Cellulitis due to Shewanella algae: Crucial diagnostic clues from basic microbiological tests.

Shewanella spp. are infrequently implicated in human infections but they are emerging pathogens with particular significance in regions with warm climates, such as Southeast Asia. This is a case of a middle-aged diabetic and hypertensive man who presented with worsening congestive heart failure symptoms associated with fever and a painful right leg. His right leg had numerous scabs and was tender, warm and erythematous. He was provisionally diagnosed with decompensated heart failure precipitated by cellulitis and uncontrolled hypertension. His blood grew non-fermentative, oxidase-positive and

The first case of third-generation cephalosporins resistant Kluyvera ascorbata biliary tract infection in Japan: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Kluyvera ascorbata is a gram-negative, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, aerobic fermentative bacterium with flagella. This organism colonizes in the human body and its pathogenicity is extremely low; few clinical cases of K. ascorbata infection have been reported. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report on a patient who experienced severe sepsis and acute cholangitis due to K. ascorbata bacteremia and was treated with levofloxacin following antibiotic susceptibility testing. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of third-generation cephalosporins resistant K. ascorbata inf

High-affinity transport, cyanide-resistant respiration, and ethanol production under aerobiosis underlying efficient high glycerol consumption by Wickerhamomyces anomalus.

Wickerhamomyces anomalus strain LBCM1105 was originally isolated from the wort of cachaça (the Brazilian fermented sugarcane juice-derived Brazilian spirit) and has been shown to grow exceptionally well at high amounts of glycerol. This paramount residue from the biodiesel industry is a promising cheap carbon source for yeast biotechnology. The assessment of the physiological traits underlying the W. anomalus glycerol consumption ability in opposition to Saccharomyces cerevisiae is presented. A new WaStl1 concentrative glycerol-H+ symporter with twice the affinity of S. cerevisiae was identifi

Duclaux, Chamberland, Roux, Grancher, and Metchnikoff: the five musketeers of Louis Pasteur.

The Institut Pasteur was created, thanks to worldwide generosity with the aim to welcome and treat rabies patients, to provide a place for scientific research and to offer new teaching programs in microbiology. Louis Pasteur invited his main collaborators, who had accompanied him during his previous investigations at École Normale Supérieure, to join him in his new institute. They contributed to the principle discoveries of Pasteur, such as the fight against spontaneous generation, the identification of the ferments of putrefaction, the fight against the silk worm disease, the research on wine

Sorbicillinoid-Based Metabolites from a Sponge-Derived Fungus Trichoderma saturnisporum.

Antibacterial activity assessment and high performance liquid chromatography associated with nuclear magnetic resonance (HPLC/NMR) data revealed that the EtOAc extract of the fermented endophytic fungus Trichoderma saturnisporum DI-IA, obtained from the marine sponge Dictyonella incisa, contained conjugated olefinic metabolites with antibacterial activity. Chemical examination of the fungal strain resulted in the isolation of eight new sorbicillinoid-based compounds, namely saturnispols A⁻H (1⁻8). Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, including the

[Dietetic treatment with fructose in a 5-year-old girl with recurrent D-lactic acidosis].

D-lactic acidosis is an infrequent complication, mainly reported in patients with short bowel syndrome. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of encephalopathy with elevated serum D-lactic acid, usually associating metabolic acidosis. The presence of D-lactate-producing bacteria is necessary for the development of this complication. Other factors, such as the ingestion of large amounts of carbohydrates or reduced intestinal motility, contribute to D-lactic acidosis. We report a case of recurrent D-lactic acidosis in a 5-year-old girl with short bowel syndrome, due to a midgut volvulus. She

Exopolysaccharide from Lactobacillus plantarum LRCC5310 offers protection against rotavirus-induced diarrhea and regulates inflammatory response.

We aimed to determine the effects of Lactobacillus strains against rotaviral infections. Rotaviruses are the major causative agent of acute gastroenteritis in infants and children worldwide. However, to date, no specific antiviral drugs for the treatment of rotavirus infection have been developed. We identified 263 Lactobacillus strains from 35 samples of the traditional Korean fermented vegetable food kimchi. Among them, Lactobacillus plantarum LRCC5310, more specifically the exopolysaccharides produced by these cells, were shown to have an antiviral effect against human rotavirus Wa strain i

New insights in IBS-like disorders: Pandora's box has been opened; a review.

The most complained gastrointestinal symptoms are chronic diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain. Once malignancies and inflammatory bowel diseases are excluded, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and the so called "IBS-like disorders" should be taken into account. The relationship between IBS as defined by Rome IV criteria and these clinical conditions is sometimes obscure, since many IBS patients identify food as a possible trigger for their symptoms. Here, we discuss IBS and the most common IBS-like disorders (celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, fermentable oligosaccharides, disacchar

Seeking new acne treatment from natural products, devices and synthetic drug discovery.

Despite lots of research on the pathogenesis of acne, the development of new therapeutic agents is still stagnant. Conventional agents which target multiple pathological processes have some serious side effects and this makes seeking new treatment options important for treating acne. As new therapeutic options, researchers are focusing on natural products, synthetic drugs and devices. From natural products, epigallocatechin-3 gallate, lupeol, cannabidiol and Lactobacillus fermented Chamaecyperis obtusa were reported to be possible candidates for novel drugs, targeting multiple pathogenic facto

Under-utilization of taps in intensive care unit as a cause of reservoirs of nonfermenting gram-negative bacilli.

