A Ketogenic Diet and the Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by stereotyped behavior and deficits in communication and social interaction. There are no curative treatments for children with ASD. The ketogenic diet (KD) is a high-fat, appropriate-protein, and low-carbohydrate diet that mimics the fasting state of the body and is proven beneficial in drug-resistant epilepsy and some other brain diseases. An increasing number of studies demonstrated that a KD improved autistic behavior, but the underlying mechanisms are not known. We reviewed the neuroprotective role of a KD in ASD, which is likely mediated v

Needle phobia: etiology, adverse consequences, and patient management.

Needle phobia has profound health, dental, societal, and legal implications, and severe psychological, social, and physiologic consequences. There is genetic evidence for the physiologic response to needle puncture, and a significant familial psychological component, showing evidence of inheritance. Needle phobia is also a learned behavior. The dental practitioner must recognize patients with needle phobia before the administration of local anesthetics to identify patients who are potentially reactive and to prevent untoward sequelae. Needle phobia is highly associated with avoidance behavior,

The reliability, validity, and unique contributions of self-report by adolescents receiving treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Participants were 36 adolescents diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who completed a summer treatment program. Self-report measures included the IOWA Conners Inattention/Overactivity and Oppositional/Defiant subscales, peer and staff interaction ratings, and a daily guess if the placebo or methylphenidate was given during a double-blind medication trial. Self-reports were reliable, and some of the self-report measures distinguished between placebo and methylphenidate conditions. However, the self-report measures exhibited weak correlations with observed frequencies o

Assessing risk factors for transmission of infection.

Commonly used measures of effect, such as risk ratios and odds ratios, may be quite biased when used to assess the effect of factors that alter transmission risks given exposure to infected individuals. This is demonstrated in a simulation model involving a higher-risk behavior and a lower-risk behavior affecting the sexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus. The bias arises because population contact patterns between higher-risk and lower-risk persons change their relative probabilities of exposure to an infected individual as an epidemic progresses. The assessment of contact patter

Evidence-based social skills training for adolescents with autism spectrum disorders: the UCLA PEERS program.

The present study examines the efficacy and durability of the PEERS Program, a parent-assisted social skills group intervention for high-functioning adolescents with ASD. Results indicate that teens receiving PEERS significantly improved their social skills knowledge, social responsiveness, and overall social skills in the areas of social communication, social cognition, social awareness, social motivation, assertion, cooperation, and responsibility, while decreasing autistic mannerisms and increasing the frequency of peer interactions. Independent teacher ratings revealed significant improvem

The everyday routines of families of children with autism: examining the impact of sensory processing difficulties on the family.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experience of how sensory-related behaviors of children with autism affected family routines. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with four primary caregivers regarding the meaning and impact of their child's sensory-related behaviors on family routines that occurred inside and outside the home. Findings indicated that sensory behaviors are one factor that limited family participation in work, family and leisure activities; and that parents employed specific strategies to manage individual and family routines in ligh

Humor as aggression: effects of motivation on hostility expressed in humor appreciation.

In 4 studies, the authors examined the hypothesis that relative to primed autonomy motivation, primed control would increase enjoyment of hostile (compared with nonhostile) humor as assessed by self-reported enjoyment and aversiveness and by nonverbal behavior. Results confirmed the hypothesis. Furthermore, initial state hostility moderated the effect such that high-hostility participants who were primed with control motivation especially enjoyed hostile humor. The 2 final studies showed that the effect was mediated by implicit aggression such that the combination of high initial state hostili

Primed for change: facilitating factors in problem gambling treatment.

To successfully facilitate the treatment of problem gambling, change processes should be examined in order to identify those variables that differentiate good versus poor treatment outcomes. The current study explored the change facilitating effects of certain characteristics or conditions of an individual being treated: emotional support, instrumental support, emotional awareness, GA involvement, and depressed affect. These conditions were hypothesized to be predictive of a change-oriented mindset (i.e., "resources for change") measured by abstinence self-efficacy, motivation for change, and

An overview of swearing and its impact on mental health nursing practice.

Swearing is a subject largely ignored in academic circles but impossible to ignore in the workplace. Nurses encounter swearing from patients and their carers, staff and managers and use swearwords in communication with each other. Language is the major tool of the mental health nurse and swearing an aspect of language frequently used in situations of intense emotion. This paper provides an overview of the historical, legal and cultural aspects of swearing in an Australian context in order to assist nurses in their practice.

Uganda's HIV prevention success: the role of sexual behavior change and the national response.

