A 62-year-old right-handed man gradually experienced increasing difficulty with speech and manual dexterity. He had apraxia of speech, buccofacial apraxia, and complex limb apraxia as well as terminal dementia. At autopsy, focal cortical atrophy, neuronal loss, and neuropil rarefaction in the second and third cortical layers were most prominent in the left opercular, lower precentral, superior parietal, and left temporal pole. Numerous Pick bodies were diffusely present in the temporal and posterior frontal lobes and, to a lesser degree, in the superior parietal lobule. This report demonstrate

Fifteen patients with bilateral hemisphere brain injury secondary to thromboembolic stroke or trauma were evaluated for depression, cognitive impairment, and functional physical impairment. Analysis of CT scans and standardized mood scales revealed that patients with left anterior brain injury were significantly more depressed than patients without such injury. Depression severity was directly and significantly correlated with left lesion proximity to the frontal pole. Left lesion age, lesion temporal sequence, right lesion location, cognitive impairment, and functional physical impairment did

Two cases of presenile dementia were presented. Both showed "stehende Redensarten" and aphasia. Histopathologically, besides Pick features--temporal lobe atrophy, fibrillary gliosis of the temporal white matter and neuronal loss in the 2--3 cortical layers--, Alzheimer features--neurofibrillary tangles and granulo-vacuolar degeneration--were found in both cases. But no senile plaques were found. Pseudocalcerous deposits were observed in the cerebral cortex, basal ganglia and cerebellum. Atypical cases with both Pick's and Alzheimer's diseases in the literature were classified into four groups

Self-processing in autism affects social interactions. By choosing 8 fMRI studies of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) self-processing, this study used ALE meta-analysis to investigate the brain underpinnings of self-processing in ASD. The findings revealed the following: (1) The capacity to make self-other distinctions and mirroring in social interactions is impacted by inadequate activation of brain areas of the mirror neuron system in ASD, which in turn impairs social interactions. (2) ASD activated more brain regions in self-processing than typically developing (TD) individuals. TD individual

Frontotemporal lobe abnormalities are linked to neuropsychiatric disorders and cognition, but the role of cellular heterogeneity between temporal lobe (TL) and frontal lobe (FL) in the vulnerability to genetic risk factors remains to be elucidated. We integrated single-nucleus transcriptome analysis in 'fresh' human FL and TL with genetic susceptibility, gene dysregulation in neuropsychiatric disease and psychoactive drug response data. We show how intrinsic differences between TL and FL contribute to the vulnerability of specific cell types to both genetic risk factors and psychoactive drugs.

BACKGROUND: Craniocerebral gunshot wounds (CGW) are the most lethal injuries of the cranium. CGW is mostly secondary to military conflicts but may also be seen in civilian life. These injuries also have severe consequences, such as epilepsy, hydrocephalus, infection and late-term cognitive dysfunctions. The present study aims to present our series of CGW and to discuss the prognostic factors and consequences of these injuries.
METHODS: The data of patients who were treated in our department for CGW between 2011 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed in this study. The injury type, wounding si

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia is a multidimensional personality construct.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the neuronal correlates of each alexithymia dimension by examining the regional homogeneity (ReHo) of intrinsic brain activity in a resting situation.
METHODS: From university freshmen, students with alexithymia and non-alexithymia were recruited. Their alexithymic traits were assessed using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20. The ReHo was examined using a resting-state functional MRI approach.
RESULTS: This study suggests significant group differences in ReHo in multiple brain regio

The death of a 76-year-old man with heart disease as a result of the injection of an excessive dose of lidocaine is presented. The patient was given 5 ml of 10% lidocaine hydrochloride (500 mg) intravenously instead of 2.5 ml of 2% lidocaine hydrochloride (50mg) in order to treat repeated paroxysmal ventricular arrhythmia. Immediately following the injection the patient had tonic clonic seizures and complete cardiopulmonary arrest followed. Although resuscitation attempts once successfully restarted his pulse and spontaneous respiration, the patient died on the eighth day after the injection.

