Internationally adopted children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate: Middle ear findings and hearing during childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Adopted children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate form a diverse group of patients. Due to increased age at palatal repair, adopted children have a higher risk of velopharyngeal insuffiency and poor speech outcome. Delayed palate repair may also lead to longer lasting Eustachian tube dysfunction. Decreased function of the Eustachian tube causes otitis media with effusion and recurrent acute otitis media, which can lead to other middle ear problems and hearing loss. METHODS: One-hundred-and-thirty-two adopted children treated by the Cleft palate team in Wilhelmina Children's Hospi

Anatomical and morphometrical study of middle ear ossicles in 2 to 3-month-old Makouei sheep fetuses.

The middle ear ossicles are important due to transmission of sound to the inner ear leading to sound understanding. The aim of present study was to determine the anatomical and morphometrical aspects of middle ear ossicles in Makouei sheep fetuses. For this experimental study, eight sheep fetuses at the age of 2 to 3 months were provided from public slaughterhouse; their middle ear ossicles were removed from tympanic cavity subsequently and assessed anatomically using stereomicroscope. For statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test were used. The results showed that rostral

Middle Ear Histopathology Following Magnetic Delivery to the Cochlea of Prednisolone-loaded Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Rats.

Delivery of therapy to the cochlea is a challenge and limits the efficacy of therapies meant to treat hearing loss, reverse tinnitus, and protect hearing from chemotherapy regimens. Magnetic injection is a technique that uses magnetic fields to inject nanoparticles from the middle ear into the cochlea, where they can then elute therapy to treat hearing disorders. To evaluate the safety of this treatment in the middle ear, 30 rats were subdivided into 6 groups and treated by single or multiple intratympanic injections of saline, prednisolone, nanoparticles, or nanoparticles loaded with predniso

Influence of Oral Probiotic Streptococcus salivarius K12 on Ear and Oral Cavity Health in Humans: Systematic Review.

Traditionally, probiotics are linked to the good health of the intestine and most clinical studies focus on that field. Evidence of oral probiotic use for ear and oral cavity disease prevention with impact on human health is limited. This work reviews existing studies and literature on Streptococcus salivarius K12 as an oral probiotic and effects of S. salivarius K12 on human ear and oral cavity human health. The studies were accessed via database searches: MEDLINE, PubMed, and Elsevier. The search included/focused on/encompassed publications from 2003 to 2016 with keywords related to K12 Stre

Chondrocytes from congenital microtia possess an inferior capacity for in vivo cartilage regeneration to healthy ear chondrocytes.

The remnant auricular cartilage from microtia has become a valuable cell source for ear regeneration. It is important to clarify the issue of whether the genetically defective microtia chondrocytes could engineer cartilage tissue comparable to healthy ear chondrocytes. In the current study, the histology and cell yield of native microtia and normal ear cartilage were investigated, and the biological characteristics of derived chondrocytes examined, including proliferation, chondrogenic phenotype and cell migration. Furthermore, the in vivo cartilage-forming capacity of passaged microtia and no

Inner Ear Barotrauma After Underwater Pool Competency Training Without the Use of Compressed Air Case and Review.

Inner ear barotrauma can occur when the gas-filled chambers of the ear have difficulty equalizing pressure with the outside environment after changes in ambient pressure. This can transpire even with small pressure changes. Hypobaric or hyperbaric environments can place significant stress on the structures of the middle and inner ear. If methods to equalize pressure between the middle ear and other connected gas-filled spaces (i.e., Valsalva maneuver) are unsuccessful, middle ear overpressurization can occur. This force can be transmitted to the fluid-filled inner ear, making it susceptible to

Three-dimensional autologous cartilage framework fabrication assisted by new additive manufactured ear-shaped templates for microtia reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: During microtia reconstruction, the intraoperative design of the cartilage framework is important for the appearance and symmetry of the bilateral auricles. Templates (traditionally, the X-ray film template) are usually utilized to complete the task, which can provide cues regarding size, cranioauricular angle and positioning to the surgeons. With a combination of three-dimensional (3D) scanning and additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, we utilized two different ear-shaped templates (sheet moulding and 3D templates) during the fabrication of 3D-customized autologous cartilage fra

Inner ear enhancement on gadolinium-enhanced 3D FLAIR images in a patient with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is an autoimmune disorder that occurs in the melanocytes present in the uvea, leptomeninges, skin and inner ear. Clinically, this disease is characterized by bilateral uveitis and retinal detachment and is associated with meningismus and hearing loss. Gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced MRI may aid in demonstrating bilateral choroidal thickening and central nervous system involvement. We present a case of VKH where Gd-enhanced three-dimensional (3D) fluid attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging showed abnormal bilateral enhancement in the inner ears. A 36-year-ol

In vitro Activity of Cefditoren against Middle Ear Fluid Isolates from Costa Rican Children with Otitis Media.

Otitis media (OM) is one of the most common infections in children, Streptococcus pneumoniae and nontypable Haemophilus influenzae being the two most common pathogens isolated in the middle ear fluid (MEF) of children with OM. Cefditoren is a third-generation cephalosporin with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, including activity against those pathogens commonly causing OM, with enhanced stability against common β-lactamases. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of cefditoren against pathogens collected from the MEF of Costa Rican children with OM between

Correlative mRNA and protein expression of middle and inner ear inflammatory cytokines during mouse acute otitis media.

Although the inner ear has long been reported to be susceptible to middle ear disease, little is known of the inflammatory mechanisms that might cause permanent sensorineural hearing loss. Recent studies have shown inner ear tissues are capable of expressing inflammatory cytokines during otitis media. However, little quantitative information is available concerning cytokine gene expression in the inner ear and the protein products that result. Therefore, this study was conducted of mouse middle and inner ear during acute otitis media to measure the relationship between inflammatory cytokine ge

Vocal development during postnatal growth and ear morphology in a shrew that generates seismic vibrations, Diplomesodon pulchellum.

The ability of adult and subadult piebald shrews (Diplomesodon pulchellum) to produce 160Hz seismic waves is potentially reflected in their vocal ontogeny and ear morphology. In this study, the ontogeny of call variables and body traits was examined in 11 litters of piebald shrews, in two-day intervals from birth to 22 days (subadult), and ear structure was investigated in two specimens using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Across ages, the call fundamental frequency (f0) was stable in squeaks and clicks and increased steadily in screeches, representing an unusual, non-descending ontogen

Pressure buffering by the tympanic membrane. In vivo measurements of middle ear pressure fluctuations during elevator motion.

OBJECTIVES: The tympanic membrane (TM) represents a pressure buffer, which contributes to the overall pressure regulation of the middle ear (ME). This buffer capacity is based on its viscoelastic properties combined with those of the attached ossicular chain, muscles and ligaments. The current work presents a set of in vivo recordings of the ME pressure variations normally occurring in common life: elevator motion. This is defined as a situation of smooth ambient pressure increase or decrease on a limited range and at a low rate of pressure change. Based on these recordings, the purpose was a

Cytokine, chemokine, and Toll-like receptor expression in middle ear fluids of children with acute otitis media.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Acute otitis media (AOM) is a common bacterial infection in childhood that causes an inflammatory response in the middle ear. Leukocytes produce different inflammatory molecules in vitro when stimulated with Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The major causes of AOM are Streptococcus pneumoniae, nontypeable Haemophilus influenza, and Moraxella catarrhalis. We sought to assess differences in cytokines, chemokines, and expression of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) at onset of AOM based on bacterial culture results. STUDY DESIGN: Middle ear fluid (MEF) from 66 children w
