Improving Naming Abilities Among Healthy Young-Old Adults Using Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive tool to facilitate brain plasticity and enhance language abilities. Our study aims to search for a potential beneficial influence of tDCS on a cognitive linguistic task of naming which found to decline during aging. A group of fifteen healthy old adults [Formula: see text] were tested in naming 50 pictures of objects. Each subject participated in two sessions spanning on a one week period. One session included active tDCS stimulation and the other sham-placebo like stimulation. Subjects were blinded to stimulation type. During the

An RCT Evaluating the Effects of Skills Training and Medication Type on Work Outcomes Among Patients With Schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Although supported employment increases job acquisition for people with serious mental illness, data on participants' job tenure have been variable. This study evaluated the effects of a standardized work skills training program (the Workplace Fundamentals Module [WPFM]) on job tenure and other work outcomes among individuals receiving individual placement and support (IPS). The effects of two atypical antipsychotic medications on side effects were also tested. The primary hypothesis tested was that participants in IPS plus WPFM would have increased job tenure compared with those en

The Creation of a Biocontainment Unit at a Tertiary Care Hospital. The Johns Hopkins Medicine Experience.

In response to the 2014-2015 Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa, Johns Hopkins Medicine created a biocontainment unit to care for patients infected with Ebola virus and other high-consequence pathogens. The unit team examined published literature and guidelines, visited two existing U.S. biocontainment units, and contacted national and international experts to inform the design of the physical structure and patient care activities of the unit. The resulting four-bed unit allows for unidirectional flow of providers and materials and has ample space for donning and doffing personal prot

Bedside pleural procedures by pulmonologists and non-pulmonologists: a 3-year safety audit.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pleural procedures such as tube thoracostomy and chest aspirations are commonly performed and carry potential risks of visceral organ injury, pneumothorax and bleeding. In this context limited information exists on the complication rates when non-pulmonologists perform ultrasound-guided bedside pleural procedures. Bedside pleural procedures in our university hospital were audited to compare complication rates between pulmonologists and non-pulmonologists. METHODS: A combined safety approach using standardized training, pleural safety checklists and ultrasound-guidanc

Preventive counseling for chronic disease: missed opportunities in a community mental health center.

BACKGROUND: The tremendous burden of cardiovascular risk among persons with serious mental illness underscores a critical need for prevention. Counseling by primary care clinicians increases patient smoking cessation, physical activity, and the consumption of fruits and vegetables. The extent to which community mental health clinicians counsel about cardiovascular risk factors has not been reported. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examines the rates of counseling about cardiovascular risk factors by mental health providers at an urban community mental health center (n = 154). Logistic reg

Cesarean section on maternal request: a societal and professional failure and symptom of a much larger problem.

The scientific literature was silent about a relationship of pelvic floor, urinary, and fecal incontinence and sexual issues with mode of birth until 1993, when Sultan et al's impressive rectal ultrasound studies were published. They showed that perirectal fibers were damaged in many vaginal births, but not as a result of a cesarean section. These findings helped to pioneer a new area of research, ultimately leading to increasing support among health professionals and the public that maternal choice of cesarean delivery could be justified-even that maternal choice and autonomous decision-makin

Risk of occupationally acquired illnesses from biological threat agents in unvaccinated laboratory workers.

Many vaccines for bioterrorism agents are investigational and therefore not available (outside of research protocol use) to all at-risk laboratory workers who have begun working with these agents as a result of increased interest in biodefense research. Illness surveillance data archived from the U.S. offensive biological warfare program (from 1943 to 1969) were reviewed to assess the impact of safety measures on disease prevention (including biosafety cabinets [BSCs]) before and after vaccine availability. Most laboratory-acquired infections from agents with higher infective doses (e.g., anth

In vivo amplified skills training: promoting generalization of independent living skills for clients with schizophrenia.

In Vivo Amplified Skills Training, IVAST, functions to bridge the gap between clinic-based skills training and use of social and independent living skills in everyday life for persons with schizophrenia and other serious and persistent mental illness. IVAST utilizes a specialist case manager who provides individualized, community-based teaching using behavioral techniques to promote clients' use of skills that were learned in classroom group sessions. The IVAST trainer also liaises with the client's psychiatrist and other clinic-based staff, family members, and community agencies to create opp

Constructing access to legal abortion services in Mexico City.

