Beyond the gut: Unraveling the multifaceted influence of microbiome on cardiovascular health.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Even while receiving adequate pharmacological treatment for their hypertension, people are nonetheless at greater risk for cardiovascular disease. There is growing evidence that the gut microbiota may have major positive and negative effects on blood pressure and illnesses related with it as more study into this topic is conducted. Trimethylamine n-oxide (TMAO) and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) are two major by-products of the gut microbiota. TMAO is involved in the formation of other coronary artery diseases, including a

[Optical coherence tomography angiography and cardiovascular diseases. An overview of the current knowledge].

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. The observability of retinal vessel changes in the context of CVD by funduscopy has been known for a long time. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel technique for noninvasive detailed imaging and quantification of the retinal microcirculation. The OCTA enables the visualization of vascular changes in a simple and well-reproducible way. Its applications are not limited to the field of ophthalmology. In recent years, several experimental and clinical studies have been published on vascular c

Leptin, a mediator of cardiac damage associated with obesity.

Obesity and excess of adipose tissue are associated with the development of cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. At the cardiac level, various morphological adaptations in cardiac structure and function occur in obese individuals. Different mechanisms linking obesity to these modifications have been postulated. Adipose tissue and epicardial fat releases a large number of cytokines and bioactive mediators such as leptin. Leptin circulates in proportion to body fat mass, thus serving as a satiety signal and informing central metabolic control centers as

Hypertension and hemodialysis: pathophysiology and outcomes in adult and pediatric populations.

Hypertension is prevalent in adult and pediatric end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis. Volume overload is a primary factor contributing to hypertension, and attaining true dry weight remains a priority for nephrologists. Other contributing factors to hypertension include activation of the sympathetic and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone systems, endothelial cell dysfunction, arterial stiffness, exposure to hypertensinogenic drugs, and electrolyte imbalances during hemodialysis. Epidemiologic studies in adults show that uncontrolled hypertension results in cardiovascular morbidity, but

Chronic fluoxetine treatment alters cardiovascular functions in unanesthetized rats.

In the present study, we investigated the effects induced by fluoxetine treatment (10 mg/kg) for either 1 or 21 consecutive days on arterial pressure and heart rate basal levels, baroreflex activity, hemodynamic responses to vasoactive agents and cardiovascular responses to acute restraint stress. Mild hypertension was observed after 21 days of treatment, but not after administration for 1 day. Moreover, chronic treatment affected the baroreflex control of heart rate, which was characterized by a reduced reflex tachycardia and an enhanced bradycardiac baroreflex response. The pressor responses

Tissue-specific targeting for cardiovascular gene transfer. Potential vectors and future challenges.

The introduction of genes to cardiovascular cells in vivo remains the major challenge for current gene therapy modalities. However, recent developments in retargeting adenoviral vectors are promising to improve transduction efficiency in the cardiovascular cells. After systemic application, most adenoviral vectors are trapped by the liver, hampering delivery to target cardiovascular tissues. Furthermore, a majority of vectors for vascular gene transfer utilizes strong heterologous viral promoters, such as CMV. A potential side effect related to the use of such vectors is the systemic organ tox

Mortality and cancer incidence in persons with numerical sex chromosome abnormalities: a cohort study.

Mortality and cancer incidence were assessed in a cohort of 1373 patients with numerical sex chromosome abnormalities diagnosed at three cytogenetics centres in Britain during 1959-90, and were compared with expectations from national rates. Four hundred patients with Turner's syndrome were followed, of whom 62 died, with a relative risk (RR) of death of 4.16 (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.22-5.39). Turner's syndrome patients had greatly raised risks of death from diseases of the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and genitourinary systems. One hundred and sixty three deaths occu

Periodontitis-atherosclerosis syndrome: an expanded model of pathogenesis.

