The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory A-Trait Scale: dimensions and their generalization.

The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory A-Trait scale was administered to 152 female and 158 male students. Principal-components factor analyses yielded four orthogonal factors for each sex. The findings indicated that factor pattern comparisons should be made prior to pooling data across sex for psychometric investigations. Also, limited support was found for the generalization of dimensions across sex and samples both within and between cultures.

BNC210, a negative allosteric modulator of the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, demonstrates anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects in rodents.

This work describes the characterization of BNC210 (6-[(2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)amino]-1-ethyl-3-(4-morpholinylcarbonyl)-1,8-naphthyridin-4(1H)-one), a selective, small molecule, negative allosteric modulator (NAM) of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7 nAChR). With the aim to discover a non-sedating, anxiolytic compound, BNC210 was identified during phenotypic screening of a focused medicinal chemistry library using the mouse Light Dark (LD) box to evaluate anxiolytic-like activity and the mouse Open Field (OF) (dark) test to detect sedative and/or motor effects. BNC210 exhibited anxio

The child's perspective on discomfort during medical research procedures: a descriptive study.

OBJECTIVE: The evaluation of discomfort in paediatric research is scarcely evidence-based. In this study, we make a start in describing children's self-reported discomfort during common medical research procedures and compare this with discomfort during dental check-ups which can be considered as a reference level of a 'minimal discomfort' medical procedure. We exploratory study whether there are associations between age, anxiety-proneness, gender, medical condition, previous experiences and discomfort. We also describe children's suggestions for reducing discomfort. DESIGN: Cross-sectional d

Adapting a Mobile Health App for Smoking Cessation in Black Adults With Anxiety Through an Analysis of the Mobile Anxiety Sensitivity Program Proof-of-Concept Trial: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: At least half of smokers make a serious quit attempt each year, but Black adults who smoke are less likely than White adults who smoke to quit smoking successfully. Black adults who smoke and have high anxiety sensitivity (an individual difference factor implicated in smoking relapse and culturally relevant to Black adults) are even less successful. The Mobile Anxiety Sensitivity Program for Smoking (MASP) is a smoking cessation smartphone app culturally tailored to Black adults who smoke to increase smoking cessation rates by targeting anxiety sensitivity. OBJECTIVE: This study e

Sleep disturbance and associated factors among Nigerian adults living with HIV in the dolutegravir era.

Sleep disturbance is common among persons living with HIV (PLWH) causing significant health impacts. Nigeria recently switched from efavirenz to dolutegravir (DTG) for first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study aimed to assess the prevalence of sleep disturbance and to determine factors associated with sleep disturbance among treatment-experienced PLWH. Using a cross-sectional study design and systematic random sampling, 300 participants were recruited from the Infectious Diseases Institute, Ibadan, Nigeria (IDI). Interviewer administered questionnaire was used to collect data regardi

[Interest of computer-based cognitive behavioral stress management. Feasability of the Seren@ctif program].

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-behavioural stress management programs have been studied in many countries. Many reports have shown beyond a doubt their efficacy to reduce perceived stress, anxiety symptoms and to improve quality of life of patients. Considering the very large number of people who could benefit from such programs but are unable to reach them, self-help programs have been offered. First presented as books (bibliotherapy), these programs then became enriched by computing and digital supports. Regrettably, many of the programs of stress management based on the Cognitive behavioural thera

Mild traumatic brain injury increases vulnerability to post-traumatic stress disorder in rats and the possible role of hippocampal DNA methylation.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical studies have established that patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are at an increased risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suggesting that mTBI increases vulnerability to subsequent PTSD onset. However, preclinical animal studies investigating this link remain scarce, and the specific biological mechanism through which mTBI increases vulnerability to PTSD is largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, we modeled mTBI in rats using a mild, closed-head, weight-drop injury, followed 72 h later by exposure to single prolonged stress (SPS) to

Conspecific Presence Promotes Social Buffering, Restores Social Reward, and Enhances Spatial Navigation in a Ketamine-Induced Model of Schizophrenia in Mice.

Despite extensive research on the effects of enriched environments in mouse models of psychiatric disorders, the role of social context remains poorly explored. Therefore, we assessed the impact of a conspecific during the evaluation of negative and cognitive symptoms in a mouse model of schizophrenia (SCZ). Male C57BL/6J mice received daily injections of ketamine (25 mg/kg) or vehicle. Behavioral testing was conducted with mice either alone or in dyads of varying familiarity. Anxiety-like behavior and habituation were assessed using the 3D maze test (3DM). Social reward was measured with a so

Inhibition of prefrontal cortex parvalbumin interneurons mitigates behavioral and physiological sequelae of chronic stress in male mice.

Chronic stress leads to hypofunction of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), mechanisms of which remain to be determined. Enhanced activation of GABAergic of parvalbumin (PV) expressing interneurons (INs) is thought to play a role in stress-induced prefrontal inhibition. In this study, we tested whether chemogenetic inhibition of mPFC PV INs after chronic stress can rescue chronic stress-related behavioral and physiological phenotypes. Mice underwent 2 weeks of chronic variable stress (CVS) followed by a battery of behavioral tests known to be affected by chronic stress exposure, e.g. an open

Sevoflurane exerts antidepressant-like effects via the BDNF-TrkB pathway.

Depression has emerged as the predominant psychiatric affliction affecting individuals. Prior research has substantiated the antidepressant properties exhibited by numerous anesthetics. Sevoflurane, a widely utilized inhalant anesthetic in clinical practice, remains relatively uncharted in terms of its specific antidepressant effects. In this study, we used open field test, forced swimming test and novelty-suppressed feeding test to investigate the anxiety and depression-like behaviors in C57BL/6 mice following the inhalation of sevoflurane. We then used western blotting to scrutinized the exp

Hindbrain Stimulation Modulates Object Recognition Discrimination Efficiency and Hippocampal Synaptic Connections.

(1) Background: The cerebellum is well known to have functionalities beyond the control of motor function. However, brain stimulation studies have not explored the potential of this region to impact downstream processes which are imperative to multiple neurological conditions. Our study aimed to look at preliminary evidence that hindbrain-targeted repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in mice could alter motor, cognitive and anxiety measures; (2) Methods: Male B6129SF2/J mice (n = 16) were given rTMS (n = 9) over lambda at 10 Hz for 10 min or Sham (n = 7) for 14 consecutive days.

Challenge Your Body, Challenge Your Mind: the Combined Effect of Fitness Level and Stress Appraisal on Stress Responses and Subsequent Cognitive Performance.

BACKGROUND: Because of the health issues associated with high stress levels, it is important to find new strategies to regulate stress response. Previous research has examined the separate effects of fitness level and stress reappraisal on the stress response, but the combination of both factors is unknown. The goal of the study was to examine the combined effects of fitness and stress appraisal on stress responses and cognitive performance following a stressful event. METHOD: On 2 separate days, 24 highly and poorly fit young men (Mage = 22.33, SD = 3.33) were exposed to a validated stress t

Memantine Attenuates Cognitive and Emotional Dysfunction in Mice with Sepsis-Associated Encephalopathy.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is the most common complication of sepsis, with increased morbidity and mortality. To date, there has still been no established pharmacological therapy. Memantine, as an NMDA (N-methyl-d-aspartate) receptor antagonist, exhibited neuroprotective effects against cognitive and emotional dysfunction in many disorders. We performed cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) inducing sepsis as the ideal animal model of SAE. CLP-induced septic mice were given a memantine treatment through intragastric administration. The novel object recognition test indicated that meman
