There is growing interest in the relationship between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and diabetes mellitus (DM), and the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) may be an important link between these two diseases. The role of GLP-1R in DM is principally to regulate glycemic control by stimulating insulin secretion, inhibiting glucagon secretion, and improving insulin signaling, thereby reducing blood glucose levels. In AD, GLP-1R attenuates the pathological features of AD through mechanisms such as anti-inflammatory effects, the reduction in amyloid-beta (Aβ) deposition, the promotion of Aβ cleara

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for cognitive impairment, ranging from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia. The underlying mechanisms involve a complex interplay of hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, vascular dysfunction, and amyloid pathology. Effective management strategies remain an area of active investigation. This review explores the pathophysiological mechanisms linking T2D to cognitive dysfunction and evaluates current and emerging therapeutic strategies to preserve cognitive function in diabetic patients. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. While most cases are sporadic, there is growing evidence of a link between PD and metabolic dysfunctions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Proposed pathogenic mechanisms underlying this overlap include insulin resistance and chronic inflammation. Similar patterns of cellular damage are observed in both metabolic disorders and PD, including mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired autophagy, oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticu

The impact of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on growth remains uncertain, with previous studies reporting mixed findings. This study aimed to evaluate whether T1DM affects final adult height (FAH) by comparing it to genetically predicted mid-parental height (MPH).This retrospective cohort study analyzed medical records of 91 individuals diagnosed with T1DM at Ajou University Hospital, Korea, between 2000 and 2024. All individuals were diagnosed at least one year before completing linear growth and continued receiving care until reaching FAH. FAH was compared with MPH, and multiple regression

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus on continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) require a lower dose of insulin than those treated with multiple daily injections (MDIs). However, it is unclear whether this is also the case for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
AIM: To compare insulin dosage requirements between CSII and MDI in T2DM, identifying influencing factors associated with both therapeutic modalities.
METHODS: A total of 954 patients with T2DM were divided into two groups: CSII and MDI groups. The total daily insulin dose (TDD

Islet transplantation can improve glycemic control in a subset of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). This therapeutic approach is often limited by scarcity of adequate donor islets and an insufficient revascularization capacity of grafted islets. Recent findings reveal that sex is an important determinant for the outcome of islet transplantation. However, it is still unknown how the biological sex of islet donors and recipients affects the revascularization of the grafts during the initial ischemic post-transplantation phase. In this study, we observed in a mouse dorsal skinfold ch

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for dementia and cerebral small vessel disease, but there remains a need to identify targetable molecular pathways involved in the underlying pathophysiology.
METHODS: In participants with Alzheimer's disease, related dementias, or cerebrovascular diseases, we assessed associations between ratios of unesterified linoleic acid (LA)-derived soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) metabolites (diols) and substrates (epoxides), with imaging-derived white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), brain parenchymal fraction (BPF), and cognitive performan

INTRODUCTION: To study the relationship of late-life hemoglobin A1C (A1C) with postmortem neuropathology in older adults with and without diabetes mellitus (DM).
METHODS: A total of 990 participants from five cohort studies of aging and dementia with at least two annually-collected A1C measures, who had autopsy. Neuropathologic evaluations documented cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and other pathologies. To evaluate the association of A1C mean and variability (standard deviation [SD]) with neuropathology, we used a series of adjusted regression models.

The last two decades have proffered many remarkable choices in managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Leading the list are glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1RAs), the first of which, exenatide, was approved by the FDA in 2005. Two other major classes of drugs have also entered the market: dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, commonly known as gliptins and approved in 2006, and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, with the first approval occurring in 2013. These drugs have revolutionized the treatment of diabetes. Additionally, on the horizon, the once-w

Smoking increases complications and mortality in people with diabetes. Quitting delivers major benefits, but physiological (weight gain, insulin sensitivity shifts) and psychological barriers make cessation harder in this group. Our review article examined strategies tailored to people with diabetes. All smokers with diabetes should receive clear, personalized advice to quit, embedded in routine care. Among the available medications, varenicline has the strongest evidence in this population. Nicotine replacement therapy and bupropion may help but have limited diabetes-specific data, so they sh

Hyperglycemia in pregnancy (HIP) poses significant risks to maternal and fetal health yet remains underreported, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. This public health challenge includes gestational diabetes mellitus, pre-existing diabetes, and diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy, with regional prevalence rates as high as 28%. Left untreated, HIP can lead to adverse maternal outcomes such as preeclampsia and excessive gestational weight gain, as well as neonatal complications, including macrosomia and neonatal hypoglycemia. International and regional guidelines emphasize early detection a

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a significant complication of diabetes, leading to chronic kidney failure and end-stage renal disease. While traditional treatments exist, innovative strategies are being investigated to enhance DN management. This study examines a novel nanosized formulation of carvedilol (CVL), a drug recognized for its β-blocker and α-1-adrenoreceptor antagonist properties. We developed a self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDS) to assess its potential in improving DN outcomes. DN was induced in rats using streptozotocin (STZ), and the animals received oral administrati

BACKGROUND: Long COVID presents significant health challenges, especially for patients with type 2 diabetes. Emerging evidence suggests that sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors may provide protective effects against COVID-19 complications, but their role in reducing long COVID risk remains unclear.
METHODS: Utilizing the TriNetX platform, a retrospective cohort study was conducted among adults with type 2 diabetes diagnosed with COVID-19 between January 1, 2020, and June 30, 2024. Propensity score matching balanced demographic, clinical, and comorbidity profiles between SGLT2 in

Background/Objectives: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with altered maternal gut microbiota and increased risk of large-for-gestational age (LGA) births. The contribution of gut microbiota to fetal overgrowth in GDM, independent of glycemic control, remains unclear. Methods: In this pilot longitudinal study, the gut microbiota of 18 women with GDM was followed from the second (2T) to the third trimester (3T). Maternal fecal samples were analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and associations between microbial profiles and infant birth weight were examined. In addition, these a