There has been considerable interest in understanding what may have led to Uganda's dramatic decline in HIV prevalence, one of the world's earliest and most compelling AIDS prevention successes. Survey and other data suggest that a decline in multi-partner sexual behavior is the behavioral change most likely associated with HIV decline. It appears that behavior change programs, particularly involving extensive promotion of "zero grazing" (faithfulness and partner reduction), largely developed by the Ugandan government and local NGOs including faith-based, women's, people-living-with-AIDS and o

Relationship between maternal church attendance and adolescent mental health and social functioning.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared maternal attendance at religious services with standard demographic characteristics such as race, type of religion, and mother's education in terms of their relative association with the behavioral and social functioning of young adolescents. METHODS: The Child Health and Illness Profile--Adolescent Edition and the Children's Depression Inventory were used to screen 445 youths age 11 through 13 who were randomly selected from two public middle schools in Baltimore. Based on the findings, the investigators selected a sample of 143 youths in which approximately tw

Internalizing active aging norms: Self-attributed responsibility as a mediator linking prescriptive views on aging to late-life preparation.

OBJECTIVES: Older adults face prescriptive expectations about aging, including active aging norms emphasizing physical activity, social engagement, and autonomy. While previous research has linked active aging norms to health-related and social behaviors, no studies to date have examined whether and how these norms are related to proactive, future-oriented behaviors such as late-life preparation. Drawing on theories of norm internalization, this study examines self-attributed responsibility for aging preparation as a mediator linking active aging norms to late-life preparation. METHODS: Data

The Ameliorative Effect of Spirulina platensis as Add-On Therapy to Risperidone on Valproic Acid-Induced Autism in Rat Pups: Implication of Oxidative Stress, Inflammatory, and ERK-1/2 Signaling Pathway.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication deficits and repetitive behaviors. Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), a teratogenic antiepileptic agent, is known to induce ASD-like symptoms in animal models. This study aimed to assess the therapeutic effects of Spirulina platensis (SP) and Risperidone (Ris) in a VPA-induced autism rat model. Pregnant Wistar rats received a single intraperitoneal dose of VPA (600 mg/kg) on gestational day 12.5. Male offspring received SP (200 mg/kg, p.o.), and/or Ris (1 mg/kg, p.o.), and combination

Women's Self-Management of Urinary Incontinence: A Qualitative Study Using the Proactive Health Behavior Framework.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common condition among middle-aged and older women. Despite well-established international guidelines for conservative treatment, patient adherence remains sub-optimal, highlighting a discrepancy between recommendations and practical implementation. This study is aimed at exploring the multidimensional factors influencing the self-management behaviors of patients with UI using the Proactive Health Behavior (PHB) framework. METHODS: A descriptive, qualitative design was used in this study. Guided by the PHB, semi-structured face-to-fa

Help-Seeking Among Women Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence in Thailand: A Qualitative Research Study.

Limited evidence exists on help-seeking, access, and use of support services and resources by survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Thailand. This study uses qualitative descriptive methods to explore help-seeking behaviors of adult (18 years and older) Thai women who reported IPV in the past 6 months. Twenty-seven women were recruited through social media and consented to participate in a confidential interview conducted via telephone. The interview data was analyzed using content analysis. Findings found that survivors' perceptions of help-seeking varied, with participants recogniz

Loneliness as neurobehavioral issue in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: In elderly people loneliness represents a risk factor for dementia and may negatively impact on mental and physical health. The specific contribute of loneliness to cognitive and behavioral functioning have not yet been determined in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Our hypothesis was that loneliness may be related to motor dysfunction with a negative impact on cognitive and behavioral decline, possibly related to specific cortical involvement. METHODS: In 200 ALS patients (ALSpts) and 50 healthy controls (HCs) we measured loneliness, mood, and quality of life (QoL). ALSpts und

Positive emotions co-experienced with strangers and acquaintances predict COVID-19 vaccination intentions through prosocial tendencies.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of vaccination depends on its widespread adoption, making vaccine uptake not just a personal health behavior but also a prosocial one. Previous research has shown that everyday moments of co-experienced positive emotions (positivity resonance) are associated with higher prosocial tendencies, and these moments, in turn, prospectively predict people's pandemic hygiene behaviors. Yet, limited research has explored how moments of positivity resonance may have predicted greater COVID-19 vaccine intentions during the early months of the pandemic. METHODS: We longitudinally

Postpartum scarcity-adversity inflicts sex-specific cerebellar adaptations and reward behaviors in adolescence.

Early life adversity in the form of poor postnatal care is a major developmental stressor impacting behavior later in life. Previous studies have shown the impact of early life stress on neurobehavioral abnormalities. Specifically, research has demonstrated how limited bedding and nesting (LBN) materials can cause behavioral deficits in adulthood. There is, however, a limited understanding of how LBN influences sex-specific neurobehavioral adaptation in adolescence, a developmental stage susceptible to psychiatric diseases including substance use disorder. LBN and stress-naive c57BL/6 adolesce