The early reports of a linkage between periodontitis and atherosclerosis have garnered further support by additional data generated by several investigative teams in many different countries. The evidence continues to suggest that periodontitis may be an important risk factor or risk indicator for cardiovascular pathology for some individuals. The term periodontitis-atherosclerosis syndrome (PAS) is proposed as a new diagnostic term to describe this condition in these individuals. Current evidence, albeit preliminary in nature, which describes a cluster of clinical signs and symptoms that are

Comparing Cardiovascular Outcomes of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists Versus Metabolic Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity significantly increases cardiovascular risk through insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and systemic inflammation. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) are effective weight-loss interventions that may improve cardiovascular outcomes. However, evidence comparing the long-term cardiovascular benefits of GLP-1RAs versus MBS remains limited. We systematically compare the impact of GLP-1RAs versus MBS on cardiovascular outcomes, including major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and heart failure (HF) in pati

Beyond glycemic control: clinical cardiovascular effects of tirzepatide-a narrative review.

The risk of cardiovascular disease is significantly increased by both type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity through overlapping pathways involving insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, systemic inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Tirzepatide, the first dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, has shown significant glycemic and weight-reducing effects and is increasingly recognized as a cardiometabolic therapy that extends beyond glucose control. This narrative review summarizes clinical and translational evidence about the cardiov

Itaconate ameliorates cardiovascular inflammation in a mouse model of Kawasaki disease vasculitis - brief report.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD), a systemic vasculitis and the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children, stems from an uncontrolled inflammatory response that fails to resolve in up to 20% of IVIG-treated patients. This treatment resistance increases the risk of cardiovascular complications and highlights the need for more targeted therapeutics. METHODS: We used the Lactobacillus casei cell wall extract (LCWE) murine model of KD vasculitis to investigate the therapeutic potential of itaconate, an anti-inflammatory metabolite, in the pathogenesis of KD. The expression of aconitate

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio predicts coronary artery lesion severity and long-term cardiovascular mortality in patients with unstable angina pectoris.

OBJECTIVES: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), one of the composite biomarker of systemic inflammatory status, was proved promising in predicting clinical outcomes of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, there were no evidences that NLR was directly relative to the clinical outcomes of unstable angina pectoris (UAP). Therefore, this study was aimed to detect whether NLR could predict the coronary artery lesion severity (indicated as SYNTAX score) and clinical outcomes (especially long-term cardiovascular mortality) in patients with. METHODS: In the single-centre retrospective study, 411

Rationale, design and population description of the CREDENCE study: cardiovascular risk equations for diabetes patients from New Zealand and Chinese electronic health records.

The cardiovascular risk equations for diabetes patients from New Zealand and Chinese electronic health records (CREDENCE) study is a unique prospectively designed investigation of cardiovascular risk in two large contemporary cohorts of people with type 2 diabetes from New Zealand (NZ) and China. The study was designed to derive equivalent cardiovascular risk prediction equations in a developed and a developing country, using the same epidemiological and statistical methodology. Two similar cohorts of people with type 2 diabetes were identified from large general population studies in China an

The great opportunity of the andrological patient: cardiovascular and metabolic risk assessment and prevention.

Andrologists, cardiologists and diabetologists (and general practitioners) have the great opportunity to collaborate and find shared clinical workup for the benefit of a large number of men. Several evidence established a link between erectile dysfunction (ED), cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Not only these conditions share many risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms but also an emerging paradigm indicates that ED is, in fact, an independent marker of cardiovascular disease risk, CV events and CV mortality. However, there is no consensus on the best card

Arterial stiffness in adults with steady-state bronchiectasis: association with clinical indices and disease severity.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease are common co-morbidities in bronchiectasis and contribute substantially to disease burden and mortality. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), a measure of arterial stiffness, has a strong predictive value for cardiovascular event. We hypothesized that baPWV would be increased in steady-state bronchiectasis patients, and correlates with the degree of systemic inflammation and disease severity assessed with Bronchiectasis Severity Index and FACED scores. METHODS: Eighty patients with steady-state bronchiectasis and 80 age- and sex-matched controls were
