Reproductive Health of Active Duty Women in Medically Austere Environments.

One in seven of the approximately 2.2 million Department of Defense active duty military personnel are women. Among active duty servicewomen, about 40% are under 26 years old, and almost half are young, lower ranking enlisted personnel. This article will include a review of the literature on military women's health topics such including contraception access, pregnancy, and pregnancy outcomes after environmental exposures. In these early adult years, contraception use may not be consistent, leading to higher rates of unintended pregnancy that is similar to their civilian counterparts, but it ma

Exploration of Incarcerated Men's and Women's Attitudes of Smoking in the Presence of Children and Pregnant Women: Is There a Disparity Between Smoking Attitudes and Smoking Behavior?

INTRODUCTION: A major health challenge facing persons who are incarcerated is tobacco smoking. Upon reentry to the community, concerns regarding smoking cessation may be less likely to receive needed attention. Many individuals have partners who are pregnant and/or reside in households where children and pregnant women live. We explored incarcerated adults' attitudes of smoking in the presence of children and pregnant women and how post-release smoking behaviors are influenced by their attitudes. METHODS: Two hundred forty-seven incarcerated adults participated in a smoking cessation randomiz

A Patient Simulation Framework for Risk Assessment of Conversational Health Care AI: Development and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Conversational AI systems are increasingly being deployed in health care for clinical decision support, but their performance varies substantially across patient communication styles, health literacy levels, and behavioral patterns. Static benchmarks cannot capture multiturn dynamics through which this variation compounds, and no current evaluation framework implements structured AI risk management guidance for conversational health care AI. The result is a structural risk: AI systems may perform well in aggregate while failing disproportionately for the populations they are intend

Health Information-Seeking Patterns of the General Public and Indications for Disease Surveillance: Register-Based Study Using Lyme Disease.

BACKGROUND: People using the Internet to find information on health issues, such as specific diseases, usually start their search from a general search engine, for example, Google. Internet searches such as these may yield results and data of questionable quality and reliability. Health Library is a free-of-charge medical portal on the Internet providing medical information for the general public. Physician's Databases, an Internet evidence-based medicine source, provides medical information for health care professionals (HCPs) to support their clinical practice. Both databases are available t

Feminine hygiene products and black women's reproductive health: a review of health inequities, racialized marketing, and practice implications.

Feminine hygiene products (FHPs), including douches, washes, and deodorants, are widely marketed as tools for maintaining vaginal cleanliness and freshness despite evidence linking some products to adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Black women have historically been disproportionately targeted by FHP marketing and use certain products at higher rates, raising concerns about the intersection of vaginal hygiene practices, health inequities, and structural stigma. This review synthesizes historical, public health, clinical, and sociocultural scholarship on FHPs and Black women's re

Oral Health in Low-Income Older Adults in Korea.

Oral diseases among older adults are prevalent and a major public health problem, but public attention regarding this matter is quite limited. Many older adults experience limited access to oral care services. The study aimed to describe characteristics of oral health conditions, perceived oral health status, and oral health practices and to examine factors related to living status and accessibility to dental health care among 9,660 low-income older adults living in a suburban city in Korea. Approximately 42% of low-income older adults lived alone; 68% perceived their oral health as either exc

The Development and Testing of the Hippocratic Heart Failure Self-Care Scale.

BACKGROUND: The adoption of self-care behaviors among patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) is essential for the management of their health condition. However, there is a lack of tools for estimating self-care in CHF patients. We aim to develop and validate the Greek version of the Hippocratic heart failure self-care scale (HHFSCS). METHODS: The scale includes 22 items which are reviewed by a committee of experts. Individuals indicate the frequency at which they follow each self-behavior on a five-point Likert scale. Adult patients with CHF (n = 250) from a General Hospital in Athens p

Does the quality of the relationship to parents and peers predict mental health service use during adolescence? A prospective community study.

Adolescents frequently seek emotional support from parents and peers when experiencing psychological distress. The quality of these relationships may therefore influence their help-seeking behavior and access to professional care, but it is yet unknown whether the quality of the relationship to parents and peers prospectively predict adolescent mental health service use. Guided by the Behavioral Model of Health Service Use, the present study examined whether perceived relationship quality-specifically closeness and conflict with mother, father, and best friend-prospectively predicted use of sp

Serious Games for HIV Prevention Among Adolescents in a Global Context: A Scoping Review.

Adolescents constitute a vulnerable group in the context of HIV because of early sexual debut and engagement in risk behaviors. Traditional health education methods face significant challenges regarding their effectiveness in altering risk perception and promoting sustainable behavioral changes among youth. In this scenario, serious games (SG)-educational technologies that integrate game mechanics for pedagogical and therapeutic purposes, moving beyond pure entertainment-emerge as an approach for HIV prevention. Our study sought to answer the following: What are the types and themes of SGs pro

Position statement: The Society of Behavioral Medicine supports federal action to break the cycle of gun violence.

The United States continues to see significant issues with gun violence, resulting in significant public health concerns. Behavioral medicine is often involved in addressing the psychological aftermath of gun violence, as survivors experience higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicidal ideation. Black and Latino communities are disproportionately affected by gun violence due to structural inequities, with gun violence furthering the structural and health inequities experienced in these communities. While the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 helped to improv

Use of herbal medicine related to anxiety and depression in the general population of southeast Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased anxiety/depression and changes in people's health behaviors. This study aimed to investigate health beliefs regarding using herbal medicine and its associated factors among Iranians. A cross-sectional study on the general population in Birjand (southeast Iran) was conducted using a survey questionnaire (an online platform for creating questionnaires, available at https://porsline.ir/) consisting of demographic characteristics and beliefs toward herbal medicine use, as well as a telehealth and hospital anxiety and depression scale questionnaire to addr

Childhood Emotional Neglect and Cardiovascular Disease: A Narrative Review.

Psychosocial factors predict the incidence and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). There is accumulating evidence for the importance of childhood maltreatment for the development and progression of both CVD-related risk factors and CVD. However, past research has predominantly focused on active forms of childhood maltreatment such as emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. At the same time, childhood neglect as a relatively silent form of childhood maltreatment received less attention. Childhood emotional neglect is the most common form of neglect. This narrative review sum

Video-gaming among high school students: health correlates, gender differences, and problematic gaming.

OBJECTIVE: Video game playing may negatively impact youth. However, the existing literature on gaming is inconsistent and often has focused on aggression rather than the health correlates of gaming and the prevalence and correlates of problematic gaming. METHODS: We anonymously surveyed 4028 adolescents about gaming and reported problems with gaming and other health behaviors. A total of 51.2% of the sample reported gaming (76.3% of boys and 29.2% of girls). RESULTS: There were no negative health correlates of gaming in boys and lower odds of smoking regularly; however, girls who reported ga
