Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited disease characterized by acute or subacute painless central visual loss usually in young adults, predominantly in males. Except for optic atrophy, LHON patients are usually otherwise healthy. Occasionally, LHON is associated with neurological, cardiac, and skeletal changes. The clinical course of LHON has several stages. Peripapillary microangiopathy is present from the beginning. Microangiopathy disappears as the disease progresses towards the end stages. Simultaneously, the retinal nerve fiber layer fades from view, first pap

Previous studies on the pathophysiology of white matter anoxic injury have revealed that the Na(+)-Ca2+ exchanger is an important mediator of Ca2+ overload. To date, however, the localization of this key Ca2+ transporter in myelinated axons has not been demonstrated. The present study uses immunofluorescence labeling with a monoclonal antibody (R3F1) to the canine cardiac type I Na(+)-Ca2+ exchanger to localize exchanger protein to rat peripheral and central myelinated axons. The indirect immunofluorescence labeling technique was used to study paraformaldehyde fixed frozen cryostat sections of

Sensory neurons of the olfactory, trigeminal, facial, vestibulo-cochlear, glossopharyngeal and vagal nerves, and neurons migrating along the olfactory nerve to the brain have special anlagen, made up of placodes located in the epithelial layer. To investigate the characteristic phenotype of placode-derived neurons, immunohistochemical analysis of intermediate filaments was conducted on formalin-fixed human embryonic tissues. Neurons arising from placodes including luteinizing-hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) neurons migrating from the olfactory placode to the brain had immunoreactivity to anti

The present study on unilaterally incompletely placodectomized chick embryos revealed that arrival of migrating LHRH neurons into the forebrain area is dependent on the presence of a central projection of the olfactory nerve. When a fragment of the lateral and medial olfactory epithelium was spared the damage, a small number of LHRH-ir cells were found to migrate into the forebrain along a thin NCAM-H-expressing fiber bundle of the olfactory nerve. In embryos with large lesions which destroyed the lateral olfactory epithelium, the poorly developed NCAM-H-positive olfactory nerve fibers were ar

Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) or amylin is a hormone candidate predominantly expressed in insulin cells. A role for IAPP in the regulation of glucose homeostasis and the development of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus has been proposed. IAPP is structurally related to the sensory neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide. In the present study, using in situ hybridization, immunocytochemistry, and immunochemistry, the expression of IAPP in sensory neurons in the rat was investigated. IAPP was expressed in a population of small- to medium-sized nerve cell bodies in dorsal root gangl

BACKGROUND: In the central nervous system (CNS), three types of myelin-associated inhibitors (MAIs) exert major inhibitory effects on nerve regeneration: Nogo-A, myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG), and oligodendrocyte-myelin glycoprotein (OMgp). MAIs have two co-receptors, Nogo receptor (NgR) and paired immunoglobulin-like receptor B (PirB). Existing studies confirm that inhibiting NgR only exerted a modest disinhibitory effect in CNS. However, the inhibitory effects of PirB on nerve regeneration after binding to MAIs are controversial too. We aimed to further investigate the effect of PirB

INTRODUCTION: Male genital dysfunction was recognized as a complication following anterior approach lumbar surgery. Disruption of efferent sympathetic pathways such as the abdominal aortic plexus (AAP) and superior hypogastric plexus (SHP) which lied pre-abdominal aorta and iliac artery had been thought as the main reason. Though there were some clinical reports of retrograde ejaculation, the applied anatomic study of the autonomic nerve anterior to the lumbar was little. The purpose was to find out a lumbar surgery approach which was ejaculation preservation through the detailed study of the

Previous studies in rats have shown that spinal morphine loses potency and efficacy to suppress an acute nociceptive stimulus applied to the tail or the paw following injury to peripheral nerves by tight ligation of the L5/L6 spinal nerves. Additionally, intrathecal (i.th.) morphine is ineffective in suppressing tactile allodynia at fully antinociceptive doses in these animals. The molecular basis for this loss of morphine potency and efficacy in nerve injury states is not known. One possible explanation for this phenomenon is a generalized, multi-segmental loss of opioid mu (mu) receptors in

OBJECTIVE: To determine the histological structure and autonomic innervation of the vesico-ureteric junction (VUJ) in cases of primary ureteric reflux, to compare the results with those reported previously for non-refluxing VUJs and thus determine possible structural anomalies which could be responsible for vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen specimens of VUJs with reflux were obtained from four males and 10 females undergoing ureteric reimplantation. Serial frozen sections were cut and stained either with Masson's trichrome or immunostained for protein gene product

BACKGROUND/AIM: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant hereditary tumor predisposition syndrome. In approximately 30% of cases, plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs) are identified, which are precursor lesions for malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). MPNST is a major cause of the reduced life expectancy of NF1 patients.
CASE REPORT: The patient, a two-year-old at the time of surgical treatment, had been diagnosed with an orbital nerve sheath tumor causing lid swelling and ptosis since birth. The tumor showed disproportionately rapid growth, leading to increasing functi

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is an inflammatory neuropathy, characterized by a slowly progressive onset and symmetrical, sensorimotor involvement. Several diseases, nevertheless, may present similar features as CIDP. It is of paramount importance to recognize these mimics to yield an optimal therapeutic effect. Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorder known for its diverse clinical manifestations. Since it may present as sporadic as well as inherited manner and may only involve the peripheral nerve syst

PURPOSE: Previous studies proved the benefits of electroacupuncture (EA) on heart in ischemia reperfusion injury and chronic heart failure. However, the role of EA on sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction has rarely been elucidated before. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of EA on cardiac dysfunction in a rat model of sepsis and to speculate the underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: Sepsis was induced by cecum ligation and puncture in anesthetized rats. EA at the acupoint "Neiguan (PC6)" was applied 0.5 h after the induction of sepsis for 20 min. Heart rate variability was obtained i

Porcine pseudorabies virus (PRV) infection is a major disease in swine. It is challenging to eradicate the virus entirely after it has invaded Chinese farms, resulting in significant economic losses. This study aimed to explore the histopathological correlation of brain regions in PRV-infected pigs. Twenty pigs were randomly divided into two experimental groups (the PRV-infected and sham-inoculated groups; n = 10 per group). The pigs were then observed for clinical signs at specified time points. Brain tissue samples were collected for histopathological examination on days 3, 10, and 14. The c

INTRODUCTION: Past research has demonstrated that the urethral tonus is mainly under sympathetic control. Since 5 years, a beta 3-adrenoceptor (ADRB3) agonist is available in the treatment of overactive bladder syndrome. The presence of ADRB3 within the human urethra has not been demonstrated to date. Presence of ADRB3 in the urethra could influence urethral tonus. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of ADRB3 in the human female urethra.

BACKGROUND: Proximally based, pedicled flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) muscle flap has been described previously for soft tissue coverage of the proximal forearm and elbow. No studies have been done on the distal muscular perforators and its use as a distally based flap.
METHODS: Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric dissections were done. Specimens were injected with latex to facilitate identification of the perforators. Distal muscular perforators were dissected and distances of the pedicles from the distal wrist crease and ulnar styloid were measured and recorded. A clinical case is also presented where a
