Exploring the relationship between gratitude and depression among older adults with chronic low back pain: a sequential mediation analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Gratitude has been identified as a key factor in a number of positive health-related outcomes; however, the mechanisms whereby gratitude is associated with well-being among older adults with chronic pain are poorly understood. Using the Positive Psychological Well-Being Model as a theoretical framework, the objective of the present study was to examine the serial mediating effects of social support, stress, sleep, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) on the relationship between gratitude and depressive symptoms. METHODS: A total sample of 60 community-dwelling older adults wi

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in the care of a preterm infant with COVID-19 infection: Case report.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) in December 2019 and has since unleashed a global pandemic, with over 518 million cases as of May 10, 2022. Neonates represent a very small proportion of those patients. Among reported cases of neonates with symptomatic COVID-19 infection, the rates of hospitalization remain low. Most reported cases in infants and neonates are community acquired with mild symptoms, most commonly fever, rhinorrhea and cough. Very few require intensive care or invasive support for acute infection. We present a case of a

An Evaluation of Natural Environment Interventions for Informal Cancer Caregivers in the Community.

Home-based informal caregiving by friends and family members of patients with cancer is be-coming increasingly common globally with rates continuing to rise. Such caregiving is often emo-tionally and cognitively demanding, resulting in mental exhaustion and high perceived burden. Support for caregivers may be fostered by engagement with the natural environment. Interaction with nature is associated with mental health benefits such as stress reduction and improved well-being. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the state of the science regarding the use of nat-ural environment interventio

Social Support and Its Impact on Ethnic Identity and HIV Risk among Migrant Workers.

Migrant workers are disproportionately affected by HIV due to poverty, social isolation, lack of access to and availability of health care services, acculturation, language barriers, constant mobility, and lack of knowledge. This study examined the impact of changes in social support on ethnic identity and HIV risk behaviors among migrant workers in South Florida. For this study, baseline and 6-month follow-up data were collected from an HIV intervention study among migrant workers in South Florida (n = 270) who reported unprotected sex in the past 30 days. The Multigroup Identity Measure was

Sexual and Gender Minority Health Curricula and Institutional Support Services at U.S. Schools of Public Health.

Limited research has examined the ways in which public health training programs equip students to address health disparities affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and other sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations. This study outlines the availability of public health curricula on SGM health topics, and the prevalence of LGBT and SGM-inclusive institutional support services across CEPH-accredited U.S. schools of public health. Content analysis of all course offerings related to gender and sexuality revealed a limited focus on sexual and gender minority heal

Randomized controlled trial of a home-visiting intervention on infant cognitive development in peri-urban South Africa.

AIM: To determine whether, in an impoverished South African community, an intervention that benefitted infant attachment also benefitted cognitive development. METHOD: Pregnant females were randomized to intervention (n=220) and no-treatment control groups (n=229). The intervention was home-based parenting support for attachment, delivered until 6 months postpartum. At 18 months, infants were assessed on attachment and cognitive development (Bayley Scales Mental Development Index [MDI]) (n=127 intervention, n=136 control participants). Infant MDI was examined in relation to intervention, soci

Psychological health and life experiences of pregnant adolescent mothers in Jamaica.

A recent Jamaican school-based survey revealed that 23.1% of 13-15 year-olds, had attempted suicide one or more times during the last 12 months. Research that links adolescent pregnancy and suicidal behaviour is lacking in Jamaica. Psychological distress and suicidal behaviours amongst pregnant adolescents elsewhere in the Americas has been documented at prevalence of between 13.3%-20%. The purpose of the study was to explore the experiences and the impact of pregnancy on pregnant adolescent psychological health. Individual interviews and focus groups were conducted with adolescents in two Jam

The gender gap in depressive symptoms among Japanese elders: evaluating social support and health as mediating factors.

Depression has been described as the world's most prevalent illness and a leading cause of disability across age groups. The global literature on aging and depression reports greater prevalence of depressive symptoms among women than men. This research applies data from the Nihon University Japanese Longitudinal Study of Aging to the gender gap in depressive symptoms reported by Japanese elders. This study takes the position that cultural norms centered on obligations to care determine both the prevalence of social support and its application by family members. Since gender is the lens through

Angry wives, abusive husbands: relationship between domestic violence and psychosocial variables.