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities, such as increased theta power, have been proposed as biomarkers for neurocognitive disorders. Advancements in amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) imaging have enhanced our understanding of the pathology of neurocognitive disorders, such as amyloid deposition. However, much remains unknown regarding the relationship between regional amyloid deposition and EEG abnormalities. This study aimed to explore the relationship between regional EEG abnormalities and amyloid deposition in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

OBJECTIVE: Even with successful combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), patients with human immunodeficiency virus positive (HIV+) continue to present structural alterations and neuropsychological impairments. The purpose of this study is to investigate structural brain connectivity alterations and identify the hub regions in HIV+ patients with fully suppressed plasma viral loads.
METHODS: In this study, we compared the brain structural connectivity in 48 patients with HIV+ treated with a combination of antiretroviral therapy and 48 healthy controls, using diffusion tensor imaging. Further

BACKGROUND: Precision medicine for Alzheimer's disease (AD) requires the development of a robust management framework grounded in individualized disease staging systems. To date, only a limited number of studies have supplemented the existing AD staging systems.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 7491 MRI examinations from five independent cohorts. We used a novel pseudo-healthy synthesis method to capture individualized brain atrophy patterns. An individualized brain atrophy score (BAS) was computed from the 30 regions with the most severe brain atrophy and used to stratify participa

OBJECTIVE: Experiential phenomena (EP), such as illusions and complex hallucinations, are vivid experiences created in one's mind. They can occur spontaneously as epileptic auras or can be elicited by electrical brain stimulation (EBS) in patients undergoing presurgical evaluation for drug-resistant epilepsy. Previous work suggests that EP arise from activation of different nodes within interconnected neural networks mainly in the temporal lobes. Yet, the anatomical extent of these neural networks has not been described and the question of lateralization of EP has not been fully addressed. To

BACKGROUND: The question of whether Asperger syndrome can be distinguished from autism has attracted much debate and may even incur delay in diagnosis and intervention. Accordingly, there has been a proposal for Asperger syndrome to be subsumed under autism in the forthcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, in 2013. One approach to resolve this question has been to adopt the criterion of absence of clinically significant language or cognitive delay--essentially, the "absence of language delay." To our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis of magnetic

A milestone of human language faculty is to communicate with syntactically complex sentence structures. Although various syntactic complexity representations have been studied in language comprehension, a clear framework that systematically organizes syntactic complexity into different levels and the corresponding neural substrates during sentence production are largely unknown. Therefore, this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study investigated the neural substrates of syntactic processing during production responsive to a well-organized hierarchy of syntactic complexity: Sentence

One of the distinctive features of the human visual system is the presence in occipito-temporal cortex (OTC) of regions that show preferential activation to specific categories of visual objects. To understand how this selectivity relates to categorization behavior, studies have employed a distance-to-bound (DTB) approach, where multivariate brain activity is used to estimate a decision boundary, from which behavioral performance can be predicted. Using this approach, correlations have been found between activity in OTC and behavioral performance when carrying out certain categorization tasks.

BACKGROUND: While changes in sleep architecture during depression and mania are well-established, the extent to which they persist during euthymia in Bipolar Disorders (BD) remains unclear. Here we investigate pre-sleep cortical arousal and its correlation with sleep architecture and subjective sleep quality in BD patients.
METHODS: Subjective sleep measures and whole-night, high-density sleep electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were obtained from 16 euthymic BD patients and 16 age and sex-matched healthy control subjects. Sleep architecture was determined according to standard guidelines

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations are a major burden for patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder and are often resistant to pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the temporo-parietal cortex has been proposed as a treatment for persistent auditory verbal hallucinations. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of bilateral continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS), a brief and efficient form of rTMS, in adults with auditory verbal hallucinations versus sham cTBS.
METHODS: This multicentre, randomised, sham-
