Relationship of imprecise corollary discharge in schizophrenia to auditory hallucinations.

CONTEXT: A forward model of intended thoughts and actions prepares sensory cortex for sensations that are a consequence of those actions. Imprecision of the corollary discharge in schizophrenia may contribute to the misperception of inner experiences and thoughts as "voices" or auditory hallucinations. OBJECTIVES: To assess the precision of the forward model in schizophrenia using the N100 component of the auditory event-related potential to speech that is altered or unaltered, in real time, as it is being spoken. To assess the relationship between auditory hallucinations and the imprecision

Do Standard Instrumental Acoustic, Perceptual, and Subjective Voice Outcomes Indicate Therapy Success in Patients With Functional Dysphonia?

OBJECTIVES: The validity and sensitivity to change of instrumental acoustic measurements in patients with functional dysphonia have been controversially discussed. This work examines combined voice therapy effects on standard acoustic measurements, and if these agree with perceptual and subjective voice outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients (26 women, 13 men) aged 20-70 years (mean: 46.3, standard deviation 12.8) with functional dysphonia were investigated before and after combined voice therapy. Instrumental parameters included mean and range of speaking

Characteristics of speech production in patients with T1 glottic cancer who underwent laser cordectomy or radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Laser cordectomy (LC) or radiotherapy (RT) is often recommended in the early stage of laryngeal cancer. We conducted perceptual and acoustic analysis to compare sustained vowel and stop consonants since there is no article evaluating both the sustained vowel and stop consonants. Eventually, we might determine which management is superior in terms of speech production. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 28 patients who underwent LC and RT for early T1 glottic cancer were selected. The sustained vowel /a/ and bilabial stop consonants were used to assess the perceptual scores. The fundame

Hypoxia-related brain dysfunction in forensic medicine.

Blood gases levels imbalances belong to important factors triggering central nervous system (CNS) functional disturbances. Hypoxia can be illness-related, like in many COPD patients, or it may be caused by broad range of external or iatrogenic factors - including influence of drugs depressing respiration, failure to keep the patient's prosthesis-supported airways patent, or a mistake in the operation of medical equipment supporting patient's respiration. Hypoxia, especially when it is not accompanied by rapid carbon dioxide retention, can go unnoticed for prolonged times, deepening existing CN

Action simulation plays a critical role in deceptive action recognition.

The ability to infer deceptive intents from nonverbal behavior is critical for social interactions. By combining single-pulse and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in healthy humans, we provide both correlational and causative evidence that action simulation is actively involved in the ability to recognize deceptive body movements. We recorded motor-evoked potentials during a faked-action discrimination (FAD) task: participants watched videos of actors lifting a cube and judged whether the actors were trying to deceive them concerning the real weight of the cube. Seeing faked

Scapegoating and the unpopular nurse.

This paper considers the theories of scapegoating and their application to nursing. It reviews the literature on scapegoating drawing particular attention to those studies which have emphasised on the instrumental uses of scapegoating in organisational contexts. The paper draws on data from a qualitative study of the identification and management of the 'problem' nurse conducted in three healthcare Trusts. It describes a number of illustrative cases in which different types of scapegoating occurred. The paper argues that scapegoating is an ethical challenge which nurses must face.

Comparison of different diagnostic criteria for vascular dementia (ADDTC, DSM-IV, ICD-10, NINDS-AIREN).

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vascular dementia (VD) has been an ill-defined term thus far. Recently detailed criteria for the diagnosis of VD have been proposed (Alzheimer's Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Centers [ADDTC], 1992; Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition [DSM-IV], 1994; International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision [ICD-10], 1992, 1993; and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke-Association Internationale pour la Recherche et l'Enseignement en Neurosciences [NINDS-AIREN], 1993). Evaluation of Vision-Language Models for Surgical Narration and Critical View of Safety Assessment in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Vision-language models (VLMs) may support surgical documentation through operative video narration, but fluent narration may not capture procedural details or safety-critical anatomy. We compared VLM-generated laparoscopic cholecystectomy narrations with surgeon narration and evaluated Critical View of Safety (CVoS) assessment. STUDY DESIGN: Forty-eight 10-minute segments from 13 Cholec80 videos were evaluated using Gemini 2.5 Flash (Untrained VLM) and Qwen3-VL-CoA (Surgically Trained VLM) under Basic and procedure-specific prompting. VLM and surgeon narrations were compared for s

"At least i am doing something": a health belief model-guided qualitative study of nutritional supplement use among cancer patients during treatment.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional supplement use is widespread among people receiving cancer treatment, yet the motivations, belief structures, and lived experiences that shape these decisions are incompletely understood. This study applied the Health Belief Model (HBM) as a guiding theoretical framework to explore how and why adult cancer patients decide to use nutritional supplements during treatment. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Twenty-five adults with pathologically confirmed malignant diagnoses participated in semi-structured interviews framed around the six core constructs

"I Can't Fully Explain It, but Something Just Feels Off": A Qualitative Study of Danish Students' Bystander Perceptions of Sexual Violence Risk.

This study explores how Danish upper secondary students, when positioned as bystanders, evaluate risk in situations involving or potentially escalating into sexual harassment or violence. Drawing on psychological risk perception literature, we focus on the cognitive, emotional, and contextual factors that shape young bystanders' recognition and interpretations of risk. Three semi-structured and mixed-gender focus group interviews (N = 15) were conducted with students in their first to third years of high school. A participatory card-based activity was used to elicit discussion of various scena

Validation of remote multimodal AI screening for Parkinson disease across diverse settings.

BACKGROUND: Timely detection of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains limited by reliance on in-person neurological evaluations that are often costly and geographically inaccessible. To address these barriers, we develop PARK (Parkinson's Analysis with Remote Kinetic-tasks) - a web-based artificial intelligence (AI) tool that screens for PD using short webcam recordings of facial expression, motor, and speech tasks. METHODS: Across eight independent studies (n = 1,865 participants; 670 with PD), participants completed three standardized tasks (smile mimicry, finger tapping, and pangram utterance)

Stroboscopic visual training in sport: a structured narrative review of effects, applications, and potential neurophysiological mechanisms.

Stroboscopic Visual Training (SVT) is an emerging intervention that periodically occludes visual input and creates a temporally constrained visual environment during perceptual or sport-specific tasks. This structured narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the effects of SVT on perceptual-cognitive function and sport performance and discusses its potential neurophysiological mechanisms. The available evidence suggests that, under restricted visual-input conditions, SVT may facilitate more efficient use of task-relevant visual information and may support anticipatory decision-making,

Regret, uncertainty, and bounded rationality in norm-driven decisions.

This study introduces an agent-based model to examine how regret, uncertainty, and social norms interact to shape vaccination behavior during epidemics. The model integrates three behavioral mechanisms-anticipated regret, evolving norms, and uncertainty-dependent trust-within a unified learning framework. Grounded in psychology and behavioral economics, it captures how individuals make probabilistic choices influenced by material payoffs, fear, trust, and social approval. Simulations of the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered process show that choice precision has context-dependent effects. In the

Medical education from a succession perspective: what can the apprenticeship model bring to competency-based education?

This Scholarly Perspective frames workplace-based training in medical education as a succession concept and explores how the benefits of the traditional apprenticeship model can integrate with modern competency-based medical education. In 2024, the author broadened the construct of medical competence into 3 semi-hierarchical layers: canonical, contextual, and personalized. Canonical competence (the canon that all professionals should know) relates to knowledge and skills that meet generalized, context-independent standards, assessed with methods of high psychometric quality. Personalized compe