BACKGROUND: A small number of studies conducted in Pakistan have shown high rates of domestic violence. None of the studies, however, discussed associated psychosocial factors. We interviewed a group of women to look at violence and associated psychosocial factors. We wanted to see if self-esteem, quality of relationships, social support, stressful life events, psychiatric symptoms, and different measures of anger were associated with domestic violence. METHODOLOGY: In a cross-sectional survey of women presenting to primary care physicians, we used Women's Experience with Battering and Domest

Prenatal Education for Pregnant Parents on Opioid Agonist Therapy in Newfoundland and Labrador: A Qualitative Study.

Women on opioid agonist therapy often enter labour with limited information about neonatal withdrawal, newborn care, and hospital routines. Stigma and fear of child protection involvement can further limit communication. This study explored parents' information needs regarding opioid agonist therapy and newborn care. Seven virtual in-depth interviews were conducted between December 2020 and April 2021. Participants described inconsistent prenatal education on neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, hospitalization, and newborn care. Concerns about NICU admission, child protection involvement, dos

Implementation of mobile medical units for naloxone distribution and MOUD linkage in Ohio's HEALing Communities Study: a community case study.

UNLABELLED: Naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug, and medication for opioid use disorder have been found to effectively combat opioid-related overdose and death. However, cost and access remain considerable barriers for many individuals at the highest risk of opioid-related overdoses. Similarly, many struggle to access medications for opioid use disorder because of the limited availability of treatment facilities and inadequate transportation options. Within the broader HEALing Communities Study, some Ohio communities elected to use mobile medical units to support delivery of naloxone an

Legitimizing AIDS as a Disability: The AIDS and Disability Action Project in British Columbia, 1987-1991.

In 1987, the British Columbia Coalition of the Disabled launched the AIDS and Disability Action Project. This article studies phase one of the project, undertaken from 1987 through 1991, to trace how the Coalition educated the disability community about HIV/AIDS, advocated for HIV/AIDS to be recognized as a disability, and pushed for cooperation between the HIV/AIDS and disability movements. Accordingly, it analyzes the research reports, educational materials, and conference presentations produced by and for the Coalition during this time. A critical evaluation of these materials demonstrates

From Awareness to Understanding: A Knowledge-Focused Framework for Parkinson's Disease Communication.

The 2024 passage of the National Plan to End Parkinson's Act promises federal coordination and resources, creating a pivotal moment to sharpen public communication. Building on this opportunity means addressing unique challenges associated with Parkinson's disease, including the subtle and complex nature of symptoms, a public image dominated by a "tremor-only, older white male" stereotype, and uneven access to specialty care. These factors complicate early detection, stigma reduction, and equitable service use. Drawing on stigma research and communication science, this commentary reviews recen

Integrating Ethics in Public Health Guideline Development: Case Study of Guidelines on Respiratory Isolation for Persons With Tuberculosis in Community Settings.

Public health interventions often involve explicit trade-offs in which the health of the many must be weighed against burdens imposed on individuals. We describe development of public health guidelines for respiratory isolation in community settings for persons with tuberculosis. While stopping the spread of disease is a core moral imperative in public health, the duty to prevent disease transmission does not supersede all other considerations. Community well-being must be balanced with individual well-being, liberty, and social justice. In response to these challenges, the National Tuberculos

A dual-ring network design for the fast orbit feedback system of the storage ring.

Building reliable fast orbit feedback (FOFB) systems to offer high stability of the beam orbit becomes more challenging for the diffraction-limited storage ring due to the smaller beam size. The beam position measurement and control (BPMC) processor has been developed to streamline the FOFB system architecture by integrating BPM (Beam Position Monitor) electronics and an orbit feedback controller. This paper designs a hierarchical dual-ring network topology based on BPMC processors using parameters derived from the storage ring of the Hefei Advanced Light Facility.
