Deciphering ecological drivers and assembly mechanisms of sulfonamide-degrading bacteria in constructed wetlands.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are increasingly utilized for sulfonamide remediation, yet the ecological drivers governing sulfonamide-degrading bacteria (SDB) remain inadequately characterized. To systematically evaluate how oxygen and nutrient availability interact to shape SDB communities, this study classified CWs into three distinct functional types: high-dissolved-oxygen-high-nutrient (HD-HN), high-dissolved-oxygen-low-nutrient (HD-LN), and low-dissolved-oxygen-high-nutrient (LD-HN) systems. Analysis of medium-to-large CWs in South China demonstrated pervasive SDB colonization (relative abun

Bulk Transcriptome and Single-Cell Sequencing Datasets Reveal Key Programmed Cell Death Patterns in Radiation-Induced Lung Injury: Crosstalk Between NETosis and Macrophages' Responses.

Programmed cell death (PCD) has been implicated in the development and progression of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). However, the specific PCD subtype most relevant to RILI remains unclear. We integrated bulk transcriptome datasets (GSE25295, GSE41789) and a single-cell RNA sequencing dataset (GSE211713) from lung tissue to analyze the cell type-specific PCD patterns in RILI. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using limma for bulk data and Seurat for scRNA-seq data. PCD-related DEGs were extracted based on curated gene sets, followed by functional enrichment analyzes.

AI-driven strategies for enhancing Mpox surveillance and response in Africa.

Mpox, a zoonotic viral disease endemic to several African countries, has re-emerged as a significant public health concern, particularly in regions with limited healthcare resources. Current public health strategies in Africa fall short due to fragmented surveillance systems, delayed diagnostic capabilities, and inadequate resource distribution networks that cannot effectively respond to rapidly evolving outbreaks in remote and underserved areas. This narrative review explores the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the management and control of Mpox in Africa. AI technologies

Exogenous compound bacteria enhance the nutrient removal efficiency of integrated bioremediation systems: Functional genes and microorganisms play key roles.

With the continuous development of intensive mariculture, the application of the integrated bioremediation system of aquaculture wastewater (IBSAW) is increasingly promoted. However, the process and nutrients removal performance of the IBSAW need to be further optimized due to its immature technologies. In this study, exogenous compound bacteria (ECB) were added to IBSAW to investigate its pollutants removal efficiency and the relevant mechanisms. High-throughput sequencing and Geochip gene array were used to analyze the correlation between nutrients and bacteria, and the abundance of N and P

Transcendent thinking counteracts longitudinal effects of mid-adolescent exposure to community violence in the anterior cingulate cortex.

Adolescence involves extensive brain maturation, characterized by social sensitivity and emotional lability, that co-occurs with increased independence. Mid-adolescence is also a hallmark developmental stage when youths become motivated to reflect on the broader personal, ethical, and systems-level implications of happenings, a process we term transcendent thinking. Here, we examine the confluence of these developmental processes to ask, from a transdisciplinary perspective, how might community violence exposure (CVE) impact brain development during mid-adolescence, and how might youths' dispo

Evaluating traumatic event scoring schemas for their predictive value to concurrent diagnostic profiles: Texas Childhood Trauma Research Network.

BACKGROUND: To prospectively chart pathways of risk and resiliency following childhood trauma studies need to address three limitations of prior work: 1) recruit beyond social service/ treatment settings; 2) include broad spectrum of trauma types and 3) cast a broad longitudinal measurement framework of both clinical diagnoses and traumatic exposures. The Texas-Childhood Trauma Research Network (TX-CTRN) is a multi-site collaboration that addresses these limitations. In this baseline-only report, we examined domains of trauma and evaluated the concurrent predictive validity of various traumati

The role of community pharmacies in early detection of suspected COVID-19 cases in 2020: lessons from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Tanzania reported its first COVID-19 case on 16 March 2020. We conducted event-based surveillance of COVID-19 suspect cases among pharmacy clients presenting with respiratory symptoms and influenza-like illness to increase early and rapid detection of COVID-19 cases and mitigate transmission. We conveniently sampled 103 pharmacies from Dar es Salaam, the epicentre for the COVID-19 pandemic in Tanzania at the time. Between 23 April 2020 and 18 May 2020, 67% of the pharmacies (69/103) reported an observed increase in the number of clients presenting with respiratory symptoms and influenza-like i

COVID-19 vaccine attitudes among youth experiencing homelessness: a qualitative analysis with opportunities for action.

Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) are uniquely vulnerable to COVID-19 infection, yet are often excluded from response planning during the COVID-19 pandemic and other public health crises. As part of a larger community- and youth-engaged project through a national network of Prevention Research Centers, our qualitative study sought to describe youth perspectives that influence COVID-19 vaccine confidence and uptake, and identify youth-driven strategies to guide public health efforts to improve vaccine confidence and access. We conducted focus groups with youth experiencing homelessness (n =

The Women@Heart NS Pilot Project: Rationale and Design of a Community-Based Peer Support Program for Women Living With Heart Disease in Nova Scotia.

Cardiac rehabilitation is associated with lower mortality and improved psychosocial outcomes. However, disparities exist in referral and access to cardiac rehabilitation for Nova Scotian women, a situation exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Women@Heart (W@H) is a 4-month community-based peer support program developed and validated by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, for women living with heart disease. The program aims to empower women with coping strategies, provide a supportive learning environment, and establish volunteer advocacy groups. The primary objective of this study is t

Critical Clinical Evaluation of COVID-19 Patients with Tuberculosis in the Indian Sub-Continent.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 and tuberculosis (TB) are infectious diseases that predominantly affect the respiratory system with common symptoms, such as cough, fever, and shortness of breath, making them dual burdens. METHODS: This review will discuss the characteristics of the coexistence of TB and new infectious illnesses to provide a framework for addressing the current epidemic. Currently, there are no clear and significant data on COVID-19 infection in TB patients, they may not respond appropriately to drug therapy and may have worse treatment outcomes, especially if their TB treatment is inter

The Impact of Stigma and Sexual Identity on PrEP Awareness and Use Among At-Risk Men Who Have Sex With Men in Four U.S. Cities (HPTN 078).

Persistent pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use reduces the risk of HIV infection, yet uptake lags among those with the greatest need. Sexual identity stigma may be a significant barrier to PrEP awareness and use among high-risk communities. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether sexual identity was related to PrEP awareness and use. This multi-site HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) study (HPTN 078) focuses on men who have sex with men (MSM) (n=335) who were HIV-negative at screening. The majority of participants were non-white (62.1%), younger than 35 (57.9%), single (79.1%)

Protective Effect of Intestinal Blautia Against Neutropenic Fever in Allogeneic Transplant Recipients.

BackgroundNeutropenic fever (NF) occurs in >70% of hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients, without a documented cause in most cases. Antibiotics used to prevent and treat NF disrupt the gut microbiota; these disruptions predict a higher posttransplantation mortality rate. We hypothesized that specific features in the gut microbial community may mediate the risk of NF.MethodsWe searched a large gut microbiota database in allogeneic HCT recipients (12 546 stool samples; 1278 patients) to find pairs with NF (cases) versus without NF (controls) on the same day relative to transplantation a
