Randomized controlled clinical effectiveness of adjunct 660-nm light-emitting diode irradiation during non-surgical periodontal therapy.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The irradiation of 660-nm light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has exhibited potential to accelerate oral wound healing and prevent periodontal breakdown in rodents. This study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of 660-nm LEDs during non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). METHODS: Nineteen patients with at least one periodontitis-involved tooth in three quadrants received NSPT, and three protocols of LED light irradiation, including LED light irradiation from initial clinical assessment (T0) until the completion of scaling and root planning (T1) (LED01), LED light irradi

Comparative Clinical Evaluation between Conventional Periodontal Treatment and Full Mouth Disinfection.

Periodontal disease is chronic and multifactorial, affecting protection and support tissues of the tooth. Its onset is due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque, in which are found microorganisms, mainly Gram-negative, which stimulate the host cells and the production of immune-inflammatory molecules. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of two techniques of periodontal treatment through clinical parameters and laboratory tests. For this, 42 patients were randomly evaluated and divided into three groups of 14 patients each: Group 1 (control) - periodontally

A Comparative Evaluation of Gustafson's Formula and New Formula for Age Estimation in India--A Forensic Study.

The choice to use teeth for age determination is well accepted due to their longevity ability of being resilient to change. The total of 228 extracted teeth collected from the patients visited to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, NIMS Dental College, Jaipur, the teeth were without dental fillings and without and/or cavity selected. The known age was from 21 to 70 years with the average age of 43.46 years. For age estimation the method according to Gustafson was used. Every tooth was subject to longitudinal section of the midpulpal area. The following dental parameters were stud

Indentation as a technique to assess the mechanical properties of fallback foods.

A number of living primates feed part-year on seemingly hard food objects as a fallback. We ask here how hardness can be quantified and how this can help understand primate feeding ecology. We report a simple indentation methodology for quantifying hardness, elastic modulus, and toughness in the sense that materials scientists would define them. Suggested categories of fallback foods-nuts, seeds, and root vegetables-were tested, with accuracy checked on standard materials with known properties by the same means. Results were generally consistent, but the moduli of root vegetables were overesti

CT features of alveolitis and sinusitis in horses.

Sinusitis is a common disorder in horses and may result from trauma, dental diseases, or space-occupying lesions. Radiography can only provide a limited amount of information. Computed tomography (CT) has been documented as an alternative imaging method. Eighteen horses (mostly Warmblood) with signs of chronic sinusitis were examined preoperatively with CT to assist in diagnosis of the underlying cause. There was a group of common CT features in horses with dental disease and sinusitis. The first molar was the most frequently affected maxillary cheek tooth. Hypoattenuation of the cementum, des

Healing response of human buccal gingival recessions treated with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membranes. A retrospective report.

Twenty-four (24) deep wide buccal gingival recessions were treated with ePTFE membrane according to guided tissue regeneration principles (GTR). Factors affecting the surgical outcome of the regenerative procedure were retrospectively analyzed. In 16 cases, the barrier membrane was used in conjunction with tetracycline root conditioning and fibrin-fibronectin system application, and 8 cases were treated with the membrane alone. Healing response was evaluated 12 months after surgery. Since no difference was observed between the two treatment protocols, all available data were grouped. Mean rece

Application of Lamendin's adult dental aging technique to a diverse skeletal sample.

Lamendin et al. (1) proposed a technique to estimate age at death for adults by analyzing single-rooted teeth. They expressed age as a function of two factors: translucency of the tooth root and periodontosis (gingival regression). In their study, they analyzed 306 singled rooted teeth that were extracted at autopsy from 208 individuals of known age at death, all of whom were considered as having a French ancestry. Their sample consisted of 135 males, 73 females, 198 whites, and 10 blacks. The sample ranged in age from 22 to 90 years of age. By using a simple formulae (A = 0.18 x P + 0.42 x T

Sealing properties of mineral trioxide aggregate orthograde apical plugs and root fillings in an in vitro apexification model.

One-visit mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apexification is gaining in popularity over the use of calcium hydroxide barriers. This study examined the sealing properties of two MTA apexification procedures using an in vitro apexification model. White MTA was introduced into instrumented single-rooted canals with standardized artificially created open apices to form 3- to 5-mm-thick orthograde apical plugs or complete orthograde fillings of the root segments. The remaining canal spaces in the former group were backfilled with thermoplasticized gutta-percha without a sealer. A Flodec fluid filtra

Modified coronally advanced flap for multiple anterior gingival recessions: Case report.

BACKGROUND: The frontal envelope coronally advanced flap (CAF), designed for multiple adjacent gingival recessions (MAGR) of the anterior maxilla, involves tunneling of the midline papilla. However, when treating frontal and lateral MAGR in a single session, the tunneled midline papilla can act as a fixed point, which may limit coronal advancement or lead to mucosal folds in the gingival margin. METHODS: This case report introduces a modification of the CAF technique in which a V-shaped split-thickness surgical papilla is elevated at the midline to enhance flap mobility. Two patients with com

Accuracy of Dynamic and Static Navigated Endodontic Microsurgery Using Single Vertical Incision: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic navigation (DN) and static navigation (SN) in endodontic microsurgery (EMS) have been shown to improve the precision of osteotomy and root-end resection (RER). However, the impact of minimal incisions on DN- and SN-guided EMS remains unclear. This study assessed the accuracy of DN and SN in EMS performed via a single vertical incision at the apex (SVIA), and identified technique-specific accuracy predictors. METHODS: A retrospective analysis included 60 teeth treated with SVIA EMS, comprising 30 osteotomies and RERs each in the SN and DN groups. Preoperative variables - se
