Machine learning-based integration identifies the ferroptosis hub genes in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

BACKGROUND: Ferroptosis, is characterized by lipid peroxidation of fatty acids in the presence of iron ions, which leads to cell apoptosis. This leads to the disruption of metabolic pathways, ultimately resulting in liver dysfunction. Although ferroptosis is linked to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), understanding the key ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) involved in NASH remains incomplete. NASH may be targeted therapeutically by identifying the genes responsible for ferroptosis. METHODS: To identify ferroptosis-related genes and develop a ferroptosis-related signature (FeRS), 113 machine

Two-stage adversarial learning based unsupervised domain adaptation for retinal OCT segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning based optical coherence tomography (OCT) segmentation methods have achieved excellent results, allowing quantitative analysis of large-scale data. However, OCT images are often acquired by different devices or under different imaging protocols, which leads to serious domain shift problem. This in turn results in performance degradation of segmentation models. PURPOSE: Aiming at the domain shift problem, we propose a two-stage adversarial learning based network (TSANet) that accomplishes unsupervised cross-domain OCT segmentation. METHODS: In the first stage, a Fouri

Neural interactions in the human frontal cortex dissociate reward and punishment learning.

How human prefrontal and insular regions interact while maximizing rewards and minimizing punishments is unknown. Capitalizing on human intracranial recordings, we demonstrate that the functional specificity toward reward or punishment learning is better disentangled by interactions compared to local representations. Prefrontal and insular cortices display non-selective neural populations to rewards and punishments. Non-selective responses, however, give rise to context-specific interareal interactions. We identify a reward subsystem with redundant interactions between the orbitofrontal and ve

MCAS-GP: Deep Learning-Empowered Middle Cerebral Artery Segmentation and Gate Proposition.

With the fast development of AI technologies, deep learning is widely applied for biomedical data analytics and digital healthcare. However, there remain gaps between AI-aided diagnosis and real-world healthcare demands. For example, hemodynamic parameters of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) have significant clinical value for diagnosing adverse perinatal results. Nevertheless, the current measurement procedure is tedious for sonographers. To reduce the workload of sonographers, we propose MCAS-GP, a deep learning-empowered framework that tackles the Middle Cerebral Artery Segmentation and Gat

Machine Learning Approaches for Blood Pressure Classification from Photoplethysmogram: A Comparative Analysis.

The cuffless estimation of blood pressure (BP) has become a prominent area of research in recent years fueled by its potential clinical implications and the growing interest from the wearable device industry. It has been accelerated by the emergence of learning-based models. Most use multiple pulse signals such as ECG, PPG, etc. rely on pulse transit time estimates and related features for estimating BP. However, the accuracy and reliability of such methods are questionable and hence there has been limited clinical uptake. This study focuses on evaluating the accuracy obtained from different m

Material characterization of human middle ear using machine-learning-based surrogate models.

This study aims to introduce a novel non-invasive method for rapid material characterization of middle-ear structures, taking into consideration the invaluable insights provided by the mechanical properties of ear tissues. Valuable insights into various ear pathologies can be gleaned from the mechanical properties of ear tissues, yet conventional techniques for assessing these properties often entail invasive procedures that preclude their use on living patients. In this study, in the first step, we developed machine-learning models of the middle ear to predict its responses with a significant

CAD System Design for Pituitary Tumor Classification based on Transfer Learning Technique.

BACKGROUND: A brain tumor is an asymmetrical expansion by cells inevitably emulating amid them. Image processing is a vibrant research area where the handing out of the image in the medical field is an exceedingly tricky field. In this paper, an expert algorithm is suggested for the detection of pituitary brain tumors from MR images. METHODS: The preprocessing techniques (smoothing, edge detection, filtering) and segmentation techniques (watershed) are applied to the online data set. The transfer learning technique is used as a classifier whose performance is measured in terms of classificati

Thyroid syndrome, a complex endocrine disorder, involves the dysregulation of the thyroid gland, impacting vital physiological functions. Common causes include autoimmune disorders, iodine deficiency, and genetic predispositions. The effects of thyroid syndrome extend beyond the thyroid itself, affecting metabolism, energy levels, and overall well-being. Thyroid syndrome is associated with severe cases of thyroid dysfunction, highlighting the potentially life-threatening consequences of untreated or inadequately managed thyroid disorders. This research aims to propose an advanced meta-learning

Machine learning prediction of future amyloid beta positivity in amyloid-negative individuals.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves β -amyloid (A β ) accumulation. Early identification of individuals with abnormal β -amyloid levels is crucial, but A β quantification with positron emission tomography (PET) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is invasive and expensive. METHODS: We propose a machine learning framework using standard non-invasive (MRI, demographics, APOE, neuropsychology) measures to predict future A β -positivity in A β -negative individuals. We separately study A β -positivity defined by PET and CSF. RESULTS: Cross-validated AUC for 4-year A β