INTRODUCTION: The under-utilisation of taps is associated with the generation of reservoirs of non-fermenting gram-negative bacilli with the ability to disseminate. We describe the detection and approach of the problem in an ICU. METHODS: Observational descriptive study in an ICU with individual cubicles with their own sink. We collected clinical samples from patients and environmental samples from tap aerators and reviewed the unit's hygiene measures. RESULTS: We detected four cases due to Chryseobacterium indologenes, one to Elizabethkingia meningoseptica and another to Pseudomonas aerugin

Non-celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS).

There has been increasing interest in the entity "Non-celiac gluten sensitivity" in recent years which was first of its in 1980s. This "re-discovered" disorder is characterized by intestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms which occur after ingestion of gluten containing food. The number of such patients who neither have celiac disease nor wheat allergy, but appear to benefit from gluten withdrawal is increasing substantially. However it still remains a controversial and its pathogenesis is not well understood. Lack of biomarkers is a major limitation making it difficult to differentiate it from

Recurrent complicated urinary tract infection due to rare pathogen Sphingomonas paucimobilis: contamination or real deal?

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an aerobic, oxidase-positive, yellow-pigmented, non-fermentative, Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen that rarely causes infections in humans. It is commonly found in nosocomial environments and, despite its low clinical virulence, it can be responsible for several different infections especially among patients with underlying disease. Here we describe a clinical case of a 46-year-old male paraplegic patient with a history of neurogenic bladder due to insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and renal failure who was admitted to the urology clinic of a university hospi

[Non-celiac gluten sensitivity: a critical review of current evidence].

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is an emerging disorder characterized by intestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms related to the ingestion of gluten-containing food in non-celiac patients. Its prevalence has been estimated to be six to ten-times higher than that of celiac disease (CD). A gluten-free diet is the most widely recommended therapy, but the causative agent remains unknown and there are no consensus diagnostic criteria. Recent studies on NCGS have included patients with possibly overlooked minor CD and diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome without self-reported gluten in

Changing aetiology of healthcare-associated bloodstream infections at three medical centres in Taiwan, 2000-2011.

This multicentre surveillance study was conducted to investigate the trends in incidence and aetiology of healthcare-associated bloodstream infections (HCA-BSIs) in Taiwan. From 2000 to 2011 a total of 56 830 HCA-BSIs were recorded at three medical centres, and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were the most common pathogens isolated (n = 9465, 16·7%), followed by E. coli (n = 7599, 13·4%). The incidence of all HCA-BSIs in each and all hospitals significantly increased over the study period owing to the increase of aerobic Gram-positive cocci and Enterobacteriaceae by 4·2% and 3·6%, resp

[The microbiological structure of chronic suppurative otitis media in the Gomel region].

The objective of the present work was to study the spectrum of microbiota maintaining the inflammatory process in the cavities of the middle ear of the patients presenting with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and to estimate its susceptibility to antibiotic agents. The discharge from the ears was subjected to microbiological analysis in 138 patients with CSOM. Some of the microorganisms proved highly sensitive to antibiotic agents. The following etiologically important pathogens involved in the maintenance of the chronic pyoinflamatory process in the cavities of the middle ear were ide

Theoretical model for calculating ionic equilibria in milk as a function of pH: comparison to experiment.

Acidification is fundamental for the processing of milk into cheeses, caseins, and fermented dairy products. It is established that a pH decrease changes the ionic equilibria of milk, inducing the solubilization of micellar calcium phosphate. This study aimed to present a theoretical model calculating ionic equilibria in milk as a function of pH. From the pH and total concentrations of minerals and caseins, the model calculated the concentrations of all ionic species and their partition between micellar and aqueous phases of milk. As the pH decreased, the minerals present in the micellar phase

Oral findings and dental treatment in a child with West syndrome.

West syndrome (WS) is a rare, severe form of epilepsy that typically manifests early in infancy. It is considered a malignant condition that combines episodes of spasms that occur in clusters (infantile spasm), hypsarrhythmia on the electroencephalogram, and neuropsychomotor delay. Although WS has been widely investigated from a medical standpoint, few reports have focused on the oral findings in patients with this syndrome. This article reports the case history of a 7-year-old child diagnosed with WS. The major clinical features were generalized tooth wear and gingival enlargement, altered ch

Extension of the anaerobic digestion model No. 1 (ADM1) to include phenol compounds biodegradation processes for simulating the anaerobic co-digestion of olive mill wastes at mesophilic temperature.

The anaerobic digestion model No. 1 (ADM1) was extended and enhanced to describe the anaerobic degradation processes of phenol compounds and homologues in olive mill wastewater (OMW) and olive mill solid waste (OMSW) at mesophilic temperature (37 degrees C). The original ADM1 basic structure was extended by to the inclusion of phenolic compounds degradation processes into benzoate and then into acetate. The inhibitory effect of phenolic compounds on the fermenting process was accounted for by the use of non-competitive inhibition functions. New sensitive phenolic and benzoate parameters were c

Comparison of four selective media for the isolation of Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Currently there are no commercially available selective media indicated for the isolation of Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei. Ashdown's agar, a custom selective medium for isolation of B. pseudomallei, is well described in the literature but unavailable commercially. Three commercially available media, Burkholderia cepacia selective agar (BCSA), oxidative-fermentative-polymyxin B-bacitracin-lactose (OFPBL) agar, and Pseudomonas cepacia (PC) agar are recommended for isolation of B. cepacia from respiratory secretions of cystic fibrosis patients.
