

Association between appendicular skeletal muscle mass and myocardial glucose uptake measured by 18F-FDG PET.

BACKGROUND: Low muscle mass is associated with high insulin resistance and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aims to determine whether low muscle mass affects the alterations in myocardial substrate metabolism that are associated with the development of cardiovascular disease. METHOD: The study included 299 individuals (182 men and 117 women) who underwent examination at the Severance Health Check-up Center between January 2018 and February 2019. Myocardial glucose uptake was assessed using [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) scanning.

ParaPET: non-invasive deep learning method for direct parametric brain PET reconstruction using histoimages.

BACKGROUND: The indirect method for generating parametric images in positron emission tomography (PET) involves the acquisition and reconstruction of dynamic images and temporal modelling of tissue activity given a measured arterial input function. This approach is not robust, as noise in each dynamic image leads to a degradation in parameter estimation. Direct methods incorporate into the image reconstruction step both the kinetic and noise models, leading to improved parametric images. These methods require extensive computational time and large computing resources. Machine learning methods

Effect of Genetic Risk on the Relationship Between rs-fMRI Complexity and Tau and Amyloid PET in Alzheimer's Disease.

Reduced functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-complexity in Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression has been demonstrated and found to be associated with tauopathy and cognition. However, association of fMRI-complexity with amyloid and influence of genetic risk (APOEɛ4) remain unknown. Here we investigate the association between fMRI-complexity, tau-PET, and amyloid-PET as well as influence of APOE genotype using multivariate generalized linear models. We show that fMRI-complexity has a strong association with tau but not amyloid deposition and that the presence of an APOEɛ4 allele enhance

Cardiac myxoma with high standardized uptake value of FDG-PET-CT in the right ventricular outflow tract.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac myxoma rarely occurs in the right ventricle, and as is a benign disease, it rarely shows high positivity on 18F fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). CASE PRESENTATION: We present herein the case of a 77-year-old woman who was found to have a heart murmur during a routine health checkup. Further examination revealed a 27-mm tumor in the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and moderate aortic valve stenosis. Additionally, during her preoperative evaluation, she was diagnosed with a 10-mm tumor in the right breast, prompting h

18F-FDG PET/CT findings in fatal Balamuthia Mandrillaris encephalitis in brain stem: A case report.

We presented a case of a 66-year-old female whose initial symptom was headache without obvious inducement. The patient's condition progressed rapidly to a semi-coma state after symptomatic treatment. The 18F-FDG PET/CT scan revealed circular FDG hypermetabolism and central metabolic defect of the pons and left frontal lobe lesions. The combination of clinical findings, MRI, and Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (NGS) of cerebrospinal fluid led to the diagnosis of Balamuthia mandrillaris encephalitis. The patient died 5 days after discharge.

Clinicopathologic findings and causes of mortality in 100 pet rabbits from the Canary Islands, Spain, 2011-2022.

The European domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus) is commonly kept as a pet, with increasing popularity among pet owners. Despite the increasing body of information on lagomorph medicine and pathology, comprehensive published compilations of causes of mortality in pet rabbits are limited. We analyzed health disorders, pathology findings, and most probable causes of death in 100 pet rabbits submitted to the Anatomopathological Diagnostic Service of the Veterinary School of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, from 2011 to 2022. We reviewed clinical

Progression trajectories from prodromal to overt synucleinopathies: a longitudinal, multicentric brain [18F]FDG-PET study.

The phenoconversion trajectory from idiopathic/isolated Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) towards either Parkinson's Disease (PD) or Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) is currently uncertain. We investigated the capability of baseline brain [18F]FDG-PET in differentiating between iRBD patients eventually phenoconverting to PD or DLB, by deriving the denovoPDRBD-related pattern (denovoPDRBD-RP) from 32 de novo PD patients; and the denovoDLBRBD-RP from 30 de novo DLB patients, both with evidence of RBD at diagnosis. To explore [18F]FDG-PET phenoconversion trajectories predicti
