The CT scout view: does it need to be routinely reviewed as part of the CT interpretation?

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to determine whether the CT scout view should be routinely reviewed by comparing diagnostic information on the scout view with that provided by the correlative CT study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two radiologists blinded to history and CT findings reviewed retrospectively 2032 scout views. All cases with major findings (defined as any abnormality that would prompt additional diagnostic tests or require management) were correlated with the CT study, other imaging study, or medical record when necessary by a third radiologist to determine the validity of t

Covered vs. uncovered stents for transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The first studies comparing covered stents (CS) and bare stents (BS) to achieve Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) were in favor of CS, but only one randomized study has been performed. Our aim was to compare the primary patency of TIPS performed with CS and BS. METHODS: The study was planned as a multicenter, pragmatic (with centers different in size and experience), randomized, single-blinded (with blinding of patients only), parallel group trial. The primary endpoint was TIPS dysfunction defined as either a portocaval gradient ⩾12mmHg, or a stent lumen

Stellate ganglion block promotes recovery of Bell's palsy in patients with diabetes mellitus.

CONCLUSION: Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is effective for treatment of Bell's palsy in patients with diabetes mellitus. BACKGROUND: Corticosteroids are widely used for treatment of Bell's palsy in patients with diabetes mellitus but may induce complications like hyperglycemia, which calls for an alternative therapy. This study aimed to ascertain the effect of SGB on Bell's palsy in patients with diabetes mellitus. METHODS: This randomized and single-blinded clinical trial involved 96 diabetic patients with Bell's palsy that were randomly divided into a control group (n = 48) and a treatment

Prospective, randomized, single blinded pilot study of a new FlatWire based sternal closure system.

BACKGROUND: Unstable steel wire cerclage following open heart surgery may result in increased pain, sternal cut-through, non-union, or dehiscence. These complications lead to longer hospital stays, increased cost, higher morbidity, and patient dissatisfaction. The Figure 8 FlatWire Sternal Closure System is a new construct which is a simple, intuitive, and inexpensive alternative for primary sternal repair following open heart surgery. Prior bench-top testing of FlatWire has demonstrated superior strength and stiffness compared to traditional steel wire. We present our initial experience in a

Matrix-induced autologous mesenchymal stem cell implantation versus matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation in the treatment of chondral defects of the knee: a 2-year randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Cell-based strategies that combine in vitro- expanded autologous chondrocytes with matrix scaffolds are currently preferred for full-thickness cartilage lesions of the knee ≥2 cm(2). Although this approach is reasonable, continuing advances in the field of cartilage repair will further expand the options available to improve outcomes. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: In the present clinical study, we compared the outcomes of matrix-induced autologous mesenchymal stem cell implantation (m-AMI) with matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (m-ACI) for the treatment of isolated chondral

Distal radial traction radiographs: interobserver and intraobserver reliability compared with computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Distal radial fracture characterization with standard radiographs has been consistently poor, leading to a widespread use of computed tomography (CT) with this injury. Traction radiographs have recently been shown to improve interobserver reliability for fracture characterization and treatment. Our goal was to compare five traction radiographs and CT images to evaluate the interobserver and intraobserver reliability of individual fracture fragment identification, the correct identification of fracture fragments on CT imaging compared with traction images, and the consistency of tre

Vaccine for prevention of mild and moderate-to-severe influenza in children.

BACKGROUND: Commonly used trivalent vaccines contain one influenza B virus lineage and may be ineffective against viruses of the other B lineage. We evaluated the efficacy of a candidate inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (QIV) containing both B lineages. METHODS: In this multinational, phase 3, observer-blinded study, we randomly assigned children 3 to 8 years of age, in a 1:1 ratio, to receive the QIV or a hepatitis A vaccine (control). The primary end point was influenza A or B confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR). Secondary end points were rt-PCR-confirmed, mo

Effects of conventional versus multimodal vestibular rehabilitation on functional capacity and balance control in older people with chronic dizziness from vestibular disorders: design of a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: There are several protocols designed to treat vestibular disorders that focus on habituation, substitution, adaptation, and compensation exercises. However, protocols that contemplate not only vestibular stimulation but also other components that are essential to the body balance control in older people are rare. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of two vestibular rehabilitation protocols (conventional versus multimodal) on the functional capacity and body balance control of older people with chronic dizziness due to vestibular disorders. The relationship between antipsychotic D2 occupancy and change in frontal metabolism and working memory : A dual [(11)C]raclopride and [(18) F]FDG imaging study with aripiprazole.

RATIONALE: The effects of aripiprazole on cognitive function are obscure, possibly due to the difficulty in disentangling the specific effects on cognitive function from effects secondary to the improvement of other schizophrenic symptoms. This prompts the necessity of using an intermediate biomarker relating the drug effect on the brain to change in cognitive function. OBJECTIVES: To explore the effect of aripiprazole on cognitive function, we measured changes in frontal metabolism as an intermediate biomarker and sought to determine its relationship with D2 receptor occupancy and changes in

Lack of effect of nitrogen dioxide exposure on heart rate variability in patients with stable coronary heart disease and impaired left ventricular systolic function.

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiological studies of air pollution on cardiovascular health show associations of cardiac mortality and admissions with exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) at low concentrations. These associations could be causal or NO(2) could be acting as a surrogate measure for another air pollutant, most likely ultrafine particles. No studies of cardiac susceptibility to acute exposure to NO(2) have been undertaken. METHODS: Randomised controlled exposures to NO(2) (400 ppb for 1 h) and air in subjects with coronary heart disease and impaired left ventricular systolic function not takin
