Bacterial keratitis in a tertiary hospital in São Paulo: a 21-year review of the epidemiological, laboratory, and clinical data.

Infectious keratitis is a sight-threatening condition that is usually an ocular emergency. The visual outcome depends on prompt and accurate clinical management as well as geographic and epidemiological awareness. We conducted a retrospective observational study to define the epidemiological and laboratory profile, as well as the clinical course of bacterial keratitis in a tertiary hospital in São Paulo over 21 years. Information about age, sex, predisposing factors, topical and surgical treatment, visual acuity, ulcers' classification, bacterioscopy, culture, and antibiotic sensitivity tests

Vitamin A deficiency compromises the barrier function of the retinal pigment epithelium.

A major cause for childhood blindness worldwide is attributed to nutritional vitamin A deficiency. Surprisingly, the molecular basis of the ensuing retinal degeneration has not been well defined. Abundant expression of the retinoid transporter STRA6 in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and homeostatic blood levels of retinol-binding protein delay vitamin A deprivation of the mouse eyes. Hence, genetic dissection of STRA6 makes mice susceptible to nutritional manipulation of ocular retinoid status. We performed RNA-seq analyses and complemented the data with tests of visual physiology, ocula

Reduced activity of parvalbumin-positive interneurons in the posterior parietal cortex causes visually dominant multisensory decisions in freely navigating mice.

Multisensory integration is vital for animals to make optimal decisions in a complicated sensory environment. However, the neural mechanisms for flexible multisensory behaviors are not well understood. Here, we found that mice exhibit auditory-dominant decisions in the head-fixed and stationary state and switch to make visual-dominant decisions in the freely navigating state to resolve audiovisual conflicts. To understand the neural mechanism of the state-dependent switch in multisensory decisions, we performed in vivo calcium imaging of parvalbumin-expressing (PV+) inhibitory neurons in the p

Preoperative assessment of cutaneous melanoma thickness by multispectral dermoscopy.

Preoperative assessment of Breslow thickness by means of sonography and clinical and dermoscopic criteria in white light dermoscopy has been reported, but up until now, the use of multispectral dermoscopy has not been investigated. Aim of this research is to determine whether multispectral dermoscopy and more specifically pigment maps can be used as a predictive marker for Breslow thickness in melanoma. Pigment maps are generated in real time from multispectral dermoscopic images and help to visualize the presence of pigment in a lesion. Multispectral images of 110 melanomas were collected, us

Innovations in thoracic imaging: CT, radiomics, AI and x-ray velocimetry.

In recent years, pulmonary imaging has seen enormous progress, with the introduction, validation and implementation of new hardware and software. There is a general trend from mere visual evaluation of radiological images to quantification of abnormalities and biomarkers, and assessment of 'non visual' markers that contribute to establishing diagnosis or prognosis. Important catalysts to these developments in thoracic imaging include new indications (like computed tomography [CT] lung cancer screening) and the COVID-19 pandemic. This review focuses on developments in CT, radiomics, artificial

Multivariate Analysis of Vocal Fold Vibrations in Normal Speakers Using High-Speed Digital Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the normal variations in vocal fold vibrations. We conducted a prospective study on normal subjects using high-speed digital imaging (HSDI) to elucidate key parameters regarding age/gender-related normal variations. METHODS: Forty-six healthy adult volunteers were divided into young (aged ≤35 years) male, young female, elderly (aged ≥65 years) male, and elderly female subgroups. HSDI data of sustained phonation of /i/ at a comfortable pitch and loudness were obtained, and vibratory parameters were calculated using the visual-perceptual rating, laryngotopogr

Patients with first-episode untreated schizophrenia who experience concomitant visual disturbances and auditory hallucinations exhibit co-impairment of the brain and retinas-a pilot study.

There are limited structural brain and retina alteration data from schizophrenia patients who experience visual disturbances (VDs) with or without auditory hallucinations (AHs). We compared brain and retina alterations between first-episode untreated schizophrenia patients with VDs (FUSCH-VDs) with versus without AHs, and between patients and healthy controls (HCs)(N = 30/group). VDs, AHs, gray matter volumes (GMVs), and retinal thicknesses were evaluated with the Bonn Scale for Assessment of Basic Symptoms (BSABS) scale, the Auditory Hallucinations Rating Scale (AHRS), magnetic resonance imag

Efficacy of Intra-Arterial Thrombolysis for Acute Central Retinal Artery Occlusion: A Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The best management strategy still remains strong controversy for acute nonarteritic central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). We thus performed a meta-analysis to determine the efficacy of intra-arterial thrombolysis (IAT) for visual improvement according to different times from symptom onset. METHODS: We searched EMBASE, PubMed, and Web of Science for relevant studies assessing efficiency of IAT in patients with CRAO compared with standard therapy. Fixed-effects and random-effects models were performed. RESULTS: Five eligible studies including 459 patients with acute CRAO were

Mapping subcomponents of numerical cognition in relation to functional and anatomical landmarks of human parietal cortex.

Human functional imaging has identified the middle part of the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) as an important brain substrate for different types of numerical tasks. This area is often equated with the macaque ventral intraparietal area (VIP) where neuronal selectivity for non-symbolic numerical stimuli (sets of items) is found. However, the low spatial resolution and whole-brain averaging analysis performed in most fMRI studies limit the extent to which an exact correspondence of activations in different numerical tasks with specific sub-regions of the IPS can be established. Here we acquired hig

Orbitofrontal approach for the fenestration of a symptomatic sellar arachnoid cyst.

BACKGROUND: Sellar arachnoid cysts (SACs) are rare lesions and incidentally found on brain imaging. The pathophysiology is poorly understood. Some authors suggested that SACs develop as a herniation of arachnoid membrane through the diaphragma sellae followed by cyst formation. Furthermore, Meyer et al. postulated that SACs are formed by splitting of the arachnoid layers. Symptomatic SACs present with headache, visual field deficit, or pituitary dysfunction. The data are limited on the indications and timing for intervention. We present a case of symptomatic SAC that was fenestrated using orbi

Reducing variability of perceptual decision making with offline theta-burst TMS of dorsal medial frontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that the dorsal medial frontal cortex (dMFC) may make an important contribution to perceptual decision-making, and not only to motor control. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: By fitting psychometric functions to behavioural data after TMS we tested whether the dMFC is critical specifically for the precision and/or bias of perceptual judgements. Additionally we aimed to disentangle potential roles of the dMFC in dealing with perceptual versus response switching. METHODS: A subjective visual vertical task (SVV) was used in which participants weight visual (and other,

Visualization of mechanical stress-mediated Ca2+ signaling in the gut using intravital imaging.

Mechanosensory systems have been implicated in the maintenance of gut homeostasis, but details on the related mechanisms are scarce. Recently, we generated a conditional Ca2+ biosensor yellow cameleon 3.60 (YC3.60)-expressing transgenic mouse model and established a five-dimensional (5D; x, y, z, time, and Ca2+) intravital imaging system for investigating lymphoid tissues and enteric epithelial cell responses. To validate this gut-sensing system, we visualized responses of enteric nervous system (ENS) cells in Nestin-Cre/YC3.60flox mice with specific YC3.60 expression. The ENS, including the m
