The eyes are central to face detection: revisiting the foundations of face processing.

Face detection feels effortless, yet it requires finely tuned computations to extract socially meaningful signals from the visual stream. Here, we used the Bubbles method to isolate the facial features and spatial frequency information that support face categorization. Across three experiments varying in task demands and visual context, the eye region consistently emerged as the most diagnostic source of information, particularly in high spatial frequencies. This finding held whether participants distinguished faces from noise, from non-face objects, or from real-world categories-suggesting th

Dark-EvGS: Event Camera as an Eye for Radiance Field in the Dark.

In low-light environments, conventional cameras often struggle to capture clear multi-view images of objects due to dynamic range limitations and motion blur caused by long exposure. Event cameras, with their high-dynamic range and high-speed properties, have the potential to mitigate these issues. Additionally, 3D Gaussian Splatting (GS) enables radiance field reconstruction, facilitating bright frame synthesis from multiple viewpoints in low-light conditions. However, naively using an event-assisted 3D GS approach still faced challenges because, in low lights, events are noisy, frames lack q

Eye-Tracking Assessment in Patients with Disorders of Consciousness: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Disorders of consciousness (DOC), including vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS) and minimally conscious state (MCS), present significant diagnostic challenges. Misdiagnosis rates approach 40%, often due to limitations in detecting subtle behavioural responses through clinical observation alone. Eye-tracking technology offers objective, quantitative assessment of visual behaviours that may reveal covert signs of consciousness. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of eye-tracking technology compared to the Coma Recovery S

Memory for scene details in eye-movement behavior, with and without awareness.

Conflicting findings have led to uncertainty about the sensitivity of eye movements to unaware memory when materials are manipulated scenes. Here, we examine several factors (e.g., task instructions, manipulation type) that may determine whether and when unaware memory-based viewing effects are evident and detected in the data. Forty-eight young adults completed two encoding blocks, an indirect test block (i.e., eye-movements used alone to examine memory), and two direct test blocks. Test scenes were new, repeated, or manipulated, with an object removed from, or added to, the picture. Three ex

The effect of choice and reward on motivation and performance: an eye-tracking study.

INTRODUCTION: Choice and reward are two prevailing motivational mechanisms. However, previous studies have found differing results regarding their effects. According to the literature, several factors including task and contextual characteristics can influence their effects. In line with motivational congruence theory (MCT), this study examines the effect of these motivational mechanisms in a controlling context, characterized by an attention-demanding memory test. METHODS: This study uses a lab experiment to examine the direct effect of performance-contingent rewards and choice and their ind

Hover Fly Eyes and Antennae Are Sexually Dimorphic but Do Not Tradeoff.

Sensory systems are energetically expensive and may evolve through tradeoffs between modalities. We tested the sensory tradeoff hypothesis in four hover fly species by examining allometry and sexual dimorphism in eye and antennal (funiculus) size. Across species, larger flies exhibited larger sensory structures and males generally possessed relatively larger eyes and funiculi than females after controlling for body size. However, we found no consistent negative relationship between eye and antennal investment within species. These findings suggest that sensory investment in hover flies is shap

A natural programmable metamaterial controls 3D curvature of compound eyes.

Panoramic vision of the convex compound eyes, common to insects and crustaceans, relies on micrometer-scale curvature variations. These variations generate specialized visual zones adapted to specific tasks, including detecting prey, mates, or predators. However, how such fine-scale curvature is encoded during development remains unknown. We find in Drosophila melanogaster that the basal surface of the developing retina is organized as a supracellular triangular mesh where the size of these triangles is distributed in a species-specific 2D pattern. Functional experiments using genetic perturba

EXPRESS: The Effect of Positive Emojis on Reading: An Eye-Movement Study.

Emojis are widely used in digital communication to convey emotion, yet their impact on word-level reading in sentence contexts remains unclear. We conducted an eye-tracking experiment examining how positive versus neutral face emojis embedded mid-sentence affect the processing of preceding and following words. Positive rather than neutral emojis yielded parafoveal-on-foveal effects on the n-1 word, evidenced by longer first-fixation, gaze duration, and single-fixation measures. This valence effect persisted after accounting for mislocated fixations, indicating that parafoveal emotional process

Advances in Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma with an Eye on Disparities and Vulnerable Populations.