For the last three decades, government and health institutions have recognised that unsafe abortion is an important social and public health problem in Mexico. Although the Penal Code in every state defines at least one situation in which abortion is legal, access to legal abortion services is restricted for women throughout Mexico. In August 2000, the Mexico City Legislative Assembly reformed the Penal Code to include a wider range of grounds on which abortion is legal and added regulations to ensure access to legal abortion services in cases of rape and forced artificial insemination. The Me

Pressure support reduces inspiratory effort and dyspnea during exercise in chronic airflow obstruction.

Exercise training has been of limited success in patients with severe chronic airflow obstruction (CAO), in part because of the reduced ventilatory capacity and excessive dyspnea experienced. Pressure support (PS) is a new form of mechanical ventilation which can effectively assist ventilation when applied noninvasively to patients in acute respiratory failure. It was hypothesized that PS might also be used to improve exercise performance, and ultimately physical conditioning, in ambulatory patients with CAO undergoing exercise training. To begin to address this concept, the objectives of the

Agrichemical safety practices on farms in the western Cape.

In order to study agrichemical safety practices in a rural farming area in the western Cape, an audit of 45 randomly sampled farms was performed over 3 months in 1992. A response rate of 87% was achieved, and the survey results suggest that approximately 9% of permanent and 14% of seasonal farm workers are employed in jobs with potential exposure to agrichemicals. While protective equipment was widely available, gloves and masks were seldom used, with little enforcement or commercial support from the suppliers of the equipment. Farm workers receive little training on pesticide safety, but inte

The effects of strength training and centrifuge exposure on +Gz tolerance.

Weight training (WT) as a countermeasure to +Gz intolerance seems to be an accepted modality, but lacks convincing support in the research literature. This study examines factors associated with WT in an operational environment as a countermeasure to +Gz intolerance. Fourteen naval aviators were assigned to a WT group (n = 7) and a non-weight-trained control (NWT) group (n = 7). All subjects were tested before and after a 10-week training period for aerobic capacity (VO2max), dynamic muscular strength (Cybex II), body fat, gradual onset rate (GOR) for +Gz at a rate of +1 G.15 s-1, and finally

Electrostimulation of the median nerve in tetraplegics by means of implanted stimulators.

Since 1971 we studied on the possibility of utilization of implanted stimulators in tetraplegics caused by spinal cord injury of the cervical segment. Restoration to tetraplegic patients of the ability to perform some grasping functions of the hand may make them recover some independence and reduce the degree of disability. The examination conducted so far supplied much valuable information regarding reactions of a neuromuscular system at implanted stimulators as well the influence of systematic stimulation training on functions of the hand. This was not observed by other authors using transcu

Neuronal plasticity in the limbic system during classical conditioning of the rabbit nictitating membrane response. II: Septum and mammillary bodies.

Neuronal unit activity was recorded from several limbic system structures during classical conditioning of the rabbit nictiating membrane response to a tone CS. Air puff to cornea was used as a UCS. The present and past investigations of hippocampal activity using this paradigm show a neuronal plasticity which develops early in training, increases rapidly and shifts forward in time as behavioral conditioning develops. Recordings from the lateral septal region demonstrate the same within-trial pattern of unit discharge seen in hippocampus, indicating a projection of hippocampal plasticity over

Evaluation of the participatory rural appraisal training-hands-on for medical (PRATHaM) students.

BACKGROUND: Training in conventional community medicine often relies on didactic lectures and limited community engagement, which may not adequately improve understanding of students of contextual sociocultural and health-related problems. Participatory rural appraisal (PRA) is an effective and efficient approach to deliver community-based education. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the Participatory Rural Appraisal Training - Hands-on for Medical (PRATHaM) program for the first-year undergraduate medical students by assessing knowledge acquisition and obtaining feedback from

Impact of an Education Training Package to Anganwadi Workers for Improving Oral Health Knowledge Among Mother-Child Dyads in Kerala, India: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and child oral health remains a significant public health concern in India, contributing to early childhood caries, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and long-term health complications. Anganwadi workers (AWWs), under the Integrated Child Development Services Scheme (ICDS), are well positioned to promote preventive oral health behaviors. However, oral health education is not part of their core training. This protocol outlines an implementation research study to develop, deliver, and evaluate a contextualized oral health education training package through AWWs for mother-child dy
