Dose-related effects of ketamine for antidepressant-resistant symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder in veterans and active duty military: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled multi-center clinical trial.

This study tested the efficacy of repeated intravenous ketamine doses to reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Veterans and service members with PTSD (n = 158) who failed previous antidepressant treatment were randomized to 8 infusions administered twice weekly of intravenous placebo (n = 54), low dose (0.2 mg/kg; n = 53) or standard dose (0.5 mg/kg; n = 51) ketamine. Participants were assessed at baseline, during treatment, and for 4 weeks after their last infusion. Primary analyses used mixed effects models. The primary outcome measure was the self-report PTSD Checklist fo

Using Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE) to Teach Neurology Residents to Disclose Prognosis after Hypoxic Ischemic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Neurologists need to be adept at disclosing prognosis and breaking bad news. Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE) allow trainees to practice these skills. METHODS: In 2017, in conjunction with the NYU School of Medicine Simulation Center, neurology faculty designed an OSCE case in which a resident had to inform a standardized patient (SP) her father had severe global hypoxic ischemic injury. The residents were surveyed on the experience using a Likert scale from 1 (worst) to 5 (best). The SP completed a behavioral anchored checklist and marked items as "not done," "pa

Burnout and posttraumatic stress symptoms in police officers exposed to traumatic events: the mediating role of ruminations.

PURPOSE: Police work carries the risk of burnout in the form of exhaustion and disengagement from work. Police officers are also exposed to traumatic events and the development of PTSD. The main aim of the cross-sectional study was to determine the mediating role played by rumination in the relationship between burnout and PTSD among police officers. It also examines whether burnout is a significant prognostic factor for PTSD symptoms. METHODS: Data were obtained from a sample of 120 police officers. Of these one hundred, mostly men (83%), aged 23-47 years (M = 33.06, SD = 5.61), confirmed th

Dysregulation profile (DP) as a transdiagnostic psychopathological factor in clinically referred children - comparisons between disorders and latent structure.

BACKGROUND: Dysregulation Profile (DP) describes the psychopathological construct of concurrent impairments in the ability to regulate emotion, behaviour, and cognition measured by the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). Such transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology play an important role in addition to core symptoms of psychiatric diagnosis in clinical practice. Evaluation of DP in children with different mental disorders may improve our understanding and treatment of both contents. METHODS: 911 clinically referred children between 6 and 18 years were investigated. The sample consisted of

Drinking to cope as a mechanism between sleep problems and heavy episodic drinking among trauma survivors.

Objective: Women who have experienced trauma report high rates of heavy episodic drinking (HED) and sleep problems. Prior work suggests that poor sleep exacerbates heavy alcohol use; however, potential mechanisms for this association are unclear. Consistent with the self-medication model, one possibility may be that women with a history of trauma are drinking at increased rates in order to cope with the affective consequences of poor sleep. To examine this possibility, the current study tested the role of drinking to cope motives as a mediator of prospective associations between sleep problems

Joint risk prediction for hazardous use of alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco among adolescents: A preliminary study using statistical and machine learning.

For some, substance use during adolescence may be a stepping stone on the way to substance use disorders in adulthood. Risk prediction models may help identify adolescent users at elevated risk for hazardous substance use. This preliminary analysis used cross-sectional data (n = 270, ages 13-18) from the baseline dataset of a randomized controlled trial intervening with adolescent alcohol and/or cannabis use. Models were developed for jointly predicting quantitative scores on three measures of hazardous substance use (Rutgers Alcohol Problems Index, Adolescent Cannabis Problem Questionnaire, a

Evidence of rehabilitation therapy in task-specific focal dystonia: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Task-specific dystonias are primary focal dystonias characterized by excessive muscle contractions producing abnormal postures during selective motor activities that often involve highly skilled, repetitive movements. Based on the idea of excessive motor excitability and aberrant sensorimotor integration in the pathophysiology of task-specific dystonia, sensorimotor retraining may hold promise. The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the available evidence about the role of rehabilitation therapy as a treatment for task-specific dystonia. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A

Variants in the Obesity-Linked FTO gene locus modulates psychopathological features of patients with Anorexia Nervosa.

Our aim was to determine whether variability in the fat mass obesity (FTO) gene locus, consistently related to obesity, affects the risk of eating disorders (ED) and/or the psychopathology displayed by these patients. We analyzed 26 tag-single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that capture FTO variability in 352 ED patients [233 with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and 119 with binge-eating] and 396 controls. Psychopathological symptoms and traits were evaluated by the Eating Disorders Inventory Test 2 (EDI-2) and Symptoms Checklist 90 Revised (SCL-90R) questionnaires. No associations were found for ED ri