Advances in pediatric and adolescent young adult Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), including the incorporation of targeted therapy and immunotherapy have resulted in excellent cure rates with survival greater than 90%, including patients with advanced stage disease. Current trials seek to maintain excellent survival while reducing acute and long-term toxicities. Despite these successes, vulnerable patient populations, including Black, Hispanic, and adolescent young adult patients, continue to have inferior outcomes. This article reviews recent therapeutic advances in HL, summarizes therapeutic gaps, and

Evolution of the vertebrate retina by repurposing of a composite ancestral median eye.

The vertebrate retina is a uniquely complex and evolutionarily conserved structure, combining ciliary (rod and cone) and rhabdomeric (ganglion, amacrine and horizontal cells) photoreceptor lineages within a multilayered circuit. This arrangement contrasts with the ancestral bilaterian cephalic pattern, where rhabdomeric photoreceptors dominate lateral eyes and ciliary photoreceptors are largely limited to unpigmented, non-visual median positions. Here, we make a case that the vertebrate retina evolved through the lateralization of a complex median photoreceptive organ already containing both p

A differentiable simulation of the eye for patient-specific strabismus surgery planning.

PURPOSE: Up to 4% of adults will develop strabismus in their lifetime. The most common surgical intervention involves adjusting the length of one or more extraocular muscles to correct the angular deviation. This correction depends on surgical expertise and statistical reference tables, which often fail to yield optimal results for patients with atypical eye morphology. Our work proposes a physics-based modeling approach to personalized surgical planning, accounting for patient-specific eye anatomy. METHODS: We built a physics-based simulator of the eye and its muscles, incorporating patient-

Neurocutaneous system: Is the skin a big eye with deep brain connections?

Traditionally recognised as the body's largest organ, the skin acts as a protective barrier and primary sensory interface with the external environment. Recent advances in dermatology and neuroscience have revealed a sophisticated neuroendocrine network within the skin, suggesting that the skin's role extends far beyond mere protection and sensation. In this article, we propose an innovative perspective by conceptualising the skin as a "big eye" in close communication with the central nervous system (CNS). Central to this concept is the idea that all nerve endings in the skin converge into a s

Beta Zone and Gamma Zone Parapapillary Atrophy in Nonmyopic Eyes.

PRCIS: Not only β-zone but also ɣ-zone atrophy is observed in nonmyopic eyes. The presence of ɣ-zone atrophy reflects optic nerve head canal offset during eyeball expansion, and its directionality is associated with the offset direction. PURPOSE: To evaluate the locations of β-zone and ɣ-zone parapapillary atrophy (PPA) in nonmyopic eyes. METHODS: A total of 151 nonmyopic eyes with an axial length (AXL) of <24.0 mm were included in this cross-sectional study. From the Bruch membrane opening (BMO), the angular locations of the maximal width of β-zone PPA (without retinal pigment epitheliu

A Review of the Principles, Methodologies and Characteristics of Dry Eye Animal Models.

Dry eye disease is one of the most prevalent diseases on the ocular surface, which can cause discomfort and visual impairment in patients. As a chronic disorder, dry eye can be caused by various factors, including reduced tear film stability, increased tear osmotic pressure and inflammation response on the ocular surface. Due to its complex and still unclear pathogenesis, many challenges related to the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye must be addressed through animal studies. An ideal animal model for dry eye is essential to the research on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of the d

A Novel Slit Lamp-Based System for 3D Ultrasound of the Eye.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop and evaluate a novel slit-lamp-based system to acquire 3-dimensional (3D) ultrasound volumes using conventional ultrasound probes. METHODS: A slit-lamp adapter was 3D printed and connected with a linear actuator and graphical user interface (GUI) system to control movement and create volumes of 2-dimensional scans. The ultrasound probe contacted the patient's cornea to perform the scan. The GUI software was designed to acquire and process b-scan images, which were exported to 3D Slicer and manually annotated. The annotated images were used to render 3D r

Double insertion of superior oblique muscle of the eye: a rare variation.

Superior oblique muscle of the eye is involved in depression, abduction and intorsion of the eyeball. Knowledge of its variations is useful for understanding and repairing strabismus cases and other visual problems. We report a rare unilateral variation of right superior oblique muscle. The superior oblique muscle had a normal origin. However, it had two insertions. Its tendon passed through the fibrous trochlea and was inserted to the sclera in a usual manner. In addition, it had an additional insertion to the roof of the orbit through an aponeurosis. We also observed the encroachment of the
